In certain situations it almost looks like I was going for a tail dragger look - something I REALLY don't want in my dream truck.

It looks good ... but it does looks like the springs have settled since the early picture.
It couldn’t hurt to raise it a bit to bring it back to where it was when new.

How’s the puppy?

OK, since Dan hasn't said anything I will. Dan is in the running for Truck of the Month. He's currently in 2nd place. If you haven't voted go to this thread and vote for Number 5. Dan deserves this win...Jim

Very nice of you, Jim.

But Jim is in this race too. Vote for him! His truck is to die for beautiful and he did all the work himself. Anyway, thank you again for the thoughtfulness. I hope you and yours had a safe and happy thanksgiving. Best, Dan

Ha! Thanks. I hadn't been back to this thread in a long while.

Just a short update that life got in the way and I basically haven't driven my truck at all since it came home from the shop. Probably not 50 miles total!! Short version is we moved after 20 years in the Pasadena house. I am now Dan in Glendora but can't change my name here.

The truck was in a detached garage at the end of a 100 ft. long single file driveway behind a gate and an RV that had to be moved every time I wanted to drive it. It'll get driven a lot more now! Pics eventually when I get the truck here and the garage cleaned up. For those not from SoCal we are only about 14 miles east of where we were but a larger newer house. Best, Dan

Thanks Jim! Sorry for the delay in responding, things have been a bit crazy with moving, etc amid the pandemic lock down.

She is spending her first night in her new home. I've always wanted a cool looking garage for my dream truck. I'm 65 and this is likely my last house until I am in an old folk's home - hopefully a loog time from now! So if not this garage, when? This will be the one...eventually.

Paint, new floor - epoxy or VCT or RaceDeck, haven't decided. Don't really think I need a 60 gallon vertical compressor anymore, maybe something smaller. Put in a sink, hose reel. Going to erect a shed so all yard equipment, Christmas decorations, luggage, etc will NOT be in the garage. Probably be months before I get to it but I'll post pics here and also at GJ.

Ata boy Dan congratulations on the new house and a great garage for the truck.

Race Deck is my vote . It goes down fast and lasts forever, comes in many styles, colors, sizes and finishes.

My Race Deck partially installed .
These are the drain through type .

To clean I just vacuum up the grit that drops through after the rainy season .

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

How much noise does the Race Deck make just walking on it? I understand if you put geo fabric under it’s supposed to quiet it.

Since I’m in sunny Southern California there’s no need for the flow through type but I do have a bit of concern over it expanding in the heat of summer and buckling. I assume(?) the fix for this is leaving a gap at the walls of maybe 1/4”? Then covering that with some kind of baseboard. Anyone have an opinion on this concern?

Congrats on the move Dan! I can really relate to the new garage! My first house had a good size shop ~1000sq ft but I sold that in the late 80's and have only had a single car garage to work in until we moved just a couple months ago!

I'm still setting up my shop (while I work in it!) but one thing I like is it has an epoxy painted floor. It's not the shiny poured epoxy just paint but it seems durable and everything cleans up easy. Although they look great one of my concerns about VCT or Race Deck tile is how easy is it when you want to sweep up? I can tell you that the painted floor is a breeze!

The single best thing I've done to the shop so far is put in LED lighting. Quiet and bright! I plan to properly do my shop after I finish the chassis and the body/paint work on my truck. It'll constantly be a mess until then lol

You guys should take a look at the garages Matt at Obsessed Garage consults on. He's on youtube and other social media platforms.

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Dan the Race Deck is a stable product , it doesn't expand or contract .
It doesn't move under load even turning the wheels and supports 80,000 pounds .
The flow through doesn't make any noise when you walk on it .
I use it in other garage in the area where the tires roll and use the solid non shinny in areas everywhere else .
Except the area under the Airstream I used the shinny and slippery ones there so I could lay on the floor and slide under it . But it's slippery when wet .
The solid ones do make a slight hollow sound when walking on them.

When I installed them in the Airstream garage I cut them to fit around the feet of the lift in there.

I strongly recommend Race Deck . Call them and have them send you a sample of the flow through and solid .

I like my Racedeck but epoxy coating would have been my preference. Cost wise it's probably a wash, the nice thing about Racedeck is it only took an afternoon to install. Epoxy takes days due to the amount of prep work.

