I'm getting pretty well along on the lean-to. I finally have the ends put up. I need to find some overhead doors for it and I have a few other small things to do yet but I am starting to put parts in it. It won't all fit but if I plan it right I will be able to get quite a bit under roof. I have a lot of stuff...:( LockDoc |

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
You sure have been doing a lot of work not on your truck. I've wondered how were you doing with this project and I see quite well. It's more than just building, moving all your stuff is quite a job... ask me how I know

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
[QUOTE=special-K;8820409]That would be nice, but apparently I don't need one. At least not for what I've done in the last 34 years around my place. Nothing hand tools and me couldn't do. In the case of this project, there was no other way to do it without tearing up my yard. I had backfilled and seeded ahead of pouring the concrete to assure I had grass established before the dormant season so it wouldn't be a mudhole through winter and look like things had always been that way come spring. The project was also about anti-heave protection for the garage wall, so had to get it buttoned up. I did the concrete to look old and home made, same as I did the garage. The walk has a less than precision 'v' to drain water down the center. It's what I call farmer style... at least that's my excuse for the sloppy work
I had also pulled up walking stones at the back of my house leading up to my back door so I could raise the grade some. In heavy rain it always puddled in one area. It was a nuisance for walking to the door, which I mostly enter through, but I also suspect that was contributing to adding moisture in my cellar. It never seemed like a good time because I knew I'd have to deal with a muddy area right where I enter my house. But since I was doing the other grading/seeding, had time free from work, and it had come to the end of the growing season, I went for it. I created a slight gully to direct the water out and around the corner of the house and down along the side where I already had a slight gully for drainage. I have good grass growing there now too Tim ,,do you remember way back when we agreed that we sure could of had fun working together as a team doing odd jobs for the people and not for a company ..? all you are doing there at your place is excactly what I was talking about .. it's just so rewarding of designing a project that fits what is already there compared to new building ,, My most rewarding fun to design job was for a lady that I supervised and worked building a log house , Gabriel Barn with living quarters , and other buildings .. not sure is this it the place to show photos and tell about it ..but it sure was a fun job .. |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I remember, and I agree we could be good together doing work that way. Sometimes perfect and fancy doesn't fit. I'll do it whatever way, but to me an old place showing it's age or a rustic place looking rustic is just right. Being in good condition and functioning as it should is what matters. I'm doing historic preservation work now. I hired on with a company just this week after 38 years of self-employment. I hope it works out

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Well, this afternoon I put a gate between two big trees in the electric fence on the east side of our original property. Then I chainsawed out a few junipers to make a rough trail into the place we bought next door, so it's possible to drive a pickup/jeep between the properties without going out on the county road.
Edit: yesterday then just for fun I took the 89 pickup through the new trail and down to the county road and then back up our driveway. Surprisingly I managed to make those tight turns through the trees without backing up! Today the wind is blowing about 40 mph so I guess I won't do much out in the woods. |

I don't think a lot of people check out alternate tinkerings.
I keep plugging along on the 28x52 shop. Up to 15 months now. I guess I've set my new goal to anything under 2 years  |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I'd say you're doing just fine. That's how it goes when you do it yourself while working a full-time job, out of pocket, do it right, and do it nice. Too bad I can't drop my long walkboards off for you to use to run that siding. Those combined with ladder jacks would make quick work off those side walls, pump jacks for the gable ends. I have a 30', 24', 20', 18', and a couple that stretch out, 8'-14+' and 10'-17+'. For that matter, too bad you're too far for me to come by and help you play with that.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Heck mine took a long time and someone other than me assembled it. The wiring and finish work took a long time for me. Like all other stuff, any progress going forward is good. She is looking good Jesse.

Yesterday worked on the Hawk finished up the water pump no pictures . But came home from mom's and picked apples with the misses. This is from one tree we have 8 that are producing and two that I planted 2 falls ago . Lots of pies and apple butter this year last year was dismal. Had more rain and I pruned the trees over the winter. The apple lose the leaves first these two are in my front yard still loaded with apples .Tress are just about at peek fall foliage

