Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Hey Slacker, is that ALL you got done today?:haha::haha:
I'm impressed Joe. Y'all ain't foolin' around are ya? The lift adapter obviously worked out well. Were you happy with the way it lifted the cab? What is the plan for the cab now that it's in the bed of your squarebody? What's on the agenda for tomorrow? Yea, I know I'm full of questions but hey, inquiring minds want to know!! |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
 Well keep im mind for the slacker is that he did all that without air tools!! He is the man! :metal:
|
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Makes me tired just looking at all of the work that was done in the pictures.

yeah, this thing worked great!! even with limited space, you can spin the cab and turn the picker. it is the slickest thing ever!!! thanks again to suicide63 for pointing the thread out and thanks to Solver for posting dims!!! I need to find a soda blaster, gonna get the cab blasted.....but first I want to build a tilt dolly;) tomorrow the plan is to get the 700R4 mocked up and a cross member built, then load up the frame and take it to the car wash. might not all get done tomorrow:waah: after the wash, i need to weld up some stuff on the frame and order/build/scavenge a gas tank for the rear Quote:
we did have a 18v dewalt impact...it helps a lot I want a big ole compressor so I can use my air tools:waah: Quote:
sorry I had to remove some of you guy's smilies....there was too many....wouldn't let me post |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Joe, I'm happy for you. Now I want to build one of those lift adapters. Don't know if I will or not. I'm so close to getting the cab on the frame it wouldn't benefit me at this stage of the game. Good luck with everything.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
You're making some outstanding progress Joe! :metal:
I would just find a sandblaster that doesn't use silica sand and take the cab to him instead of soda. I've heard of some paint issues from blasting with soda. |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Quote:
what issues have you heard of? you think I should find one that uses walnut shells or ??? just don't want regular sand to heat up the metal and warp it. i haven't really researched it much yet.... |

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
thanks for the info
i will look further into it I talked to Musclerodz awhile back and he told me of a blasting company around here that uses plastic media, so i will look into it  |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
A fella that I work with sells/restores mopars and parts. He swears by the plastic media blasting.
As Captainfab had stated, if there is any of the soda left in cracks and crevices (and how would you possibly get it all out of the seams??) it can cause you paint heartache later. On the subject of using sand, someone that is experienced with a sandblaster will not have any issues with metal warpage. The problem is finding a reputable 'blaster in my area. |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Yeap, if you dont know what your doing, sandbasting WILL definately heat-warp the metal...I seen it first hand on my buddys 69 GMC hood.

cool, i will be looking into the plastic next week......
not much progress today moved the engine perches to the forward holes (still need to drill the cross member for the lower bolts) and mounted the 700R4 to the 283 for mock up....found out the motor mounts are SHOT, the rubber has completely separated. I need to go pick up motor mounts and a trans mount before I can build a cross member :banghead: i have a set of the newer style motor mounts and perches that i'm debating on using........ disclaimer: the trans is no where near the proper/final position, it is just sitting on blocks to hold it up for now..... Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Lookin' good Joe,I like your fabricated "cab lifter" and it's adjustable.
As far as blasting,I've been using coal slag or Black Beauty fine grit,it will remove rust and paint. It will heat up if you stay in one spot too long, but doesn't pit very much. I found that for paint removal that a steam cleaner works really well. |

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
That cab lifting tooling is outstanding! :metal:
Time to start renting it out, or sell plans for us to make it. Looks like it worked slicker than snot! Congratulations on your design and follow-thru. |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Man seeing yours apart kinda annoys me because it makes me feel super lazy for not doing anything.
Thanks for all the cab pictures. Nice to see that gizmo in action |

feel free to borrow it any time you are around OKC;) it was pretty easy to build, the thread link posted back a page or two has all the dimensions on it. i'll never do the find some buddies/ a-frame/come-a-long thing again:metal: Quote:
well work is getting in the way of my free time again so it will probably be the weekend before I get anything else done :waah:;) oh, i did get the cab unloaded at work tonight. the cab jig works well with a forklift also :metal: now I need to get my cab dolly built! |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Man Joe you are one busy guy!!! Keep up the good work, I'll have to come check 'er out one of these days once you get it back together (probably soon from the way you work lol). Let me know if you need a hand, I'm just down the road :metal:
