Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build

We are going to take a little detour on the build and do something that might garner a little attention.

We are going to rip the wiring out of the other 65 GMC and re-wire it with an American Auto Wire 20 circuit harness. we are also going to pull the bed off, widen and raise the wheel tubs as well as install our own c-notch and pan hard bar.

So here is a little You Tube of Greg's truck before we tear into mine.

Saying hello from the Multimedia Garage.

So I finally decided on a set of wheels and chose Coys C5's. I do like them a lot, updated old school look. We thew them on just to put a little bling on her before the cab comes back off to do the firewall.

Been away for a bit but Greg and I have been working.

The new floor and rockers are welded in and we have an interference issue with the 4L80E transmission and the stock floor transmission hump. So we need to raise and re-contour for clearance.

simple really,

cut it and stick a block of wood on top of the transmission.

Attachment 1791030

bend up a filler piece out of some 16 guage.

Attachment 1791032

weld it in.

So we need to pull the cab off the chassis and pull the chassis off the build table. Then mount the cab to the build table to start fabricating the fire wall.

lay out the panel out of heavy card stock

now the card is roughed so get the cab situated on the end of the table. we built mounts so it is square and level.

See.

Firewall looks great. Have you ever tried the 'Direct Sheet metal' firewall for these trucks yet?

too many holes and it won't clear the valve covers on the big block.

Holes?

It does look like a small block opening though.

Sorry I was thinking of a different one, yes that is decent however we wanted to go all the way to the floor line and our transmission tunnel will need to tweak the heck out of that design.

Fabrication work like this is very time consuming and for those that have not done it they don't fully understand how long it takes. Looking great

Cleko's holding it in final position and Greg has trimmed it to fit.

Need to build the master cylinders bay for the Wilwood racing twins and finish the transmission tunnel and we are done.

I have so much respect for the people that just build sheet metal from scratch. We flat suck at it. However we are really stubborn and have no problem throwing away weeks worth of work and starting over.

Due to the very tight conditions and the fact we have re invented the wheel so often on this build it comes as no surprise when bad planning and over estimation of our talents put us behind the proverbial 8 ball.

I am talking about the master cylinders (Yep plural as we are running twins) and the steering column are fighting for their respective homes.

Here are a few pictures to show our pain.

went from this where it was fitted and tacked up
Attachment 1807912

To this where final welding and grinding gets us close enough to where it can be filled and painted.

Attachment 1807913

this is the well for the master cylinders

This shows where we will be punching the steering column through.

Absolutely. It is a major undertaking to do stuff like that. It is also the most rewarding when you have a one off piece of work.

So when you fabbed the firewall, did you expect to shift the motor backwards and have to fab around it?

Otherwise, I continue to look in awe at all of your work.

It is already moved back. We built the chassis around that spec. :metal:

So many things dictate the design and shape of the firewall. The floor around the throttle and below the brake peddle, as well as the height of the transmission. All told for something that looks so simple it can be a real head scratcher.

sixty4bigwindow 08-06-2018 05:36 PM

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build

Oh ok. I couldn't tell if the motor movement was a necessity because of the firewall or was planned. It looks beautiful. I still can't get over how good your metal work looks.

The cab is back on the rotisserie. We are now moving forward on the finalization of the interior. Greg has decided to go with a Vintage Air system for the creature comforts. We will need to create our own lower dash for the ducts.

Stay tuned

Thank you for following our progress.

The lack of interest in our build was surprising. We will post up when we get something done that might interest folks around here.

I have noticed over the last few years that a lot of people have went to social media to keep up with projects. I don't have any SM so I still hang around here. A lot of people view threads and not reply. Reguardless of a forum foot traffic you guys are doing great work. When it's finished and going to shows is when it will really pay off.

We DO appreciate any and all feedback, we also realize that most of the people who would appreciate our work are busy doing their own 😉
