5000 series. Budd wheels always seem to look better.

Re: GM Semis
Interesting pictures. Do you know for sure that they are 5000's? Especially the truck in the 2nd picture, if it had a 478 it could very well be a 6500.
That truck sure reminds me of my old 6500. Even right down to the Lumber it is hauling. I drove a '62 GMC 6500 back in the '70's. Budd Wheels (Disc) vs Dayton Wheels (Spokes). It's a West Coast thing vs an East Coast thing. You will find that most truckers in the West prefered Budd's and most in the East prefer Daytons. I've been studying that for years and don't really know the answer why. I personally, from the East, follow along with the other East Coasters and prefer Daytons, lol. Even the guys that work on them seem to follow the same suit. We had another debate on them not to long ago on the other truck board. Both those trucks are either '64 or '65's. By sight, there is really no way of telling. Thanks for posting them. Bill |
Re: GM Semis
No one on my side of the hill likes spokes, I ended up with them on the one C80 and the hyster 25 ton, for me they are kind of a novelty. Budds on all my stuff are kind of the same old same old thing. I painted one of mine up real purdy couple days ago, working my way around the truck.

Factorystock, how do you tell the difference between the 9000 axle and the 11 axle, my 1965 C80 has the wide fenders and cupped bearing caps.

Hard to tell, but very possible, there were many different design cast spoke wheels. Look for the data plate near the kick panel. What is your GVW? Do you have air brakes and the 23,000 rear axle? Most air trucks with the 23 rear have the 11 front.

I wasn't into numbers back then, but I remember the weight and capacity painted on the side of the truck adding up to 32,000. I agree that it was 11 Fronts and 23 Rears. Bill |

I believe my '62 GMC 6500 had 9 Fronts. ...just want to make that clear. Bill |

Although when the truck got reconditioned in about 1972, the mechanic added a couple of more Leafs in-between the others on the Front End. When I went in the garage one day to check on the progress, the truck looked pretty much finished and I asked him when he was going to take it off the jacks. He looked at me funny and said "It's already off the jacks"!! The truck sat pretty close to the truck pictured above. It probably ended up really having about 11 Fronts after the spring work he did on it. I remember him saying that it should have been that way in the first place. Bill |

Re: GM Semis
Interesting pictures.
First one is a nice Heavy Medium. Second one only has 5 Lugs on the Front. That's pretty different for a Tandem. Interesting place for a Spare too. We were just talking about Spares. Third is a nice Heavy '62. Just about has to be a C-80. Wonder what is under the hood? Fourth one looks Detroit powered. Probably a 4-71. Bill |

Picture #7: Now which one would I take. The Corvette? or the Titan?
...hard choice. (OK, I'm waiting for someone to say neither. ...they'll take the girl). |

Hey Bill, I liked your over view so much I thought I'd give you some more, different people see different things. Its like pic number 4, look at the way that cheesey little muffler is mounted like that thing is going to do that 471 any good anyway, and see the explosive placards on the trailer. I like the southwest tractor the best on this batch.
|
Re: GM Semis
Yeah, that Southwest tractor is nice. Under it looks like another 6500. Y'all are really finding them lately.
Bill |
Re: GM Semis
I've tried to google part of that southwest address on the building but have not had any luck yet. Anyone got any ideas on state and location?

Re: GM Semis
Other than what's on the sign, the only other indication I can see is the Spoke Wheels which, of course, usually means East Coast.
The truck looks brand new and I can't tell if it is a '60 or a '61, but I see 3 newer vehicles there. Two are '62 Chevy cars. Bill |
