Junkyard tour, found these ladies.... Pretty rough, but onc the pride of the fleet.... 427, tandem, twin stick, Custom. The other has a nice PTO winch with a three speed aux transmission, going back in the spring to investigate.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Interesting trucks.
The first GMC must have been some truck when it was new, air brakes and all. The other GMC, going by the grille, is a '66. Bill |
Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Yeas, that first GMC was sure a fine one.

Here is my contribution to this thread. I picked this up last week about 30 miles from home. It is a 71' GMC 6500 with a really good running 427, 5 speed, 2 speed rear, and air brakes. The previous owner passed away a few years ago and it looks like he took pretty good care of it. I plan on using it to pull my 32' GN trailer.
I still have to get the title transferred, change all the fluids, and clean it up good. I am curious as to what kinda mileage I can expect though. It has 6.50 gears on the high side and 42" tall 10.00-20s which should work out to 3400 rpm at 65 mph. I'm hoping to average 7 mpg towing approximately 16,000 lbs. Anyone think that kinda mileage is possible on long trips if driven right? |

Nice! Love it!

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
I sure like that truck. Ans,what a classy combo that will be pulling a camper. I can't say from experience, but 7 mpg doesn't sound off to me.I can only compare with what you say about rpm @ 65 compared to my 3/4t 4wd that is at that same rpm at 65. It gets 12.5,maybe less going over 60,but it's much lighter. So,I'd guess 7 would be possible.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Obviously I must not be driving right, I average around 8 mpg with my 68 3/4 ton:lol:

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Thanks
I've been known to not always drive right myself :burnout: I'll take it on 100 mile get acquainted trip here soon and see what it will do. I usually don't beat on em too hard pulling a big trailer. That can get expensive real quick in more ways than one. Here are few pictures of my COE (post 487) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...82#post3650582 |

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
I'm not too familiar with these old big rigs and medium duty trucks. Can someone please explain how the twin stick shifters worked? I am however loving all these pictures!

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
With Twin Sticks, one trans is the Main and the other the Auxiliary. To go through all the gears you shift the Aux 2 to 3 times, depending on the trans, to the Main once till you go through all the gears. There are also many different types. There are 5 X 2 Duplex's (usually in Macks), 5 X 3 Triplex's and 5 X 4 Quadraplex's, the most common, as well as a couple of others. Not to make it too confusing, there are more than one different Quadraplex but the most common Quadraplex is actually only shifted 13 times. Some of the gears in some of the trans can be shifted both at the same time, but most have to be shifted one at a time. When one at a time and after shifting the Main, you need to bring the Revs up in Nuetral to get the Aux back into Low. There are actually a good number of videos on YouTube showing Twin Stick shifting. One is Twin Stick Pappy. I believe that one is a Triplex. Once you click onto to that video, many others will show up. They are the hardest of all to shift and the most challenging and some of the YouTube guys don't always do the best job.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Here is the video I mentioned above. He is one of the better shifters on YouTube. You will notice that he uses no clutch most of the time, but has to use it a couple of times. I myself, although in the minority, like to use the clutch all of the time.
It's not a Chevy but a fine example of an old Mack. It is kind of hard to find a good Chevy or GMC example of Twin Sticks: |
Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Although I like Twin Sticks, my favorite trans is the 10-Speed Road Ranger. Here is a pretty good example of one. For those not familiar a 10-Speed, it Shifts 5 with the Button Down and 5 with the Button Up. Although in this video, he starts out in 3rd. He also starts in 3rd at time 2:46. Notice he also uses the clutch just at certain times. It is also a good example of a great sounding 6-71 Detroit:

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
About those Chevy (1967-84) and GMC (1970-84) B-series school buses with the '67-style chassis: that design ran through December 1983, and in January 1984 adopted the design of the '73-'87 medium-duty cowls. A 1984 Chevy School Bus brochure confirms the new design introduction.

Air Brakes with the old style pedal in bus #5561. Don't believe I ever saw one before.
Was your Astro Detroit powered? |

My 1988 Kodiak has that type pedal and has air brakes. I have built several 84 thru 88 C7000s & Topkicks that had the same type pedal.

Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Found this C90 on the way to a cemetery the other day...
It has an old 'For Sale' sign in the windshield. Anything written long ago has since faded. I don't know anything about these bigger trucks. Wonder what year model it is? https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0...7_3CA675E9.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-V...8_D432E496.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-V...8_1EAFA448.jpg |
Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
Interesting truck. It is at least a 1970 or newer, but probably not any newer than a '74. It has a 10-Speed Road Ranger trans and most likely has a 6-71 Detroit Diesel in it.
Strange it has a low GVW though at 29,900. It probably only has a 7000 Front Axel, which was the minimum. Wondering what they would take for just the tractor? Bill |
Re: 67-72 C/K/T-40's-90's!
I'd like to have the tractor and trailer.
