Re: New project

Went solid roller . With the Vortec block you can use a LT1 /vortec style blank and use the retainer plate to hold the cam thrust instead of a button . Comp built me a custom grind 256/266 @.050 .701/.707 with 1.6's on 108 . Heads are AFR 220 with the comp port job and the are 328 at .600 and 329 at .650 and .329 at .700 so really no need to use 1.6's . Pump gas 10.75 to 1 small block . Having Dan Divinci build me a carb for this motor .

We are just going to dyno the motor then bolt it in the truck and see what happens . Should be interesting . The goal is to be making passes by mid January . First race of the season NHRA is Febuary 17/18

Re: New project

One argument for the 1.6's is the if it goes all the way to .7,, that means the more time it will be at .6 and in the big flow.:) The cnc port is nice. My AFR RR220's went to 295 and hung there. Just wouldn't peek over the 300cfm line at all. But they were about 5-7 cfm over advertised,, Like always AFR is well worth the $

Who's shaft rocker system you using? AFR claims the 220's will 'accept' stock stud rockers and that's true. But if you really want the valve train right,, it requires a .45 / .1 offset. I run Crowers 1.55 shaft system on the 220's in the truck and the valve train is rock solid stable. I was surprised the stainless steel rockers wern't heavier and more of a problem with RPM's but it will go 8000 without missing a beat.

The springs are set up to go 1.6 and the machinist has told me thats were he wants it . I will be running his logo on the rear fenders next year also. He has told me bring my 1.5 stuff in and he would sale it for me . Crower is good stuff . I want shaft mounted stuff for sure . Trying to keep this a somewhat tame "bracket" motor . At this point im really nervous about all the changes . Really dont want to start from scratch next year , but going to have to to some extent .

Re: New project

Cam ended up being a custom comp cam with the specs above . I got all the parts to the machinist . Block has been line bored, clearenced and cylinders bored . Rotator should be at the balancer within the week . Looking at 2 weeks ( 14 days ) before the motor is done . Carb is finished . Dan Divinchi custom built a Holley 750 HP i had . 910 CFM was the flow numbers based on head flow , cam size , fuel specific gravity blah , blah , blah Should be a nice piece . Looks like we are going to chassis dyno the combo if it all comes together before the first race (30 days away) . If not i will run on the beat up motor the first race to allow a full 30 days before the next race or wait til summer break . Ill post some pics of everything coming up .

That would be a perfect cam for my street car. The cam in my 327 is a solid grind with just ten degrees less duration than yours. I only make a mild 480Hp with it ;)

Re: New project

I have been sweating it . i have always lived by a broad torque band is consistant . My Machinist told me peak torque around 5000 and the converter is 5200 . It will be 1.7 rockers so the lift will be up there also .

Re: New project

Just an update : i have not gotton the new motor ready to go in and last weekend was the season opener . I was at the house changing the oil and trans fluid in the old combo and was lokking over at the box with ths Divinci built 750 HP posted above > i had been working on another 750 demon to do some compaiarison to my existing demon and thought what the heck lets throw the divinci on . HAVE THIS MAN FIX YOUR CARBS ! i never touched a screw . right out of the box awesome response , good idle , crisp clean transition . Truck went .2 faster wit only fluid change and carb swap . this is in compaireable air conditions aples to apples .

On another note i was junk Saturday all day and started bad Sunday , but ended up going to 8 cars . Should have left the truck alone and switched to the long travel brake button . Still learning how to race every race .

Just an update : Got the door panels made from scratch . Local guy named Mclwayne did them for me . I think they came out great .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...ps64b117fb.jpg
I also added a new transbrake button . This is a delay button and can add up to .060 to my reaction times . Running at different tracks means different roll out , so i hope this will be another tool to help with that . Also looking for opinions . Let me know what you think.

Re: New project

No racing until Late may so im about to start the engine swap . A buddy called me up and mentioned the Ford show this weekend . So i went in my Powerstroke work truck . On the way in i bought the street Ford ttech card and ended up runner up in the class . The air and the truck were all over the place . In the semi finals i dialed 18.31 and it went 18.45 out the back door . In the finals i dialed hard at 18.45 and i broke out with a 18.32 on the brakes . You cant slow a 7700 # truck down from 74 mph like the Luv . Anyway:

Started the motor swap . Kinda had to talk myself into the swap as this motor has been a good one for 4 years 2010 was the date i stamped on the block . I plan to change the pistons and valve springs and just generally freshen up this motor and it will probably end up in the 49' . Tore down the old motor for removal .

