Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I used the Juliano's three point retractable along with their attachment kit. It worked pretty good but the instructions were vague with very little details. The drivers side attached to the flat part of the floor on the drivers side. On the passengers side I had to "Open Up" the angle so it would fit the angle of the floor. This allowed the retractable end to mount vertically as it did on the driver"s side.

Got the face for my tach, it was a little big, but I was able to trim it. I think it turned out pretty good considering how little I've spent on these.

I have a few clocks in mind, might go looking this weekend. Would like to get this all done and back in the cab.

I had rebuilt a small scooter with a BIG BORE kit and kept the old parts. I ran across the 50cc piston the other day and thought it would be cool as a suicide knob. The "tractor" knob was in two halfs. I removed the top and shaved down the bottom till it fit inside the piston. There is a small ridge inside the bottom of the piston. I used JB Quik to bond them together.

Here it is.

That gauge cluster looks great.
What gauges did you use?
I have a GMC and the cluser is different but I would switch it out if it looked as good as yours.

All are correct factory guages to include the Tach and refaced Vac gauge.

I purchased most everything off ebay. I used 3 different stock gauge clusters and rebuilt the best parts out of all of them.

The hard parts to find are the Tach, Tach Transmitter and Vac Gauges.

I have a ton of leftover parts that could be restored into everything except the Tach and Vac. Then when you find them you just bolt them right in.

Here are a few Gauge Clusters and a Vac Gauge on ebay now:

I was surfing through the 67-72 website here and found out the Chevy and GMC are not only a different layout, they are also different sizes. I'll have to find a different gage cluster panel and fix it up to hold the gages I want in it.
I am also converting my 63 Chevy to a GMC and that means I'll need to change the Chevy dash to GMC.
Not really a big deal as the Chevy dash is butchered beyond recognition but I'll need to make up my ever changing mind before I weld in a new dash....
Do I REALLY want to convert???:uhmk:

Picked up a Holmes 440 wrecker bed for my 3/4T

Gotta massage it a bit before it fits perfectly, and maybe see how I can shed some weight off of it.

Now I need a PTO, and Manuals.

Installed 2001 Tahoe seats w/ power to take advantage of the 3-point belt. First picture were some cheapy seats I picked up a while ago because the factory bench seat broke. What a difference in comfort too.

I was a tow truck driver for a short while around 1979 and I drove a 70 Chevy with the Holmes 440 on it. It never let me down (other than when I bent the front spoiler of a Cuda on a police impound call, oops).

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

The PO of my truck cut out the steel floor to install airbags and he never did. I took advantage for the last 9 months to install bags, comp, tank, shocks, trackbar, exhaust and other stuff. It was real nice to work on things with the floor missing. Now that all the hard stuff was done, it was time to put the floor back in. It was kinda hacked out of there so you will see missing pieces up front and one small part in the rear. I think that was to fix a bed mount. I added some braces up front to support the bed.

Here is a few pics of the floor install. I will finish more later. I plan to redo the rollon bedliner when all the metal is in.

Oh Happy Day, I picked up the doors from the painters!!! As you can see Art does not believe in short cuts. He made sure the back side of the inner door panels were (although it does not matter to me if there black or silver) He also made sure to straighten out and clean the drain holes at the door bottoms and spray a nice layer of rubberized coating on the interior door bottoms.

Making some more progress on the doors. Installed window seals and finished painting door panels. Once I get some glass setting tape I can re-assemble the windows.

Finally sprayed epoxy primer on the bed - spent way more time setting up than painting (first ever effort with the hvlp gun - too easy!)
Cutting/fitting white oak bed boards is next…

Good job! You did real nice for the first time with an HVLP gun!

Thanks - just like the first welding effort, anticipation was much worse than just doing it. This was just the cheapo primer gun, the real challenge will be color, but that's down the road a bit.

Got my clock square and installed. I didn't like the face plate I made first, so I redid it and got the clock face centered in the hole. Looks good enough for me. Still need to do the bezel and maybe a new lens.

What is that clock out of? Same question on the tach. Both very nice looking; great job.

jimmydean 05-31-2011 11:38 AM

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Thanks. The clock is from a 2001 Chrysler 300M, the tach was in the truck when I bought it, it's made by Orbit(?) and the white face gauge kit I bought came with the stock looking vinyl face. I did have to trim the face and make some mods to the tach to get it to fit, but I think it turned out ok.

So a stock gauge with half sweep tach + about $30 for the clock, paint, and white face gauge kit and done.

<edit> The clock was $2.88 at pick-n-pull during the half price weekend.

Gave the truck a bath yesterday and reset the passenger door. Moved the lower hinge inboard a tad and now the door latches as easily as the driver side. Also rubbed out the rear bumper where I splashed gas on it from siphoning fuel for the lawn mower.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I actually drove my truck Saturday for the first time since July. The aluminum head I had welded up seems to be fine! No coolant leaks! I need to bleed the brakes because I have no pedal at all. I had to do some pumping to stop.

I was just going to go around the block, but I was so excited I ended up riding for about 30 minutes VERY cautiously.

I put almost 600 miles on mine over the weekend. Also picked up a left rear fender from a guy in Columbus GA. Only problem is the shifter started acting up. Made the drive home interesting, shifting from first to third. Ive got to find a way to fix the three on the tree.
