Re: my radical 60 build
jonzcustomshop,
I keep looking at the rear and thinking about tail lights. What about these! 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 GT http://image.mustangandfords.com/f/9...+taillight.jpg http://image.mustangandfords.com/f/9..._XR_7+rear.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2633/...1df3df77ee.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1307572249 |
Re: my radical 60 build
yep, those are tempting, I think I have a set of the concave ones...

been working on blending the chevy and plymouth fenders together....
used what was left of my big truck fenders for the upper edge and rear brace. cut up a hood for the top edge of the fender. bent up some metal bar to form a scoop toward the front of the body line. put some tape on it and painted it to finish the front edge of the scoop! (this will be a tough piece of metal to form.. I need to take the deep concave curve, and make it taper to flat on the edge of the scoop.) mocking up the wheel well... I moved it forward 2 inches to better line it up w/ the front wheel, still have to roll it outside to get a better idea of where exactly it will look right. |
Re: my radical 60 build
Good to see you making some progress on this again Jon. That looks like a lot of head scratching, cutting, trimming and tacking
|
Re: my radical 60 build
yep, kind of frustrating and fun at the same time... had myself painted in a corner with the scoop area.. the lower chevy body line if I had continued it would have ended on the side of the headlight ring...there just didn't seem like there would be a way to get it to flow, I had tried a scoop idea farther back on the fender before, and it hadn't worked, so that idea was off the table.. then yesterday I had a little brainstorm about putting the scoop up front , and it seems to work.
leafing through a few of my 60's little magazines helped too. seems that that was a customizers way out on a lot of ill fitting combinations in the 60's... where ever it didn't fit..just throw in a scoop! |
Re: my radical 60 build
Nice work Jon. It's fun to watch your progress on this one!
|
Re: my radical 60 build
I just read this whole thing and am absolutely amazed, my head hurts from just looking at that roof chop. Mad skills man.
|
Re: my radical 60 build
Man that thing is so krazy kool, I love seeing the updates! I think the Cougar tail lights would be sick on there.

Re: my radical 60 build
this thread is awsome!!! crazy work man:metal::metal::metal::metal::metal:

Re: my radical 60 build
Love the truck. Update?
|
Re: my radical 60 build
me too....
|
Re: my radical 60 build
looks like its been a year since I have touched this... time does fly, all I have done is procure a fender so I can finish up the left rear taillight panel...
working on a couple other projects... |
Re: my radical 60 build
I would love to see the bed. If I remember right, when I looked through your pics you had some photoshop stuff but not pics of your creation..
|
Re: my radical 60 build
pics in post # 233 and 234 are about as far as I have gotten...
I have a straight front bed panel to replace the bent one that is on it, and have it set up for the new bed floor, but haven't torn apart the bed to re-install it. I came to a stoping point with the left bed side I was looking down the fender in the front trying to get stuff lined up, and noticed a "wow" in the bedside, put a straight edge against it and it has a 1 inch drop from the wheelwell to the cab, so I am probably have to re-do that piece, that is where I stopped.... |

Wondering if you have any updates??? Caught this thread and it inspired me to attack some things I wanted to try. Looks great so far and just waiting for some more greatness.:metal::metal::metal:

....well this is consistent
looks like I work on this once a year... got the garage cleaned up , and re mocked up the rear and bed... got the passenger fender lined out, and did some brainstorming on how to finish the top of the back of the bed... If I am gonna get my shop back this has to get welded up so I am going to go after it. |

Re: my radical 60 build
Nice progress. :metal: I just rearranged my shop to. Got the 65 back on the lift. Now it's time to get more serious. ;)

Re: my radical 60 build
i think i seen an elcamino based on that year impala , it looked realy good
its going to be hard to shape those inward curves from scratch though getting existing wings from a wreck or at least having some trimpieces to cap those wings with might help a lot in shaping the wings in the first place |
Re: my radical 60 build
Just went through your whole build on Sunday.....definitely radical like the title says. Looks like a ton of work but very creative!!!:metal:

I decided against the scoop that I was trying out in post 243. (maybe waiting a year to weld it up does help!)
I ended up with 2 sets of fenders, because the white ones were rusty. cutting the wheel well out did not leave enough material to form the side, so that was why I was trying to do the scoop. A brainstorm later , and I cut the piece I needed out of the junk white fender... it seems to fit and flow right. I dropped the wheel well about 2 inches, and moved it forward an inch: that seems to put it in the right place . now I need to get the right side done before I forget what I did on this side!! |
Re: my radical 60 build
cool to see more progress on this build!!!! crazy work man!!!

working on the hood hinges....
cut the ends off some fender wells, capped them and turned them upside down, then bolted a set of 60 Pontiac hood hinges to them (just something I had laying around that seemed to work) then I cut the inside out of a junk 60 Plymouth hood I have to start the hood mount process..... |
Re: my radical 60 build

I am trying to over build the mounting area on the hood, 60 Plymouth hoods are problematic in the hinge area, they tend to bend.
so I will weld on some support, and then cover it with a thick piece of sheet metal, all the holes marked are where I will plug weld it to the support and surface.... |
Re: my radical 60 build
Man, you're crazy! I love it!!!!!

I had to tear the whole box apart and re-do it... the front bed panel that I used had a bow in it, so I replaced it with a straight one, and the whole left bedside had to be redone.....it had a bow in it that was hard to see when looking, but if you put a straight edge on it, it curved inward from the wheel well to the cab by about a half inch.
so all the blue is new... it is much better now. now I can get started on welding up the new panels for the inside. |

starting on the bed floor....
used some cross sills that came with the 61 bed, put 1/8 inch steel plate (I think that is the size, it's thick) for the floor, the thought there is it won't get bent up if I throw stuff in the bed. the center had to be thinner, maybe 16-18 guage? , so they could bend it, so I braced it up with some angle iron. |

got the wheel tubs figured out.
I used some tubs out of a 65. I then used part of a 61 tub to lengthen the front around 3 inches, and then shortened the back by about 2 inches. I also cut about 1.5 inches off the side to get them in closer to where the tire sits. |
