LOVELY Car Don !! I guess it is kinda rare in the USA..... they are over here. Martin in popping over on Friday afternoon, as he has to collect his one power drill from a friend up the road from where we live. I think I will be trading him for a cuppa coffee for a tutorial on how to fit my Rev Counter Tim gave me in August. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps103f60be.jpg I did not want to fit it before I had painted the truck, and as the interior is getting a complete repaint, I should not either, but my butt is itching to do it. Think this will look quite neat on the dash in the corner, or somewhere slightly out of the line of direct sight, as the SatNav lives there. Any pics of dash mounted Rev Counters appreciated. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Had another day leave today.
Filled it with all sorts of yard jobs, and went to the farm to see if Charlie had some bits of weathered fire wood for me to make stuff from. Followed that with getting the truck out and doing an inspection....... Came back with a few bits off his firewood pile, and a couple of longer bits of old oak. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psa5375b61.jpg My favorite piece once cleaned up was this former top of a gate post. Not sure if it will become a candle holder, table lamp or possibly a large mantle clock as it is a good 300mm high. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psb3a57e7a.jpg Next up and interesting bit of fire wood. Sanded it and cut the top and bottom so that I could work with it. Belt sander, hand sanded and then mounted inside this old wooden tray, it will be good as a tealight holder on someone's windowsill or a shelf. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdb772390.jpg Next up I made Charlie the farmer (remember the combine harvester last year) a doorstop for the farm house. Handle from some rope I plaited from one piece and thenfed through two sides of the hole I drilled in the lump, and fixed internally in the holes. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps45ef6958.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psb402ffcc.jpg I still have some more pieces to process, but need to think of the best stuff to make to maximize the effect of their scars etc. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
When I bought the truck, I knew it would need a complete resto and repaint to get it looking the way I want it to be.
I originally had a colour change in mind to a traditional mint green and white combo, or a real farmer brown green colour with off white detailing. But within a week of buying the truck, I knew it would stay the "in your face" red that it had been painted 10 years ago before leaving California. I also knew it had some rust, and that is was very little for a 47 year old vehicle. However, I was surprised at the rust when I started looking around under the truck. There are a few holes that will need new metal welded in after surgery, and then some dents and scrapes to fix. All of these I am prepared to give a go, however, I will be buying and importing some steel patch panels. I am happy to hear from anyone who has experience in using the panels that are available in the market from the likes of LMC, Top Banana and others, which are best for quality and fit. Below are a few pics of my fenders and also the front, bottom corners of both doors. Passenger door underside. The fender on this side seems fairly intact, but I may just bite the bullet and replace that whole side while on the metal work and paint. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps87495d1c.jpg Driver side fender corner...... this is bad, it is loose, and the inner support is rotten as well. I suspect you could pull the whole bottom off without much effort. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps672d3740.jpg Inside view...... made me want to cry. I will get the whole support for this side, rather than patching it up. The passenger side seems totally solid. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0360b91d.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps15d52c6e.jpg Drivers side lower door front corner. I am happy to make up path panels for the two doors as they are out of sight. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps552d4bf3.jpg As mentioned above, please do add any comments and advice you may have for me regarding repairing the rust. The trucks sills and cab corners are completely solid, and there are small bits of rust on the inner fenders just behind the grille and front support. As can be seen in this pic. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psd7065f91.jpg ==================================================================================================== ====== The other thing I looked at today was the placement of the rev counter my buddy Tim gave me in August. I did not want to fit it till the truck was painted, but realized that placing it and wiring it up will not stop me from the paint and prep. I plan on going for a satin black dash, or satin black and red combo. My question is this...... Where do most people place rev counters? Sensible, practical, visible etc..... Here is mine, just held in place or placed in position to get and idea. Opinions, advice ?? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps223e0a5d.jpg Somewhere in the left hand corner. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps1bff2d57.jpg Over to the right ?? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4e75e20a.jpg Looking forward to ideas etc.... Thanks, Rian. |

I would put the tach on the column but that's just me. Mine was mounted this way before I tore it apart and I have my Caprice that way as well.
http://images15.fotki.com/v588/photo...SCN4925-vi.jpg As for the patch panels I bought all my stuff from Top Banana and other than a little bit of tweaking it fits great. Bret |