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
How do you like them apples? The leaves are peaking up home and I wanted to go up this weekend. But I am squeezing in a job over the weekend now... not my preference. One week will roll into the other now, get little done at my place, and certainly no get outta town r & r. Wah! :whine: Where's that fiddle icon?
I did get the sidewalk behind my single garage formed, prepped, poured, stripped, graded, and seeded this week. Now the rain begins as I type this. So that's a little something anyway. |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Picking the apples this weekend. Made a deal to barder apples with a nieghbor, hes going to mill a few tree trunks I have that I set aside for lumber. Two hickory a red oak and red maple.
I have an Alaskan mill and a 395xp husqvarna but it's time consuming and it's not all that fun breathing in two stroke all day |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Primed and painted the wall where my new gate latch is mounted. I made a new gate, and the new post isn't really a 2" X 4" like the last one was- it was rough sawn, and this one is just a stick from Lowe's. I could have looked around more for a bigger one, but that's a waste of gasoline when I can just touch up the paint. It's hot out there! It was 80º at 6AM. It was 76º in the house! The Santa Ana winds are kicking up, so some meathead is going to go start some fires. :(

Anyone tried an apple press to make cider? I'd like to give that a try someday.

I built a really nice cider press. I don't have any pictures of it on here. It has an electric motor on it to grind the apples up and an old screw jack for the press. I still quarter big apples and halve the small ones. It will make a lot of cider in short order. It is on the order of this one. LockDoc |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Thanks guys. I’m lucky to have two neighboring orchards. In fact, I just returned now from a walk to one of them to get another pumpkin as ours didn’t grow that large this season. I’ll try my luck at a cider press once my daughter gets a little older. That seems like a fun project to do with her.

Sold some items at local flea market first thing. Changed oil and rotated tires on my 4Runner. Ate lunch with my daughter who’s home from school. Started working on a table for my wife’s room at school. Cleaned up two sets of weathertech floor liners I’ll be selling.
Hope to wash and clean up some rigs tomorrow |

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I spent the weekend doing the thing I hate the most. Painting inside on a beautiful day.
3 scaffolds high a couple of 16' planks and 2 sheets of plywood with a 6' step ladder on top and I was able to reach the top of my foyer. I also had to change the circle top window which blew a seal and was all fogged up. 16 years old with a warranty that paid 50% after 15 years. All they supplied was the glass. I had to hack it out of the frame and replace. Giant pain in the a$$. It cost me $1650.00 |

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
All I did was put the battery charger on my Jeep. I'm moving it to my other place. I have room in the garage now since I sold my Mustang. It's better to be over there since that place has a dirt road and I want to keep the ragtop out of the sun.
I wanted to move my Cadillac over there. But it's as long as a football field. It won't fit in the garage. The Jeep just makes more sense. My wife want's to take the Jeep and go shooting this weekend and there's a place over there by the house. So I think it will work out well. Have some fun and do a little off roading. Give the old girl a workout. Oh... And drive the Jeep too. :) |

Shoveled snow today. Needed the workout. Predicting 4-7 inches tomorrow. Great. Time to get the plow on the Jeep. I swapped in a LS6 some time ago so I don't need low range any more. Pic of pushing snow with the Jeep.

As for that snow above... well you can keep that. It was sunny and 81 today, it’s been mid 70’s to low 80’s since Early sept. That’s my kind of fall. I ran a couple miles with Momma after work and had dinner and a movie with my wife and kids... spaghetti and Hocus Pocus. Not too bad of a nite. |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Snowing again today here, and blowing too so all the porches fill up with snow.

Made a 2 liter starter for the coffee chocolate stout . Going to pitch yeast at 70 degrees and put it on the stir plate for 24 hours

Yeast is pitched and the stir plate is stirring . The reason for this is to take a 5 gallon yeast culture to 15 gallon about 650 billion more yeast cells. Yeast from the package about 300 billion

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Applied Boiled Linseed Oil to finish the white cedar rocking chair my wife bought. That's the last piece. She bought two coffee tables, two regular chairs and a glider, as well. I'm liking how the sun and the BLO have turned the color of the wood. I'll get pics at some point. I don't really understand why we have this Paddy O'Furniture, since we don't sit out there in the back yard, anyway. It's either hotter than hell's braze hinges or too cold, by her claim.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
More snow shoveling ...
Was a project to get the 4runner out of the garage to go feed/water the horses. If I don't keep the apron clear then it packs down and pretty soon you can't get in/out of the garage without hitting the top. Taking a break right now but I still have to shovel the deck and a path to the wood pile, and it is still snowing. Will have to clear the drive again this evening to get out to the barn again. Fun driving in the snow however ;) I had to put the Toy in 4wd just to go down the driveway without sliding the front wheels all the time. Dang automatic transmissions :( |
