Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Update: Finished the airbox mount and painted it. This truck has not had backup lights since we put the van column in, 15 years ago. So after a bit of tutelage from Eric, I pulled the column and put a new pair of holes in, so we should have a neutral safety switch. Yes, there's one in the PRNDL, but Eric said I have to have some kind of relays and have to find some kinda wire and OY, that sounds complicated. I just fixed it from the truck end. Hopefully gonna start makin' some tracks you can see!

Sounds like you're getting it licked. Can't wait to see the reveal. :metal:

Ha, me too!

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Update! Got the column repainted, and the battery box and hood latch repainted last night, and got the fitting to hook up the oil pressure gauge. Tried to get the oil pressure sensor out, but couldn't get a socket on it and I was tired. Oh, called CAA and got all the missing parts on the way. I promise, I'll try to take more pics.

I know.... Boppa's coming out tonight, hopefully I'll pick up a camera. Bad Elco!

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Off night, didn't pick up a camera. Got a bunch of small misc. spray bombed, got the oil sending unit pulled, drilled, tapped, and reinstalled, and got the column loosely reinstalled. We shove it right up to the cluster, so we have to wait till it's back in to lock the column down. I think I'm gonna wade into tranny lines tonight. Pray for me.

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Thanks for the link Brian! Those are some good 'lil fittings. I have 4 sets of trans lines as of last night, and I took a minute and found the 5.3/4l60 set. They are too long, but they snake me up to the front of the motor very nicely, in all the factory clips I had to go back and find. Also figured out a trans cooler solution, I hope. Just gotta go get a better flare tool tonight and some tubing stock. Hopefully this is the last thing motor wise that's gotta be fabbed and briggled with. Assembly and a bit o'wiring from here on in, then time for the A/C mess. No pics, you all know what a fat moron lying on the floor going "Now what the hell am I gonna do?" looks like. Hoping for a good night and big win this weekend.

Lol! Watch it, I'll have you over here fabbin' lines!
|
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
I went a little different direction with the trans cooler. I bought a Derale cooler with a fan, and mounted it outboard of the frame. The lines that came from the trans were used at the trans, and the kit came with compression fittings and enough hose to go over the top of the frame.

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
I have 2 different factory coolers and the associated bracketry to give it a whack. Also have a mess of the snap in fittings and lines. Hopefully, some bendy bendy and some comp fittings and we can start on the upswing on this dealio. We'll see what some Chipotle and Bud Light inspiration brings this evening.

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Excellent progress. Thanks for sharing the pics.
I guess your radiator port is smaller than mine on the lower hose. I am going to have to make an adapter for mine to work right. I had to heat mine up with a heat gun just to test drive mine. Mine didn't fit worth a crap. |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Thanks guys, I'm tryin. Still gotta get a fuse holder and make a panel to hold all the electrical. Should be able to reassemble and install the PS stuff tonight. Starter should be in as well, then the plugs and exh manifolds. Radiator will take some soap, but it oughta work ok. The upper hose will use an adapter made from the same fence rail as the fuel filler adapter. Down to slappin' 'er together. I'll probably have to have Eric come over for the fire-up and make sure I didn't miss anything. Still have no idea what the hell to do about the exhaust. Big Black is off to the audio shop this week, kinda stoked about that.
Like I told Stacy, this is the point where most projects stall, 'cuz you're workin' your butt off and it looks like nothin's gettin' done. This project will not stall. I did it once, I can do it again. |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Ordered all the stuff to make up the exhaust this morning. Flyin' Ryan is parting a '97 Ford and said I could come steal all the relays, circuit breakers, and whatnot I want off it, headed there after work.
Forgot to mention, I got to wondering. Big Black has been a pretty good guide, but there are some significant differences. Guy up the street has an '04 CC, so I went up the street. "Can I look under the hood of your truck?" They graciously allowed me to and told me to come back if I needed to. Always good to have good neighbors. |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Oh, anyone got the hot tip for hooking up the prndl indicator? Big square thing, it's the right one, but it won't go down and seat. What am I missing?

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Thanks to all!
Day, thanks, I'll take a look tonight. I was lying under there, all lined up, just stabbin' away, nuthin. I received it disassembled, so I had no frame of reference. All the rest was snap snap snap, no problem. In other news, got a big blade fuse holder from Flyin' Ryan, and the bracket and wires for it should dovetail nicely with my evil plan. Hope to get the bracket fab done tonight, and maybe start wiring. Got the alt/PS tower installed and hooked up and the idler pulley installed and the starter in and Trans lines clearanced (again). Went to Radio Shack and found a 12 pin connector set that should work good for the cluster harness. Gonna get silly hot 'round here the next few days, might retreat inside and build the cluster, with Mike's good shots seen here- http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...354738&page=93 It's good when even Momma comes out and says, "Man, the bed is emptying out!" |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Some nice progress there. Fire up getting closer and closer!

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Looks great! Can't wait to see all them freaky-scary wiring shots that go with these swaps
|
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Thanks guys! Actually, the wiring doesn't seem too scary at all (if I could rememeber how to wire a relay, and where the hell I left the e-fan harness, and where the hell did the fuse holder go....). Just some batt+ and ign+ and the kicker for the starter, then to both fan relays and the fuel pump. Not too bad.
Got some new dipsticks last night (don't ask) and the o-rings for the steam line. Got the steam line installed, got the power strip installed, the fuse holder and the relay rack modded, and a bunch of head scratching done. Hopefully makin' tracks. |