I paid sensibly silly money for it at a bootfair last year and still need to clean and polish it (winter job) then it will go into my office or the garage as wall art. Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
I mounted my tach on top of the dash, because it was the most popular location back in the 60’s:
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/5246/ygyo.jpg The story was having the tach mounted line of site would keep your eyes on the tach and the drag race starter at the same time. The reality is the main reason it was put on the dash was to show off that you had one. Everyone else put there’s on the steering column, and I’ve had some mounted there as well: http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/3972/vzww.jpg Back in high school I mounted one in the upper left corner of the windshield just because I thought it looked cool. http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4425/30wk.jpg |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Thanks Don. ;)
Fish and chips for dinner, then a long evening discussion of cars, bikes and trucks with Martin who came over...... We also Skype called Ta2Don in Arkansas to share our dinners with him, followed by a lengthy Skype Mobile chat with Kieth in Tulsa to discuss the merits of cutting the BBW metalwork out of a cab and mailing it to the UK, as Martin has Big Back Window envy and desperately wants to convert his truck to BBW. Just when I thought it was safe and he was going home, he started to challenge me about what I will be doing with the rust on my truck, which panels to buy etc. "Come lets go see your cab corners, they must be rotten" he said, "Not at all" said I..... famous last words. In the end we went down to the garage just after 22.00 to spend another hour there. This is always time well spent of course. Garage time with Buddies. Cab corners were fine (told you so) as were the sills and a variety of other parts of the sheet metal. I also started poking into the passenger fender inner mount..... OOOPPS.... rust, but repairable. If I could find a complete 66 passenger door, I would be happy to fit it, but as it is realistically not going to happen, the solution will be to cut and weld plate in on the door bottom, or to order in a patch panel. Then we dug out some Blue Dots I wanted to give to Martin for his tail lights, as I had a spare pair, bought years ago. I will be fitting a pair to my tail lights later. At this point Martin discovered my MGA Grille and also the World War 2 Ambulance spotlight I bought for a lucky 50p at a bootfair this year, and offered it up to the Drivers side A-Pillar..... PERFECT FIT !! And the door still opens. So Martin has now created even more havoc in my life, as I quite like the look. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8b4a8763.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps6676efb8.jpg Laughing like a mad man, as he knew he was creating havoc in my mind. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps77faf2b6.jpg Opinions ??? I do believe that in the UK, I would get away with them being fitted. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Thanks to Martin putting ideas in my head, I spent quite a few hours today with this view.
The view did actually make me smile a few times, looking at the woodwork shed, and thinking I was really lucky to have a wife who has encouraged me to create these spaces where I can work and play. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psabfa6fe4.jpg Next up I completely dismantled the search light and started to polish the bits. Being rather old meant that the degeneration and much stuck to it is quite significant. I started polishing by hand but after about 45 minutes realized this was going to be a machine job. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps25b340c8.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3f431d7c.jpg Just this bezel ring took well over an hour, and had me using my favourite bad words. Now you could see the before and after difference. At this point I did wonder why I had even started this or why I would want to finish the job. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps7fcf66d7.jpg Unfortunately the buffer is quite small, and easily stopped by pressure from the work piece, so it was slowly slowly... http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4a3421db.jpg Quite a lot of pitting, but I will look for a decent wax polish. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3dfeb780.jpg And the under side. The rest will get polished tomorrow or the next day, and then reassembled. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse2827d78.jpg That was all for today. Looking forward to finishing it, and dummy fitting it, hopefully it will work out. |

If this turns out well enough (it really is very rough, and the bezel has two 10mm stress tears in it) to fit to the truck, we may just have to get you and the Rivnut gun here to fit the stainless nuts for my mirrors as well as the search light. Once you have found your photos of your old builds, we can scan them here and start you your own build thread showing off your Mi-STRESS. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Carried on with the last few pieces of the light today.
Finished the machine polishing, then carried on hand polishing it all, followed by reassembling it all. Found a patent number on the support arm, also ended up polishing off the chrome on it, which came off really easily, leaving a solid brass arm. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps06bd03b2.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps82d4d62d.jpg Finished light against the cab for detail. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfc642a37.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps949ab73b.jpg Proposed position for the light on the truck. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psbd97b4fe.jpg So quite a lot of time spent getting this light from before to now and I must say, the wear on it actually appeals to me. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Merry Christmas everyone.
Nicola got me some plates, which includes a 1950 plate from a Russian tractor. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc60e8091.jpg I got her a bunch of girly stuff and some pipes, a pipe rack and a decent reference book on smoking pipes for her collection. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8af38249.jpg After prezzie opening (the kids were here too) they carried on watching Disney movies, which they do every year. I went down to the garage to sort out a few bits, refit the signs and plates on the shed that the storms took of the other night. Then I mounted all the number plates and loads of others I have recently traded and collected etc. I also checked the trucks oils, tyre pressure and lights, just a general check over as i may be using it tomorrow to go to Farningham to the yearly Boxing Day classic bike get together with some friends, including Woodsie and Martin. Once that was done I needed to scratch another itch. Last week a pickup truck lost its canopy spectacularly a couple of miles from here. It ended up in pieces on the side of the road, and a few days later it was tossed over the Armco barrier into the bushes. I have wanted to build a removable aluminium canopy for the rear of the truck that can be used for camping if mounted on a set of legs. The rear sliding glass was the only bit that was not broken up, and I saw it as a perfect addition to the canopy, against the cab rear. So armed with some leather gloves and a hacksaw and spare blade, I went to see if it was still there, and found it...... http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psf5b0b644.jpg Cut out the glassfibre back frame and removed the glass before the council come to clear it away. Now sitting in front of a fire, cheese and biscuits and a nice coffee...... Perfect end to a great day. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4aafb338.jpg Looking forward to finding a cheap or free aluminium caravan to strip the ally sheeting from to cover the canopy in, using a pair of stainless portholes I got from the tip for this job some time ago..... and will still figure out the rear door and latch/catch. Watch this space too. |