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

one shop I worked at had a special coating on the floor. it lasted a couple of minutes if brake fluid was spilled. it was also really slippery when wet like after a car wash or if the incoming vehicle had snow on the tires.....of course some of us DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE SNOW THING!!!
just saying, ask questions before you spend. I can remember a shriek from one of the guys in the shop when he came wheeling into the wash bay and slid right into the big spendy pressure washer because he couldn't stop due to slippery floor.

blacksheep, that is a SICK looking shop. awesome.
mine is a huge mess right now. body work. parts everywhere with dust on everything.
just installed a couple of 4 ft replacement led tubes and swapped out the old fluorescents. can't believe the difference in light.

That sounds like my garage up until a couple years ago. When the truck went to paint I gave it a beauty makeover. We like to entertain and are known for our kick ass garage parties so my wife agreed to a reasonable budget. I mudded and taped the drywall, primed, painted and did the Racedeck flooring. I got matching cabinets from U-Line and painted up my 35 year old toolbox to match. It's really a nice space to hang out in...

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Mark,
Is epoxy as your preference something you decided after the fact? If not, did you install RaceDeck just to avoid the days of prep & application time?

Has your RaceDeck been noisy? Did you put geo fabric under it or just place it directly on the concrete?

Not directly related but this city - Glendora - has THE rockiest soil. People call the rocks, "Glendora potatoes". I spent hours digging out a 4x4, 2 feet deep hole to plant a 24" boxed avocado tree yesterday & today. Some of the rocks were as big as my head! A total b!tch of a job down on hands and knees. Yeah, it was in the 90's but still. It has me re-thinking if I'd even want to do the RaceDeck OR the VCT! I can tell you for certain I am never planting anything big here again!

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Dan I wanted to have the floors epoxied before we moved in, but it was too cold at the time. When I finally got around to doing something after15 years of use, it was easier and quicker to do the Racedeck. I put it down directly on the concrete. Footsteps are louder when you walk on it, but it's not objectionable.

So Mark, because I’ve liked your taste in what you’ve done with your car & truck if you were just telling me to do one or the other you’d say do epoxy?

I’ve got to get an estimate for pro epoxy and a one for RD but if they’re similar and there’s no issue with moisture on my slab it’ll be a toss up.

Black_Sheep 04-27-2020 07:12 PM

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Time was the primary consideration. Given the option, I'd do epoxy...

I get a case of garage envy when I look at your garage, BlackSheep. I have a two car garage and it seemed plenty big when I bought my house, but with a car and my truck in it, along with tools and jacks it doesn't have much working room.

Dan in Pasadena 05-13-2020 11:48 PM

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Just to follow up about flooring - I've ordered True Lock HD Extreme ribbed ("for my pleasure" apparently? lol) floor tiles in Alloy, Red and Graphite.

Pro epoxy was going to be too expensive - too many other nice things I want to spend money on in the garage! I'm sure I can do the job myself but honestly, I didn't want to take the time to rent a concrete grinder, worry I'd done it right, worry about pot time on the epoxy, spreading chips evenly, etc.

I'm too impatient and I want my cool looking garage to be - if not "done" - at least looking a LOT better soon.

Today I started patching some rock pockets in the small stem walls - naturally they're ONLY visible on the wall you see most - and I'll paint it flat black. I started cutting in what I thought was a light gray - but it's too dark. A gallon of straight white and a five gallon bucket will solve this problem tomorrow. More pictures coming eventually. Feel free to comment.

Damn,Something about a "missing security token" won't let me upload photos. I'll try again later

Products used/to be used:

LOTS of Sika and Sika Flex products used in all my years working for Metro on Light Rail projects so why not at home? I was a little leery of anything ready-made from Home Depot but it REALLY is an easy to use and good product!

And last, my failed attempt at cutting in "light" gray. Cut with another gallon of plain white it SHOULD be plenty light...I hope....or the gallon of custom mix gray is a waste. It looked plenty light in the store!!

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window

Maybe do the back wall dark gray, then add more white before doing the other walls. No matter what you choose to do, I know it will look great.

Boy, is THIS ^^^ ever true! I purged a full pickup truck bed and trailer of crap AND assorted projects I never got around to and STILL have too much stuff to bring. I've decided to make the garage look like I want with whatever fits and then hold a garage sale. Engine hoists, concrete mixers and dozens of partially full paint and chemical containers need not apply!

Anyway, a small truck detail: I finally got around to ordering a center console from Cupholders.com. They send swatches and I'm actually impressed the color (at least in my case) matches pretty well. This is the tall truck console. Top opens sideways toward the driver. About $125 delivered.

Sorry for the lousy cell phone picture.

EDIT! SEE BELOW, Bob fixed the picture.
