(Finally) got my new bed wood in. I now know that it is NOT as easy as it looks.

Thanks Ray!

The wood is Red Oak. They are all treated with 4 coats of Helmsman Spar Varnish followed by 2 coats of POR-15's Pelucid for further protection.

I ran into a bit of an issue midway through. While "attempting" to install I realized that the forward bolt holes for the frame on the second boards were in the wrong location and had to have a couple of replacement boards made. I needed more Pelucid but apparently POR-15 stopped making it. I ended up using POR-15's Glisten instead. The end product seems to be similar but requires a hardener. Regarding appearance, you can't tell the difference but it'll be interesting to see whether they age differently.

Thanks again!

Tim

* Did the (bleep)er (bleep)ing PO work on a (bleep)(bleep)ed road crew?

* Beer waiting in the fridge.

I actually wrote a song whilst de-tarring but I can't post it here. Outside of tar, PO, and road crew, most of the lyric is expletives. It is however, sung to the melody of, "I've Been Workin' on the Railroad."

Today, I got out the power tools and hacked out the plywood bed.

Priceless. Do you sing it with the band on the weekends?

I was hard to take mine out of commision this weekend because I drive mine alot but was tired of looking out of the cracked & pitted glass so I took the plunge and removed my 58yo glass and seals and started painting the interior and going to replace all the seals and glass, Just going to raddle can it , but found a nice match for the original color,

drove it to dinner! Always draws an admirer or two.
some gal in a brand new 4X4 Chevy crew cab with paper plates stopped and said she thought it looked better than her brand new truck!

Wonder how she would think if she rode with me on the freeway, and couldn't hear the radio at 70 mph.

Just a thought, what I did with my stuff for my truck and my 39 chevy was wax them and I wrapped them in news paper for storage. Some of my truck parts lasted about 16+ yrs and looked great.

Took it out on the highway and put a few more miles on it before putting it away for the winter. Speedometer reads way fast and haven't got the gas gauge working yet otherwise all good.

I brought it home, finally. Looking forward to starting this one. Its a 54 but has a older grill on it. No title (need to get that situated) but remarkably rust free. Will need very little repair to be a solid truck. This will be more of a driver/shop truck build.

Changed the back up circuit wiring so I can also use a switch to turn on the lights and wired the door switches for the courtesy lights. I borrowed Orge's idea for hidden switchs that work off the upper hinge. Also scored a pair of 68-72 4wd front hub caps so I do not have to cut up the 2wd ones.

Picked up my gas tank and radiator from the shop, they cleaned and sealed the tank and boiled out, tested, and repaired the radiator. I might be driving before too much longer.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I finished the chassis paint on my '47 GMC so I can finally bolt down the cab so I can get back to the rot replacement.
This brings up a question for you experts: I rebuilt the rear cab support trunion with a kit that included the bushings for the center trunion and a pair of rubber pads that support the cab corners. The pads were 1/4" thicker than the originals and round instead of rectangular. The old ones mounted with two bolts so I drilled new holes to put them on the center of the frame. I figured that the originals had taken a set or were worn down but when I let down the jack the cab rested on the bumpers and the trunion base was 1/4" off the frame. I made a 1/4 " spacer piece which when bolted in pulled down nice and flush with the pads. Looks good but apparently not correct. The spacing between the frame and the floor is 0.76" in the assembly manual and mine is about two inchs. The rub is that the manual shows the trunions which support the cab at the corners with no pads which was a revised design. The single trunion design put too much stress on the cab and caused cracking. I am not sure if the .76 is valid for a '47 with the old design. I am leaning towards just adding 1/4" shims to the front cab mounts and radiator mounts and probably be OK.
Any suggestions how to proceed.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

proceed with caution. AD cab angle is critical to hood and fender alignment as well as horizontal with the bed. there have been a number of threads about fenders not fitting that go back to the cab angle.

Opened small packages the white and blue truck dropped off. Get to see if the LED backup lights will work ok. Also got the front hub caps, in better shape than I anticipated. Basically snap them on and go.

JJ, What's the timeframe for installation?
Will you install it yourself or have others do it?

Please take pic's (as you usually do) cause that's one job I think a lot of us intend to do eventually and we'll (well, I will be!) searching for info with pictures later. - Dan
