It's expensive but I've heard a lot of guys really like the front runner setup from Billet Specialties. Nice progress by the way! |

I just got a drive shaft made at a local shop, Driveline Service of Santa Rosa. There is plenty of clearance to the trailing arm crossmember. The u-joints are 1350s front and rear.

Re: Lss3
Nice.....

Re: Lss3
Let me just suggest that drivelines look incredible in a gloss black powdercoating, our 73 got that treatment and it puts my sprayed black on to shame haha

I’ve made a bit of progress on the air intake. The parts are all from Spectre Performance. I fabricated the aluminum bracket that holds the air filter box. A local shop welded the 90 to the box. I still need to make a steel bracket to weld to the radiator support to mount everything to. I plan on powdercoating everything once it’s done.

Re: Lss3
Nice detailed work......Hope the fires didn't affect you too much....

Re: Lss3
The Tubbs fire came pretty close. We were evacuated, but were able to come back after only day. Flames were visible from me front yard for several nights. We moved all of our pictures and important documents to family in Healdsburg. There wasn't much I could do about the truck. I have a friend with a trailer, but I didn't have any place to store it that was safer than my house. It seemed fires were everywhere. All is good now. Thanks for the concern.

Re: Lss3
We were concerned about the pocket fire spreading down from the north.....but the expected winds didn't happen so we stayed put....We were on edge expecting the fire to jump containment.....Many friends lost their houses and classic cars...I feel blessed not to go through what they experiencing......Glad you're safe.....

Re: Lss3
I like that a lot

I’ve been doing a bit of sheet metal work, filling the fire wall and removing the tailgate chains.

Re: Lss3
Nice...that little block is tough to remove...I removed my chains and modified that area also....I'm always curious how you will finish it off.....Looks like your tig welding...nice

My belated Christmas present finally arrived. More details to come.

Re: Lss3
Progress report?
Subscribed when you started - real nice build and great story. Plan, design and execution all look excellent. Did you ever finalize the battery relocation? Good luck going forward. |
Re: Lss3

I’ve made a little progress, but not nearly enough considering how much time has passed. The battery mount has progressed. It is a bit different than my earlier plans.
|
Re: Lss3
Thanks for the follow up - and nice photo's.
Crazy ingenuity and workmanship on the battery mount. Stepsides don't have quite the under body mount mount options as a fleetsides. Did you position it where you did because of the long wire run or for ease of access or both? I'm thinking about behind the passenger seat with a Blazer flip seat base. |
Re: Lss3
I liked the weight distribution better putting it under the passenger stepside fender. There was plenty of room, but it was going to be a challenge running the cable. With the battery in the front location, using 1/0 cable, there shouldn't be appreciable voltage drop. It is also easy to get it in and out.

Re: Lss3
...and you cleaned up the engine bay - looks better, plus more air flow and intake options.

Our family has a tough time last week. We lost our beloved friend Rocky.
I have made a bit of progress on the circuit breaker panel. It’s a bit overkill. |
Re: Lss3
Sorry to hear.....
|
Re: Lss3
So sorry for your loss. I have been following your build and really like it.
|
Re: Lss3
So sorry to hear about Rocky! I lost my dog last Monday and it sucks.

Re: Lss3
Thanks for all the kind words.

Re: Lss3

Here’s an update on some of my electrical work. The LS3 relay box is a challenge to safely mount. After seeing someone using a sheet metal bracket that attaches to the features on the lower box, I decided to machine something similar out of aluminum. This will allow the box to be bolted to the electrical panel shown previously. The panel will also hold the ECU.

Re: Lss3
Great attention to detail on this truck.
Where did you get your powder coating done? Looking to get a frame done around Santa Rosa. |
Re: Lss3
I had it done by Miller Powder Coating in Rohnert Park. http://www.gompc.com/automotive.html
They did very nice work. |
Re: Lss3

The circuit breaker panel got some updates. The LS3 computer is mounted on some custom standoffs so the fuel pump controller and relays can mount below it. The relay box has also been attached.

Couple questions on your trans/shifter if I may... Can you share the model of your Core Shifter? Can you tell me how tall your handle is? Your install looks great. Is there a reason you chose not to use the mid-mount for the shifter? Thanks, Craig |
Re: Lss3
The Core shifter base is the Core / Hurst Shifter Base: Tremec T56 Magnum aftermarket Option D for 12"+ stick length. The website is https://core-shifters.com/collection...31458433892470 . This base angles the stick 14 degrees to the drivers side. The Hurst shifter is the 238 0085 that is 14 inches long. My earlier post shows a dimensioned drawing. I chose the mid mount location with the stock shifter base and my custom made stick. I assumed that stick would be used with the Core base, but it put it in the wrong position. The Hurst stick was perfect.

I'm planning to use the most forward shifter location ('inspection cover' location) on the Magnum (again, not mocked up yet). Is there a reason you didn't use that location? Craig |
Re: Lss3
It was the natural evolution from originally using the stock base. It also made the angles work out better. If you use the same stick as I in the front mount, you will have to reach a lot further to get it into the odd gears. I think it will be less comfortable.

A belated Christmas present just showed up from Mar K. The tailgate does not have provisions for chains. Although the original one is in pretty good shape, this one will save me a bunch of patching. I will be installing the hidden latches and links soon. I also got the template for painting the letters and some crossmembers.
|
Re: Lss3
nice build so far!

Re: Lss3

I installed the Mar-K hidden latches. Drilling all the holes and cutting the slots was tricky. I made a wooded jig to position the 5/8” hole. I didn’t want the hole saw to wander. A couple of wedges and a C clamp held the jig in place.

Re: Lss3

More work on the circuit breaker panel. I made a cover out of Delrin to protect the copper bus bar. I didn’t want a tool to be able to short the battery to ground.
|
Re: Lss3
Just saw this build, 5 months since the last post, time for an update!!
|
Re: Lss3
You are absolutely right that I should do an update, but I haven't accomplished much lately. My goal is to get the electrical panel installed and the wiring hooked back up so I can start it again. Wish me luck.

Re: Lss3

For three Christmases in a row, I have gotten parts for the bed. First were new bed sides. The next year was the tailgate. This year I got wheel tubs from DAN CARPENTER'S SPECIALTIES. My wheels just barely fit without the tubs. They might rub going around corners. There would be no room for larger wheels without the addition of the tubs. The time to add tubs is before paint.
