Not sure what motor you have but 430 HP for a small block is a lot. It takes serious internals in a mouse motor to make that much power. It should break that TH350 but your stall speed is low for a 430 hp small block.
:metal: That's not saying your motor isn't what you say it is, I am sure it makes plenty of power. I guess I am wound a bit different when it comes to cars and trucks I build. I want to know how they do in a straight line. I like to sort out the combination on the track and running it helps me accomplish this. :lol: I am not bashing you, don't get me wrong. I was just curious if you had run your truck. I am getting frustrated with my 63 truck. I am starting over on my pro-street frame. I just didn't like the way it was looking and then I have this dang motor staring at me every time I walk out in the storage room. Started life as a 400 Pontiac, dumped a 428 crank in it, (440 inches), sealed power flat top pistons, H-beam rods, ARP fasteners, used some 6X-4 iron heads with 2.11/1.77 valves. Roller springs, rockers, lifter and cam and a dual quad topping it off. I have a TH400 with a 2800 stall speed torque converter and the 9 inch with 3.50 gears. I can't wait to get her out to Firebird dragway and sort t her out. :sumo: The other change I am making is dumping the 4 link and going back to the trailing arms. I need to find some that I can use on the narrowed 9 inch. Oh, and I completely agree on the power of Christ.... :metal: :metal: |

I hear so many people talk about porting and polishing street heads... polishing helps the fuel puddle at low RPM and that isn't good. Porting is all that needs to be done on street heads. 3000 stall speed would be kind of a drag (old school term for not nice) to drive on the street. 2600-2800 should be fine as it gives the motor 400-600 rpm to spin up while the cam starts working but frankly the "specs" for where the engine works is entirely dependent on what combination you are using in the motor. Torque rating is a huge denominator in engine design as well. Your motor sounds healthy in the video I saw. However, to make over 400 hp your mouse motor needs to make about 1.25 HP per cubic inch... that is significant. :metal: |

I was blown away with the cool factor. It still had a front bumper, did not have a Moon tank up front, no blower sticking through the hood, and no obvious fenderwell headers, but it screamed performance. It may or may not have been competitive at the track, but it certainly would have been a hit at the local drive in theater, and an efficient chick magnet. My truck doesn’t do a lot of things very well. Soft springs severely limit load capacity. It’s impractical for basic transportation because it spins 3,000 rpms at 60 mph resulting in lousy gas mileage at freeway speeds. Windshield wipers and heating are marginal keeping it grounded most of the winter months. And although it will get there quickly - it doesn’t have much of a top end. A genuinely fast car, a performance rice burner, or even a motorcycle could easily leave me in the dust. But the driving experience and attention it generates continue to be fun every time it leaves the garage. I don’t have the finances to make my truck consistently competitive without breakage. Being enjoyable and attention getting is enough for me. I feel the same way about pro/street cars and trucks. It doesn’t matter to me if they “are” fast, or just “look” fast. At a rod run I’m still going to stop and look at all the details and admire the craftsmanship that went into the build. |

I don't run brackets in any car or truck and I am not trying to be the fastest truck on earth either. Personally, as I said I like to go out to the "run what you brung" night and run a vehicle out. I usually find stuff that needs attention and get it sorted out. I have been curious what the "full metal yellow jacket" truck can do and know that like you, he has an old photo of a truck that he sees as "the goal". Hope I don't come off as trying to push someone one way or another. I build motors and love to hear detail about them. I learn from others mistakes and accomplishments both. Hey guys, you don't have to have a fast truck, just a fast SOUNDING truck. My truck has a 400 hp 383 in it and it'll pin you to the seat but I wouldn't consider it a really fast truck. It has a nice lopey idle and 2 4" round Magnaflow mufflers that are pretty much only technically "mufflers" so it sounds fast. I thought for sure every punk kid in a Mustang or import racer wannabe would be challenging me at the lights but so for its only been 1 kid in his mom's 4 door and I think that was just so he could hear how it sounded when I step on it.:lol:
At least you're not rushing the truck and just throwing it together only to be disappointed with it later. |

Your right creep, throwing something together is a certain recipe for failure and disappointment.
:metal: Building HP and more importantly torque... is something that needs to be planned for. :smoke: Getting it to the tires is a trick in itself too and doesn't come by chance. There are lots of trucks on this site that show lots of hard work, forethought and determination, I for one respect that. ;) |

No updates but heart aches..:lol: It seems my transmission needs to be rebuilt. So now its who I can trust to rebuild it and rebuild it right or just buy a new one with a warranty. The transmission came out of a 1970 Chevrolet C-10 or a C-20 Custom Camper Special Long Wheel Base Pickup my dad had at the time. So checked with Jegs and Summit and it seems Summit is cheaper on shipping. Yea, I know. You see'em in alot in Big Blocks too.
They are supremely durable and hold up better under alot of torque. Well if I did go with a TH400 I would have to change the crossmember. Right now I just don't wanna change anymore stuff on my truck right now. TH350 will be fine for her. I'll hang on to the old trans because it's a heavy duty TH350 out of a truck. I also need to get a new radiator. The one I have now is ok but it's a matter of time when it's gonna rust trough at the bottom. I had it re-cored years ago. Money is tight right now and I have to watch the green stamps. I am gonna have positive traction on her one day. Got to get the bed done, Cadillac lights frenged in, doors fixed, new wiring, inner fender wells, tilt steering, and a few others before she is ready for paint. I want to make sure everything is done and fully operational before she's painted. Because after she's painted I just want to drive her and that's it.:lol:;) No more working on her. Ha ha:lol: Yea, that will never happen. So now for the rest of the year we will drive dads car to the shows. Gives me a chance to drive her... teehee. I love driving it when pops lets me. I had a 350 behind my 400 pontiac.. lasted 3 runs and broke.. dumped $400 into it and it lasted 9 more runs and broke. TH350's are never an option in any V8 build I do. Maybe a 6 cylinder. BUT!
