Thursday morning breaks and Steve and I head out for breakfast at Presley's in Jonesboro with a group of his regular friends, including Dick Valenzuela.
Having been speaking to Dennis overnight and early morning, we decided to have breakfast while Dennis climbed on the Battle Wagon to the Dodge dealers who had not yet touched or looked at the car. Suffice it to say he had called the dealers and raised hell and pi$$€d off some people. They would look at the car and call me on Steves phone when they had something to report. So we finished our breakfast and about 6 coffees each (free refills on everything in the USA) and Steve asked me to go off with The Bandit while he went to barber school for his weekly haircut and wet straight razor shave and facial. Yes we later ghee, but I guess a lifetime in the military, even with the latter part as a civilian in various think tanks etc, will make you continue your habits. So Dick and I went off to see Duke at his shop in the Chevy. Again, impressed with the mans car passion Proud papa. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pss1kcsyiq.jpg Duke runs a window tinting business to pay the bills, but is known primarily for his conversions. What struck me most, was just how tidy and orderly his whole shop was. Anyway, it seemed the car would be ready by 12.00 for collection. But before that we popped in at another communal friends shop to take a look at his build..... no photos, but again, complete mind blowing work. All new steel. His main business is RV Services. Saw this beauty out in the yard..... I felt a hand over my mouth and my trousers being yanked down.......... When I offered to pay, Brandee said it had already been settled, she did not seem very interested in me, maybe just busy. Any mechanics out there....? We hit the road after filling the Challenger and buying lots of Jerky, Mountain Dew and other treats. I followed the Red Toyota........ http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psbpzc3f4p.jpg We only stopped once for a toilet break at Cherokee Falls and kept to the speed limit, as the road has its fair share of enforcement officers We came through/around St Louis just in time for the Friday afternoon rush, and except for one surprise junction at which point I was leading with the SatNav, I almost got Steve killed as he came to a halt after my sudden departure onto the i70 in order to follow me, and also then later he left the road to go fill his truck, and we got him later again when he called Hanna on her mobile for directions..... http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pseytsx5az.jpg Phewwwww.... Unpacked, I relaxed for the first time in three days, as it was Dennis' surprise birthday party, which he had still not realised was being organised. He thought all along that everyone was arranging for Debbie's birthday surprise. He had gone and bought them one of her bucket list dreams...... For Saturday morning. Anyone care to guess what it was??? In the mean time everyone was able to prepare for the birthday party of a lifetime, for an amazingly well liked and loved man. Bedtime now. |

Debbie's daughter in law, Katie, her sons Jason and Bryan, Adam and Hanna were all on the go, getting the prep done while both Dennis and Debbie were keeping each other busy for the party later in the day. Starting up Adam's Sprint car on Friday just after I got tgere. Running on pure Methanol it is rather eager. Rumble Rumble... Iver at Lake Ozark Racing track they had three classes. Modified, Late model and Sprint cars. Anyone who knows the sport better, please feel free to elsborate and clarify. Hot laps. I think this is Modified Late Models And the main reason for being there. Sprint car Hot Laps. Fetching and buying more Methanol in the Mule. It does not last long. Sight seeing around the pits with Dennis in the Mule. There is a lot of money out there. Over at Donnies place in Strawberry I recorded a hummingbird in slow motion at the sugar feeder. More clips later. |

Roger Orf, remember him from last years trip? The man likes wide tyres, very wide, and has a few cars with them. He has a picnic or is that garden party for Rodder friends every year, supplying chilli, cooked hams, beer and this year a newly cast concrete strip for friends to come and do burn outs. This is next to his little self built lake. Photographed last year when I went there the first time. This is the sunset view over his self built lake in front of his house. Parked up the Challenger and Steve and I joined in. First worthy spot........ Redneck beer cooler. This was for real. As the night got longer and later, people left to travel where they had come from.

So after all the clearing up got done, Dennis and I jump in the Dually and run down to a "local" estate auction of collectibles.
Truck taken just in case either of us see something. Filled up and Jerky bought just in case we get snowed in, we head out. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psromoptbs.jpg The auction is done by a professional company and fast paced as there are so many individual lots. Some items price silly low, if they are your thing. Like 50's school desks for $3.00 each. But then a six pack vintage Coke cooler hit over $200.00 It puts into perspective the crazy prices we see at car shows in England. Maybe the profit margins are not that big. Signage makes good money, regardless of condition as there are always entry level collectors who just want and need stuff and pay higher prices than the pro's would. When we get there its clear there are some serious buyers who know the inventory. Trucks, many with car trailers fill a very large field. Closer to the actual yard there is a very large catering trailer selling food and drinks and another trailer that is the registration and payment office This is organised. Of course we walk in and it is shoulder to shoulder with punters, some serious, some just out to look. Just when I completed a write up, the iPad deleted the lot. I hate the blooody thing at times. So now photos and less talk. We went for a ride after the kids and grand daughter left. It had Honeysuckle, barbed wire fences grown into trees etc and very unruly red Cedar trees. Use the bucket on the tractor to strip the Honeysuckle followed by pushing it all onto the large Fire pile. Beers replenished, we rode over to a neighbours farm to check out the hunting hides and paths they had created on 200 acres of farming and hunting land.
Despite it being my last night or afternoon in the US, I felt such a strong affiliation with these people, real people, honest people who had taken me into their world. Dennis is the consummate host and friend. During this trip, I had learned more about him and his totally unselfish and generous ways. You would have to go a very long way to meet another quite like him. Thinking this was it. But not Dennis...... Nooooooooo Gary who we met at the auction on Sunday morning had bought a few things. So,after dinner, armed with more beers, in the golf cart, we headed into the sunset, a few miles away. I could never exploit more than a third of its potential.