Got a bunch done today , but both front header tubes have to be modified due to the angle of the spark plugs .

hotrod 80 04-06-2014 08:53 PM

Re: New project

A few more . Need to modify the headers and the crossmember . The cross member is a pretty standard deal and the front tubes interfere with the 2nd cylinder spark plugs . Getting close to making heat though .

Headers should be done tommorow . I lost my dad on Feb 20th and my mom passed on April 6th . Been a long couple of months . Really just using the race truck as therapy and an escape . Sometimes wonder if anybody even looks in here .

I don't post in here anymore, but I still read.

Along the way of life you meet a few people that you relate to enough to consider them friends. Even though it's long distance and we don't talk or get to go racing, I get to think of you each time i read a post in here.

Anyway, i am sorry about your loss of your mom and dad. I know from personal experience just what that's like.

Keep on hanging in there, and I'll keep praying for you.

Lee , thank you for your post . I was having a weak moment when i posted . I also consider you and your son friends . Thank you for the opertunity you gave me to have/build the 67' . It has been a bad month or so . If not for this forum i would have never met you . Guess thats why im still here .

As for the build . Got the headers back and the fittings for the trans cooler . all the parts are in place and my wife is out of town . If i can make heat tommorow AM and get to the track in time , im gonna run 6.50 or 5.80 index .

Sorry for your loss. I lost my mom this past fall, it has been very hard on our family.
I don't post on here very often mainly because I'm a novice. However I am learning through everyone's experiences and you guys are an inspiration to alot of folks like me that are out there looking in.
Keep up the great work.
And Thank You for sharing your knowledge.

Re: New project

I didnt get it finished in time to run last weekend . The driverside header had to be modified 3 different times to get it to fit correctly . and clear both #1 & #3 spark plug . The modded crossmember is in and the motor is started . I have the torsion bars back in place and all that is left is to set the preload and put it on the ground . Plans are to test tonight on street car night . Next weekend are the Nationals here in Baytown , so next weekend is out and the weekend of the third i have an IHRA race in Sealy . I need to test tonight or i will be testing in time trials . Here is a pretty crappy cell phone video of it running . I'll try to get pictures of the modded headers and crossmember up soon along with test results from tonight . Hoping for some 6.0's , but thinking 6.20-.30

I broke the ear on my custom carb and had to go back to my 750 Demon . I added 10 jets by the 4th pass . Ended up 90 square . Went 6.60 @106 and has more left . we'll find the rest of it on the chassis dyno in a week or so .
Here are the header and crossmember mods .

Pretty tight in there.
I don't know about you, but 6.60 on the first time out would sure make me grin.
Did the suspension seem to handle it well?
If I recall correctly, the old Luv was a handful to drive.

Carb is getting new billet base plate . We went to Pinevalley raceway in Lufkin saturday night and i was red in the left . Guess i was to conservative on the tree and went .040 and dead onwith an 8 for a .048 package and went hone . Truck was 6.77 to 6.83 @ 2978 DA .

hotrod 80 05-02-2014 10:04 AM

Re: New project

I got the carb back from Dan Divinci last night . Brand new billet base plate built from scratch . Truck sounds really happey . Idle quality is a ton better and throttle response is back .I will be running IHRA in Sealy this weekend and i really feel good about it . Still chasing a few little bugs here and their . Anyway heres the carb .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...psc0f40e04.jpg
I also let my Trail mini set up to long without draining the tank or adding stablizer so the tank got corroded and it has started plugging fuel filters . I was just changing filter then the petcock started leaking . While im waiting on the new tank and petcock for the old bike I ended up on craigslist and found a 2000 XR50R and decided I needed it .

Re: New project

Got the truck out last weekend . Good news didnt have to buy back . Saturday i got to 11 cars ,which is 1 round from the money . I got greedy and pushed the reation time to the edge and was -.004 red . This allowed me to see what was happening with the front tire pressure for sure . Sunday i started out set up teens . Won first round dialed 6.75 and was dead on 4 or 6.754 and .010 . Second round i dialed 6.76 and drew the same guy on a motorcycle . I had a .033 light and got down there and scrubbed 8 mph went through 6.84 . His win light came on ! I get to the ticket both and parked the truck , got out and said something is wrong . "i creamed the tree and went through first on the brakes . No way he won " . The guy pulls up next to me and says "what the heck happened, my win light came on" They changed my dial to 6.96 . I walk over and shake the guys hand and wish him luck . The track manager is in the booth and the guy wants to rerun . Manager says we dont rerun here . oh well . I use bi focals and i leave with my computer glasses on , so i cant see a quarter mie away . Point is i took the tree and that was acceptance of the dial in . Moral of the story check your dial in . I was having a good outing for sure . the truck made every pass on dial in .
