Thanks. Deep into this other S10 frame swap right now. As soon as I get some time, I'll start a thread for it.

Awesome work so far.

[QUOTE=skymangs;6475272]I have another LS in the corner that's going to get carb'd with MSD's 6LS controller.
QUOTE]

I have access to a LS motor, I was thinking about carbing it and throwing it into the '79. Is there a reason you are going carb'd v.s. keeping it fuel injected?

Blue Bomber... No reason, just to try it. I'm thinking about squeezing that one in my 53 Packard Clipper Custom 2dr sedan. I like the idea of a modern driveline with an old school flavor. Plus I'll remote those coil packs behind the dash, so it will look pretty clean.

So I finally got some time to wrench on my 49 today! :metal:

First up, I picked up a '54 box. I really like the flat tops, so was was specifically looking for a 54 or early 55. Picked this one up complete with tailgate for $200. After getting the remnants of the bedwood, bedstrips, and 200lbs of mud and trees out of it, I mocked it up on the 49. Turned out to be absolutely rust free, and very straight, save a little damage to the drivers rear top rail. Can't believe I got this thing for $200!

I also scored a Fulton visor for $50... More on that later.

spent some time today getting the brackets for my Gen II compac ac unit built. I am trying to finish up everything behind the dash before I weld it in.

I also made an 1/8th inch panel with welded studs for the cowl vent lever. That way the bolts won't show on the firewall anymore.

And I finished up the firewall recession. Those corner pieces were a PITA! got them done and welded in finally though.

I also welded up a set of control arms for my buddy Chris's 31 Sedan project. These are the same design as my truck.

Tomorrow I pick up the 64 Impala SS, I'll post that work in the "Alternate tinkerings" page.

Chris, where do you come up with all these finds on the old sheet metal, bed looks good..Jim

Re: 49 ls1

Nice bed! Real nice price! That's what I gave for mine and it's nowhere near as nice or complete as yours. Mine was both sides, the front panel and the rear cross sill. Usable for sure, but definitely in need or some repairs. Thankfully I already had a tailgate.
Is that heat and a/c unit an aftermarket piece?

skymangs 02-16-2014 01:06 AM

Re: 49 ls1

Jim; I've got friends in low places? LoL

Billy; Yeah, I felt that I got a pretty good deal on the bed. Had to do some digging, and pop the old truck in 4x, but it was worth it. AC is actually a Vintage air mock up unit (no guts, just the case), it's Vintage Air's GEN II Compac. I like them better than any other unit because the hose setup doesn't stick way out the side, or into the firewall. Makes for much easier hose routing, and it's able to fit into smaller places because of it.

I bought a mock-up case, so I can get cabs/firewalls prepped before dropping $470 on the unit, just so it can sit around and collect dust till the paint's done. $50 well spent!

Thanks Josh, work will slow for the next week, till I get this Impala done. I have a buddy coming from Colorado for 2 weeks in April to thrash on the bodywork and finish up the driveline/frame. :metal: It'll be good to work with an old friend again!

This may be a little off topic, but I wanted to share some pics of my new '56 GMC 6400... It really is a nice clean old truck. Nice cab corners, nice eyebrows, nice floor boards, no real rust to speak of!

This one will be going on an '83 Chevy 1ton dually chassis....

Re: 49 ls1

Sarge, I don't see any pics. Sounds like a cool truck. I got a 54' chevy 6400 all original dump truck, its a beast. I like the sounds of your build though.

Sorry, edited. Accidentally hit submit before pics were uploaded. I'm thinking long bed '56 step side, widened to cover the duals. It'll be my Tow Pig for my Show Pig!

Thanks Billy, 99, and Oldman3. That one's gonna happen when things slow down a bit. I got a nasty email informing me that I'm supposed to deploy to AF in the end of April... I'm fighting it, but not sure if I'll win yet or not.

My weekend of '49 turned out to be more like a Sunday of '49. I had to go to Topeka for an estimate yesterday, took all day pretty much.

I have another job coming in on next weekend, so I'll get to spend some time on the '49 this week.

I got the trans tunnel finished up today, and spent some time figuring out my steering column bracket this afternoon. Since I'm using the '55 dash, all the factory column bracing got cut away, and will be replaced with 1/8" steel. Here's some pics.

Here's the final couple. it's nice and low for a trans tunnel, and left me room for that Lokar 16" shifter behind the hump. :metal:

squirts; Thank you
Jim; thanks, I hope I do too... too many projects going on to take a 6 month break now!

Spent a little time in the shop today. Got the dash re-mocked up, got the column bracket built and tacked in. I need to finish mocking up the column, then take the dash back out, seam in the column bracket, and make a gusset for it to a plate on the firewall. Then I'm ready to start welding the dash in. I'm so close to bodywork I can almost taste it!

Re: 49 ls1

Thanks Elco... Hoping to get the column set today. I just ordered pro-line brushed billet louvers for the center of my dash, and the AC control panel I intend to use. I'll likely do the dash work before I weld it in.

sarge, looks awesome, that dash could be factory it fits so nice. hope you don't have to leave for duty. such a shame what their pointless wars do to our families and country. sadly from here on out we are gonna always gonna be in war because now we can use the term terrorism, which is a wash.

Thanks 99 and xpickup. I'm hoping to evade the sandbox orders, but it won't be the first time, so it's gonna be what it's gonna be I guess.

Updates.

Column is in, upper and lower brackets finished up. Tomorrow I'll pull the dash back out, and do a gusset from the column support bracket (suspended from the cowl) out to the firewall, with some 1/8" plate. Should be plenty strong then.

Re: 49 ls1

Thanks, I really like the way the tunnel and the column came out. When it's done, you won't be able to see the column bracket at all, so it will look like it "floats" below the dash.

Todays updates. Got the column bracket all finished up, speed holes and all. Also made a tab so the wiper motor bracket welds to the new column bracket. I'm going to go with Classic Parts electric motor on this one, just so I have one less part to fiddle with.

I also filled the firewall hole I cut out to mock up the column. And did some rust repair to the drivers side A pillar. Next on the list is repairing that dvr side cab corner, welding in the dash, and building some bracketry for that Fulton visor.

Re: 49 ls1

Chris, bracket looks good. Never seen a door pillar rust in those areas, but there's a lot I haven't seen...Jim

Re: 49 ls1

cool cool, yeah I went with the newport from classic parts USA made one for like 200 I think, little steep but I didn't wanna dicker with anymore and that was the last main thing my truck needed when I finished it. I am however gonna maybe try some of the way less expensive motors you see out there, just fab up a bracket and see if I don't destroy something. $200 just to have a 2 speed wiper is a bit steep, but I wanted to support something usa made, the china one is 160. Looking good.

skymangs 03-06-2014 06:34 PM

Re: 49 ls1

Thanks guys, This truck had a hole cut in the center of the roof, right above the windshield (I assume for an antenna). I'm sure that it allowed water and debris to run down the channels and settle on top of the upper door hinge. I found a lot of debris behind the metal when I cut out the rust.

Bear Claw latches and plates got here today, unfortunately I was sent a set of "small" latches instead of the large ones I ordered. Got it fixed, but I have to wait for the correct ones to get here.
