Decided to start welding on the fenders. They are a lot easier than the bedsides. http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/DSC03628.jpg I used a Lincoln 135 gas welder that Shannon brought over. It welded really nice. http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/DSC03630.jpg After welding http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/DSC03629.jpg Grinding the bulk of the weld with a 3M 1991 stone. http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/DSC03633.jpg After final grind with a 3" roloc http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...s/DSC03634.jpg |
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
That looks good on the fenders. I did that to mine that last time it was painted. I thought that it really looked much better after it was done.
I wish I was home to work on mine, the weather back home has been in the 70's. I have been over in Austria and Italy since the 15th for work. It is about 10:40 am here and it is 3:40 am back home... You're getting closer to completion.!! |
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
I dont remember ever seeing a inner fender to frame seal.
those ones you have pictured attach to the rear fender brace inbetween it and the cab. they help hold water and dirt in there so your brace can rust out:lol: -just kidding- I seem to remember them being attached to a seperate piece of metal , I will see if I have one off and get a pic for you. |

I think you are missing these:
they are what the flat rubber staples to. |
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Does anyone make those braces that hold the fender to cab rubbers? Mine are gone and want to stop the dirt and rocks from hitting my door.
Thanks Aaron |
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Alan, those inner fender seals do not hang down, the seal slips on to the contact edge of the inners that make contact with the firewall, I don't have any good pics, but before I tore mine down you could see the seals pushing out from time.

I tell you what, sir... I've read all 116 pages of this build and it has been a real inspiration to my personal build. (1965 lwb). I'm sure mine, or I know mine, wont turn out anywhere near as good as yours but an inspiration none the less...Great build and great color, mine will be orange as well.

A little progress last night. Finished up the other fender and started welding on the GMC hood. It was hard to get started on it. It's a really nice hood. There's no turning back now. I started weldeding about a 1" at a time, but it warped a tad bit. I back my welds down to 1/2". It will also depend on how hot your welder is. This was a 110 welder. First I cleaned the gap of all paint or at least as much as I could. I'm almost 1/2 way done with it now. |
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
It's hard to have patience. Take your time. I was already going to do the same thing. Glad your doing it first so I can learn from your mistakes. Not that you make any.

Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Alan -You are an inspiration. And you still have some hair
But the closer I get to starting the body work on the 64 , the more worried I get. It has been over 20 years since I last spread Bondo, and I know things and products have improved since "back in the day". Do you have any suggestions or books to re-learn body work and especially metal preparation using the new products? I know the old skills will come back, but I would kinda like to avoid screwin things up if possible. Bubba |

Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Okay Alan Question Time!! I remember you prefer Evercoat Rage.. What is the difference between the Rage, Rage gold and Xtreme and Quantam and Z-grip ? What is the best one to use and how do you choose?? Back in the day Bondo was the only choice.

Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Yes Alan you did . Other searchs around the internet show lots of guys prefer Gold for the heavier and vertical work and extreme for the finish work and spot putty/Glaze. Summer Heat is not an issue right now , It is way below freezing here tonight . I will wait until warmer days before starting the body work.
I think I will start with the Gold since a lot will end up on the floor. Thanks again Alan |
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Hey guys, I had just asked the same questions about a month ago. After I went down to carquest and saw the price of the rage filler for 60 dollars, I instead bought the 3M body filler for 30 dollars. Im no body man plus im not building a show truck, only a weekend cruiser. I have used it a few times so far and seems to spread pretty good with no pinholes. If anyone has had any issues with this filler please let me know, thanks. Thats my .02

Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Here's a pic of the guru at work. I knew how to remove paint by sanding it, but apparently Alan prefers the "set a fire to it and remove it method".

Re: Project Vitamin C-10
:lol: I use the same method to get rid of bondo.
|
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
I used the same method (sorta of...a welder) to get rid of 6 inches of hair:uhmk::banghead::dohh:

Re: Project Vitamin C-10
I've been working on a '65 c10 lwb all winter, doing body work when I can get the garage warm enough..lol. It's coming along pretty well, I guess, I'm waiting for the engine to get back from the builder this week so thats more good progress. Remember ONE THING AT A TIME IS PROGRESS. That saying keeps me going...lol.

Do you know how to create your own build? If you have questions please ask. We all like to see other trucks being worked on. |

Like I can focus on any one thing I have two 64s one GMC and one Chevy then there is two 56s one GMC and one Chevy then a 57 Chevy and a 71 Chevy. That is three two tons, one one and a half ton, and one one ton and they are all dump trucks. You see I not only have many they are big:lol: You can see the 56 here http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...335636&page=17posting #412 it is a work in progress. The 64 GMC is kind of a rust bucket but has pretty much all new drive train I use it to pull a 12 ton equipment trailer and a 14,000 lbs mini excavator around, The 64 Chevy is a just started project, the 71 is the first I started but got put on the back burner in fact I think I am going to pull the dump box off and turn it in to a slammed dually pickup, I have been thinking about using step side fenders and a fleet side box to build a never offered but factory looking dually box. The 57 Chevy and the 56 GMC are pretty much parts trucks that I am ready to remove all useable parts from and scrap the rest to help fund the others. So you think you have PADD:dohh: BTW Keep watching although you have some pretty big shoes to fill and I am not even going to try I will be starting a build thread for my 64 C60 soon I hope:mm: |

Slowing down at work some. Also found out they will be renovating our bodyshop in a few months. That means I need to get it done and out of there before the contractors show up. Blocked some on it today. |

I'm thinking about squaring these edges off what do y'all think. The more I look at it the more I need to do it. Or am I just being anal? Most will not even notice it when looking at it. I've spent a lot of time looking at it while making it and sanding it. Getting it smooth on the lower inner corners where it is attached to the inner bedside is a PITA. |
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
I think it would look cleaner if it was squared off.
|
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Is'nt it covered by the wood? If it is then your way to anal, but do it anyway.
|
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Yeah what Dave said??? Square it off or round it off. Looks like factory the way it is now. Which is good too.

Wiped the front of the fenders and ground the hood. While sanding the fender I noticed I didn't weld all the way around. You'd think as long as I have been doing this it wouldn't happen. Oh well. |
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
Hood looks nice. I'm still sanding on mine.;)
|
Re: Project Vitamin C-10
I thought you already had your hood done? Guess I was wrong..Looking good Alan
