Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Ok, I am lost again. Trying to decide on the steering purchase for the dana60 swap. I have researched and researched this to no end. Looking at Ballistics stuff, ORD Design, WFO Concepts, all really nice. I want to go with a crossover setup, and the high steer arms to eliminate the kingpin springs. I dont think I need to go full hydro, or even hydro assist for my application. Leaning toward Ballistics D60 high steer kit which has the 2 high steer arms, 8 studs, nuts, etc. Then the crossover steering kit which has the 4 7/8"-18 chevy tie rod ends (x1 es2234L., X1 es2027L., X2 es2234R) plus 4 tube adapters for the rod ends, 2 1.5" OD .250 wall tubes for the tie rod and drag link 58" long. All adds up to 2 kits so far at considerable cost. If I understand correctly, I also need to purchase a 2wd steering box to run this setup. I have already bought the correct pitman arm for this, ( I believe). Does it sound like I'm on the right track here? As far as the 3 companys listed above, Ballistic seems to have the most complete kits for this application, but maybe I've missed something here. Any of you guy's done this swap lately, or have any advice for this rookie? Looking at one of the higher priced upgrades to my stage 4 project, and want to do it right!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Ya'll sit. I've been searching, ORD and Brothers both show 2wd boxes good to go. Brothers also has the quick ratio boxes, any comments?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Nobody else going 1 ton setups? Going to invest cash here soon, and looking for some advice! Anybody got some new help?
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Ok, so far here's my plan. Going with Ballistic's dana60 high steer kit, thier crossover tie rod kit, and the quick ratio power 2wd steering box from Brothers. Already have the 2wd pitman arm reamed out for this type of app from WFO. Looking at just over $800.00 or so, but I think this is the way to go here. Anybody?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
I highly recommend it.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Thank you, just seems like the way to go here. Need funds, funds, funds!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Hung up and primered black 6 parts I got from WES. Gonna go total rust free coating after welding in, but just needed to protect parts until welding/installation is completeted!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
So, I guess i missed it, are you buying 2wd steering unit with port options for assist?
I have also been doing research for a while on 1 ton steering upgrade and agree on ballistic for their arms. i was planning on just porting my own 2wd box. check out east coast gear , they might be cheaper for your steering links and tre's needed. i think i paid 200. edit: found you running 39's, I'm running 38.5 on stock steering atm. |
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Looked at rebuilt 2wd ported boxes in case I want to upgrade to assist later on. You can run them with the ports capped off until you add the pump system and assist cylinder later on. From what I've found so far, ported ones are upwards of $400.00 I really dont think I'm going to need the assist setup, so am going to go with the Brothers rebuilt 2wd power quick ratio box for like $250.00 The factory 4wd box shaft will not allow you to use a pitman arm necessary for side to side motion of the steering. Hence the need for a 2wd box. Not really sure I need the quick ratio one, but It seems like it would be a good upgrade.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got a couple more heater parts from WES the last couple of days. It has been a good summer for me gathering needed parts! Lots of cash went by-by, but getting closer all the time!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got a pair of NOS rocker sill plates today, and they are nice! Also got my new heater/defroster hoses from WES today! Setting this resto up the way I want it, one piece at a time!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Say what they will about Repo and NOS, NOS is worth the extra money. Can't allway's get it, but it is better than repo if you can find it.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got a set of tailgate side seal strips from Sharpie in great condition. Are there different ones for specific years? The ones I took off my K5 are longer and narrower than the ones I just bought. Also the groove for the rubber seal strip is smaller on my stock ones. Maybe a difference from K5's to pickups? Anybody seen this before?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Long road ahead, but I feel pretty good about parts pile. Got some high dollar steering parts to go yet, but feel good about the winters income. At least I have a plan for what I need soon, and I will make it happen. Anyone on the tailgate strips?

Ok, just can't figure out why the ones I bought are so different from the ones I took off?

Here's a pic of the tailgate strips and the difference between the two sets. Blue ones came off my K5, yellow ones are the ones I just bought. Different. Including some more pic's just because it's been a while. Anybody?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Let's go guy's! Get off the couch and rip it up!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
The yellow ones look like an original set, maybe the blue ones came from 73 & up blazer?
Do the holes match up to your tub? |
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Yea, the blue ones have been on my K5 since I bought it in 1981. Don't seem to be any extra holes for mounting. Many layers of different color paint matches most of the rest of my tub.Anybody know where you can get the rubber seal strips for this area?

C'mon, Santa Clause!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Looks like more overtime coming up for next few months at work! That's a good thing for my project. K5 is back in storage for the winter, so more parts aquisition is in order! Only one thing in the way first, New set of rubber for my daily driver for the winter- alway's something! Luckily only P235/75R15's on my 01 S10 4door! Price not so bad! Way cheaper than the new ones coming for the K5!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Anybody know who sells the rubber weatherstrips for the tailgate trim? Looked at LMC and the like, but nothing so far.

Hey VA,just searched Classic's site and can't find those seals? Any help?
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Just bought a seal kit for this area off e-bay. Aftermarket seals, I'll let you know what's up when I get em.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Thank's VA. I will know more when I get the ones I ordered. I think you are correct, but am waiting on delivery. Is there a bottom retainer strip for this area? Never even thought of that yet, but how else would it work? My K5 has no strip on the bed or tailgate area?

Ok, anybody got a pic of this bottom strip? Got a top tailgate strip I might be willing to trade for a decent bottom strip? Pic's anybody?

I actually have another one if you can't find one locally.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
A question for ya, it's not just a carpet holddown strip is it? No carpet in my K5 now or ever in the future. If you have a extra one, I would be interested in looking at it, chrome finish not a problem, gonna bedline finish everything on the interior anyway. LMK
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
It looks to me that the carpet strip/holdown is the same piece that holds the rubber strip down. I need to find one in decent shape, but first I want to confirm that the carpet holdown works for the rubber seal also. Like I said before no carpet now or never again. My K5 did have the leveling rubber mats, and the rubber floormats, but dont remember any holddown strips. The PO probably had already removed them. If the original carpet holddown strips hold the rubber seal in I could use one in good shape. It doesen't have to be good chrome condition, but no rot or dents. I am going to bedline the interior floorboard area black anyway. I do have a real nice tailgate topstrip to trade or? Also, I got a pair of door lock latches today, off our board here, really nice. My doors are pretty rough but so far I am planning on rebuilding them. Whew, long post, HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all you and your families!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
The carpet hold down is a bent piece and it has a groove to accept the weathersrip. It actually slides into the groove of the carpet hold down...so yes, that is what you need with or without carpet to install that weatherstrip.
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Ok, I get it now. Earlier post you said you had a extra one, aftermarket or OEM? I need one but like I said, gonna cover any chrome, so dont want to spend a bunch on finish. Thank's for the help!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Anybody got any pic's of the "carpet" strip holding down just the rubber seal?
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
More comments on the bedliner idea for the interior? There will be almost no chrome or shiny parts on this K5 when I'm done here.
