I installed stainless steel kick plates on the exterior man-doors.

I ordered some brush type weather/critter guard material for the headers of the roll-up doors. This should help seal out drafts, dust, birds, and flying insects like crazy June bugs.

Speaking of insects I have a question. How many of you have problems with dirt daubers and how do you keep them in check? Here in North Texas they can be terrible. Not that they’re aggressive or sting, it’s the mess they make. I ask because I was trying to find some kind of screened guard for the PVC piping for my HVAC emergency drip pan drain line, the hot water T&P relief valve drain line, and the vent for the AC condenser line. I know over time these little boogers could/would clog the lines. I only found screened caps used for natural gas and propane vents but thought they were too expensive, and not to mention I would most likely need to modify them for my application. Anyway, I came up with an idea using water line filters, the gasket/screened filter combo for washing machines. I cut some ¼ inch rings from some ¾ inch PVC and used them to sandwich the filter gasket and then put the sandwich into ¾ inch PVC couplers using PVC glue. I call it the Triple D (Dirt Dauber Disabler) – patent pending…..lol. I hope it will work. My luck, the little boogers will build right on the screen.

I like the screen idea. Around here they will build on anything that is out of the rain and direct sunlight. Last summer they discovered my tractor. One in ever blind bolt hole in it. Shop is looking great. Your gonna need a bigger TV.

Thanks Jimmy -

The TV is a left over from days gone by. It should work good for the break area for news/weather stuff.

I know what you mean about those daubers, seems like over night they clog every hole they can on stuff you don't want them to.

If we could just teach them to seal rust holes we would have something.

Been a while since my last update. Spring finally showed up a couple of weeks ago - Yahoo!

Got metal going up under the mezzanine floor and sheet rock in the upstairs area.

Progress is always a good thing - even if it is slow

Looks really good! I like the light over the upstairs door. Reminds me of an old style gas station. Very nice.

So many questions to ask so I'll just go with the ones that keep popping in my head.

Tell us about the gas station islands out front. Also tell us more about the tornado/bomb shelter in the yard

Ahhhh, the gas pump islands. This was actually my wife’s idea. We have a couple of restored pumps and she thought it would be cool to put them out front. I, on the other hand had no intentions of putting them outside. So she suggested finding some old unrestored ones for outside and I really liked the idea. This last minute upgrade to the concrete plans probably frustrated my concrete guy but he did a real good job as everyone that sees them ask if those are for gas pumps. He stops by occasionally and asks where my pumps are. I keep telling him I’ll get them when the prices comes down. Mike and Frank from American Pickers as well as other shows have made people think the old pumps are worth their weight in gold. I just cannot pay what they want for unrestored pumps now. Especially since my restored pumps cost me less years before the “junk shows” began.

The tornado shelter is a 6x8x7 (W,L,H) concrete box we had installed 19 years ago. We bought the property 25 years ago and have officially lived there for 20 years. I grew up in a small town south of Tulsa, Oklahoma and survived the June 8th, 1974 tornado outbreak so I’ve witnessed the power of mother nature first hand. This was a safety investment/insurance that I hoped we would never use. We’ve been in the “hidey hole” 2 times so far and I’m really glad to have had it. So has a neighbor…lol.

Thanks for the questions!

Everything is looking great Wayne.

I agree that Barrett Jackson, Frank, Mike and that Rick guy have all escalated prices on these items. Any thing cool now is out of reach for an average guy it seems. Just keep looking. I bought a 1954 National A64 pump un restored for under $500.00 in restorable condition. It may take some time but you can find these for an affordable price. Get on oldgas.com and you might get lucky there as well.

Take care friend,
Tom
