I am so anxious to really get going on this. I have my 6 lug discs and drop spindles and such on order. Once those arrive I'll start a build thread. Posted via Mobile Device |

My neighbor has a 62 with that same rear diff that went 332,000+ miles and when he had the rear gone through last summer and asked the shop to replace everything and the shop told him it would have lasted even longer but the neighbor opted to do the rebuild anyway since it was already out. The shop updated the rear with heavier duty parts and gave him a 3 year 30,000 mile warranty. The neighbor runs a 283/auto. Point is, you can update what you have. Just my opinion.. I am looking forward to following your build:metal: |

Are the gears easy to swap out?

According to that shop/vendor, the only thing left original were the axles and housing. (he, my neighbor, did a disk conversion later.) I only have build experience with 9 inch and old Olds/Pontiac 3rd member style rear ends so I don't know how "easy" it will be to swap out anything. However, it couldn't be all that hard. Because of my neighbors truck, I know it is possible. |

Re: Lost My 65
So you are saying that your neighbor, had a shop install a different model of 10 bolt carrier and gears into a Eaton HO32 housing? I have not heard of this before. Do you have any info as to what the application of the parts are?

However, Johns (the neighbor) truck is a GMC, 65 and as a GMC a leaf rear suspension. (63-66 GMC was only available with leaf rear) 63-87 rear ends all are a direct bolt in with leafs. Looking at the photos of Roberts diff and then walking next door and taking a peek under Johns truck, he has a 12 bolt, it was updated by a company in downtown Phoenix that deals with diffs exclusively and has for decades. Very knowledgable folks. I should have looked at Roberts photos before commenting. My mistake.... |

Re: Lost My 65
Still haven't got the brakes totally worked out on my 66, but I just needed to do something on my 65 today.
Got all the old carpet scraps and fiberglass insulation crap job tore out of the cab. Took the air-cleaner off and gave the carb and good cleaning with Gunk Carb Cleaner. Engine runs nice now. Next will be getting the brakes good, and then I can drive it some this summer. I will be doing this to tide me over until the winter when I upgrade to front discs: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=460791 |
Re: Lost My 65
Got the brakes split using a impala mc like ChiefRocka suggested.
That thread is closed, but jocko's thread is still open: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=487384 |
Re: Lost My 65
Built me a pressure bleeder out of stuff I had lying around.
Worked great to bleed the brakes. Used it on my 66, and now on my 65. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...5/IMAG0993.jpg |
Re: Lost My 65
Got the brakes worked out and gave her a good wash.
Engine runs really nice. I'm good for now. I'll tinker on the body & interior here and there until winter when I plan to upgrade the front to discs. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...IMAG1010-1.png http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...IMAG1005-1.png |
Re: Lost My 65
It is looking good...wish I had one that looked that good to drive around....Keep up working on her and improving her!

Re: Lost My 65
What rims do you have, I really like those?? Think they are still available???

They were on it when I bought her back. I've done some searching and can't find them. There's a couple members here that also have them. One member has the 5-lug, and another has the 5 spoke. Mine has 6 lugs and 6 spokes. I really like them too. Thanks. I'll contact the previous owner and see what he knows about them. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Lost My 65
Been watching your thread for a while,I'm glad you were able to get your truck back and getting it back on the road.Looks good.

Re: Lost My 65
Thanks for the info on the rims, I'll see what I can find also.

Take her on some nice long drives, some nice outings like car shows, and spend lots of quality time with her and before you know it you will be in love all over again :)

Re: Lost My 65
I replaced the turn signal mechanism in the steering wheel today and seem to have developed a problem with the coupling.
The steering wheel turns but it doesn't turn the wheels. The shaft spins inside this coupling: http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...5/IMAG1020.jpg |
Re: Lost My 65
That is kinda strange.
Maybe mine is different because of the year but mine is one shaft from the wheel to the rag joint on my steering gear box. Too bad you are so far away. I have a couple of stock columns laying around here. |
Re: Lost My 65
Yeah, my 66 is one solid shaft.
|
Re: Lost My 65
The photo is showing GM’s version of a sliding steering column U-joint (plagued with quality problems/recalls in the intermediate shaft version). It appears yours has either broken or pulled apart. The arrow is pointing to what appears to be the cross shaft that should be riding in the side slots marked with the X’s. This disconnect could have resulted in a catastrophic failure on the road, and needs some serious investigation/repair.

Re: Lost My 65
Thanks Mark,
I've been searching the forums on how to replace it with something that isn't danger prone. Quote:

Re: Lost My 65
If the shaft heading to the steering box is solid with no rag joint at the bottom, you may be able to buy a Borgeson joint that fits the splines on the bottom of the steering column, and the other end matches the lower shaft splines. And if the distance between the end of the two shafts if too far for a standard u-joint, and vibration reducer may fit perfectly in the same spot. It might be worth a call or an email to them for some advice.

Re: Lost My 65
I found the issue.
I guess when I pulled up on the shaft to remove the steering wheel, the whole column moved up because the bolts holding the column in place were loose. I got things lined up and slid the column back down. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...5/IMAG1021.jpg Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Lost My 65
are those swiveling union couplers thingies really dangerous? damn i thought that they were the way to go when changing to power in the box steering. just last weekend i got one from salvage... what is the best way to use the couplers, what will make them safer?

Any specs or more pics of the pressure bleeder? I'd like to make me something like that. |
Re: Lost My 65
It's just a cheapo garden sprayer I had laying around.
I had some pressure gauges from an old job I did years back. A small chunk of wood with a piece rubber. And a length of hose and a couple clamps. It was a crude slap together - but it works great. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...5/IMAG1029.jpg http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...5/IMAG1027.jpg http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...5/IMAG1028.jpg |
Re: Lost My 65
Thanks man!
What did you use around the fittings? JB Weld or some kind of silicone? |
Re: Lost My 65
I am sure looking forward to your 65 on a 60-62 frame build.
I found that my 58 Pontiac engine mounts that are out of a 58 GMC truck line up with the center mounts on the cross member etc.. etc... looks like a bolt in deal and I have a 62 swb frame.. You also said that they make a disk conversion for the 60-62 frames and I think I can fab a air spring setup for the front so ... ;) As I said.. waiting to watch what you will be doing. :flag: :5150: |

Re: Lost My 65
I think I mentioned in my 66 service truck thread that a friend of mine was giving me a couple Fiero buckets. Well, he came across a couple more, but with speakers in the headrests. :D I guess it was a rare option.
I mounted these in my 65, and will be swapping the backs that have the speakers when he gets those seats removed. I told him I wanted to give him something for all these seats - He said how about all four seats for $50. I know it may look totally 80's, but I'm fine with that. :D http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...5/IMAG1036.jpg Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Lost My 65
They look good to me. Are they comfy? That's what matters.
|
Re: Lost My 65
They are surprisingly very comfy.
I originally just figured when he offered them for free, they would work until I could afford buddy buckets. I found them so comfy, I told him. Then he said he came across the ones with the speakers in the headrests. I'm pretty settled on keeping them for good and down the road have another one of friends who does upholstery wrap them in material similar to what was on my lost buddy buckets. |
