Thanks for the complements guys. The wheels are American Racing Outlaw I 15''x10''. The tires are Cooper 12.50/33/15. The lift is a factory lift, it came that way from the factory. They install a 8'' block on the rear axle and all spring lift on the front axle. This is the way a 4x4 should be sold from the factory. Unlike Chevy 4x4's sold today, you can't tell if they are a 2wd or 4wd with out placing a 4x4 sticker or emblem designating that.

Hey Gilbert, just wondering if you have had to make any changes to your truck running 33 inch tires. Do they rub at all on anything?

I think it`s awesome! That`s a great plan you have and looks like primo work on the fabbing. There`s a member with a long travel front end,I believe.

I looked at this one yesterday. It`s nice, belongs to a fellow member.Built in California,he sold it when he moved east, then his brother found it on Craigslist for sale...it`s back east now. It`s an original GMC 4wd that he redid using `78 K/20 drivetrain and Chevy grille.I have a rear shot, but I don`t know how to scrub out his tag number.

Her's my '61. Yes it's a real one. All original. Major restoration. I did add a Spicer 2021 Under/overdrive in the overdrive position. It just fits between the the t-221 and the Sm- 420. It'll hit 90 if it has to.
There are some badass rides on here. I know you guys like the big tires, but I like 'em skinny and showroom looking.:)

Finally! I have been checking trhis site out for years. Now I finally got an old chevy of my own. I have a lot of work to do. But someday it will be as nice as some here. It is a 61 on a 78 frame. Not original but I love it. Having pic trouble........

The Suburban is mine and yes it is real. You don't think I would leave it looking like this if slid something newer under it and/or photo shopped it. HA. The crew cab is one that I almost bought last summer.

Re: Post pics. Lets see how many 60-66 4x4 are out there.

question; did these early 60-66 4x4 transfer cases have a low gear on top of the allready "granny gear" in the gear box?
are they the same in chevy and/or GMC?

justcuz 05-18-2010 01:26 PM

Re: Post pics. Lets see how many 60-66 4x4 are out there.

Yes they had a low range. With the low gear in the 4 spd trans and the 1.96 to 1 low range it approximately doubled the low gear ratio. The Rockwell transfer case was used in the Chevy and GMC 4x4's from 1960 to 1966 in the divorced application that you have.

Re: Post pics. Lets see how many 60-66 4x4 are out there.

WOW! my buddy said his dad,as a kid, had the GMC (V-6) 4x4, that would "idle up the walls of the grand canyon" if you pointed it that way.

and i beleve him, cause my 2WD V-6 in 1st gear feels like that now!!

Thanks justcuz

justcuz 05-19-2010 01:27 PM

Re: Post pics. Lets see how many 60-66 4x4 are out there.

Your welcome. The SM420 transmission has one of the lowest first gears of a light truck 4 speed, close to 7.0 to 1. So if you double that plus multiply it by your axle ratio ye get your crawl ratio. 7x2x3.73=52.22 to 1. That is rounded up except the axle ratio which should be 3.73 for a half ton unless it was ordered with something else.

Anything over 40 to 1 is considered pretty good.

Keep in mind the new NP 241 aluminum t-cases have a 2.72 to 1 reduction ratio. So a NP 241 behind your SM420 would net you a 71 to 1 crawl ratio!

K-TEN 05-19-2010 04:17 PM

Re: Post pics. Lets see how many 60-66 4x4 are out there.

Can't speak to the later years, but the 60 and 61 K10's had a 3.90 rear ratio (3.92 at the front-they can't be numerically the same)
So 7x2x3.90 is 54.60
And the K-20's had a 4.56 rear
So 7x2x4.56 is 63.84

justcuz 05-20-2010 04:34 PM

Re: Post pics. Lets see how many 60-66 4x4 are out there.

^ Correct. I forgot that the 1/2 ton gear ratio changed in 1963 when they started installing 12 bolt rear axles. So if you had a corporate HO 33 with a dropout center section in the rear axle it was probably 3.90 and a 12 bolt would have been 3.73.
