Re: What did you do to your truck today?
When I had installed mine back in `93, I had bought mine from LMC, did this in the hot sun so they would soften up, after install, closed doors and left them for a couple of days to take shape to the door and jam, turned out nice, needs to be done again, all wore off the lower kick panel from use..;)

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I went and picked up another hood for my 66. the front brace on mine is rusted through on the passenger side so I thought I could use pieces from both and make one good hood. Turned out to be in pretty good shape and the front brace has no rust so I'm in business. I also picked up an original aluminum front grill for $20 bucks with a few dings, etc. but seems to be totally fixable. I was just wondering what these grills are going for these days? I was thinking they are getting hard to find. Was this a good deal or not? I am also wondering if any of you Portland area guys restore these or no someone that does?
I also prepped and got some primer on the power steering gear I picked up which cleaned up real nice and painted my front bumper brackets and motor mount brackets. This weekend my son and a couple of friends are coming over to help me push the truck out of the garage and turn it abound so I can start on cleaning up and rebuilding the rear suspension, etc. (I've got limited room in my garage) |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Still more scraping and sanding under fenders and frame. Painted the front of the frame and inner fenders (rattle can). This ones not going to be a body off build, just trying to get it to look simi good, then drive it.

That's a great deal on the grill. There is a guy on craigs list that has a 1966 chevy that he is parting out. I talk to him this morning about his grill he is asking $200 Talking about a good deal I ran a add on Portland craigs list for the last 2 months looking for a drivers door for my 66. Sunday a guy called he said that he has one went to look he had both rust free very nice doors. I asked him how much $50 for both made my day. And I gave $25 for a pair of custom cad trim pieces and a pair of turn signal bezels. |

Reinstalled my Gaylord hard cover and gave the truck a real bath for the first time in at least 6 months. It looks pretty nice with all the crud washed off.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Today I went ahead and mounted the bed rails on the Gaylord hard cover. To the casual observer the truck doesn’t really look much different than it did when the bed was open, except now there's a very high gloss surface over the bed. Instead of using oval head screws I opted to use pan head screws with stainless fender washers coming up from underneath, with chrome acorn nuts on top. They have a machined in flat washer on the bottom which nestles perfectly into the tapered hole in the brackets. They also add a little sparkle and go with all the other bullet shaped objects on the truck.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Stripped doors in preparation for interior paint and installation of glass channels and fuzzies.
Also will be installing GMC Paul's 67-72 push on style door weatherstripping. Site member "chewychevy67" used the newer seals and said they worked well. The biggest advantage, from my perspective, is that these new seals are push on and there are no splices at corners. Here is the thread where they are being discussed: GMC paul door seals are great! We'll see how they work on my old war-horse. I kind of like the look without the ventilator... but to me the vents are part of the neat iconic features of these old trucks... they'll be staying.http://inlinethumb59.webshots.com/47...600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb19.webshots.com/46...600x600Q85.jpg |

http://www.gaylordslids.com/showroom/chevy.php Unfortunately they’ve almost doubled in price since I bought mine, but they are frequently available on Craigslist for substantially less. And here is a link to where I bought the bed rails: http://www.customautotrim.com/truck-...ini/Universal/ The version I purchased is called the Bullet Mini-Tube in the 72” length. They are also available in 88” and 96” lengths. Just an fyi - Gaylord advises against attaching any accessories to the cover. I'm assuming they were envisioning wings or luggage racks which could stress the structure beyond its design limits. Also it is my understanding the inner core of the main span is some type of waffle cardboard reinforcement that could be damaged if holes were drilled allowing water into the core. The location where I mounted the rails is completely flat and about 3/16" thick of solid fiberglass. The screws are mounted using 3/4" diameter #10 fender washers underneath, and there is a rubber seal on the bottom of each stand on top. I cut away the weatherstrip under the bed cover directly around each washer so they sit flush against the bottom of the cover, and the weatherstrip is thicker than the height of the screw head so there is no metal to metal contact with the bed. Using 3/14" long #10 screws, when everything is clamped together the screws bottom out in the acorn nut threads just as everything is perfectly tight. So I don't have to worry about overtightening or having the fasteners come lose. |

I had been hoping to find a brand that actually matched the density and profile of the original seals which are a bit smaller than the Chevy Duty version, but so far I haven't found any that are exactly like the originals. |