Seems it is time for PLAN B. Top Banana do not ship parts to England.
Grrrrrrrr!!!! Guess that means finding somewhere in the USA to ship to and the having the parcel re-posted to me as a Gift or similar and paying the poster by Paypal for the postage costs. They are at this address: Top Banana Parts 22174 Timberlake Rd., Ste. C-2 Lynchburg, VA 24502 So now need to figure the most cost effective way to get the repair panels to me. Nobody said it was easy, but I guess it is part of the adventure. |

Just in process of ordering the patch panels I will be needing for the repairs on the truck.
Last week Martin gave me a spare wheel for the truck, on an original rim, but the tyre is bigger than what I want as the truck runs on 225/75-15 at the moment, so I need to find a used tyre to fit to it and remove the tall one fitted. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc6cf7540.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps07c7a812.jpg Tonight after work, Martin came around to measure up my relocated tank etc, as he wants to remove his cab mounted tank and have a relocated tank behind the diff between the chassis rails, and has found someone who is prepared to custom build him one for under £200.00 At the same time my buddy Scott (Jabbo) came around to pick up a vintage hotel laundry basket I had given him and to drop off four wheels and tyres from a set of 5 he recently bought for a project he is collecting parts for...... so I have wheels to roll the truck about on when I start the body work prep. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc9e5b0c2.jpg I have also managed to get in touch with Top Banana in Lynchburg, Virginia to order my parts which will be shipped to Ta2Don who will then repack and post them to me, as TB do not ship to the UK. Thanks to Rusty in Texas for offering to take delivery and ship to me as well. Things are starting to move in the right direction now. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
I'm glad to see you got things squared away Rian. I would have been willing to help ship as well. Look forward to seeing your bodywork and new paint job.

Best quality patch panels. Cost so far $150.00 or £94.00 Delivery to Don in Arkansas and then forwarded to me as TB do not ship to the UK. Completely off thread, but it started out with a trip to the garage to check out the truck.
Not quite tip treasure, but absolutely FREE from Freecycle yesterday. 170 plus building blocks, 3 miles from home, collect and they were mine. Mickey supplied the van, we worked together and brought them home. Mickey needs a front and rear porch on his place, so along with the some FREE double glazed doors and windows from a local fitter who does a lot of complete replacements and is happy to let us have some, then some recycled timber for the roof etc and an almost free addition to his home. I will be using some blocks to build some bits around the back of the garage. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps22532bc8.jpg Nicola's mum has been at hospital since early today, and will be admitted when a bed comes available. As a result she was there all day as well. This left me at a loose end, and ended up cleaning the stove/cooker, extractor hood, kitchen etc, then tried to watch a bit of recorded car programmes on telly while surfing the web forums as well. Ended up going down to the garage instead and checking out the truck cab as I was under the impression that they used to come with a bottle jack fitted under the seat..... wrong. Have bought a 200mm tall 4 ton bottle jack now. While down there I started to measure one of the 170 plus building blocks I got yesterday, as I want to make Nicola a Celtic cross as a "Secret Surprise" for her birthday..... she has always loved them and photographs them in graveyards etc. Here is how far I got today, next up will be carving the front face, then designing the sides and other facets with various Celtic knots. Hope you can see what I am trying to do. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps06fbcbd1.jpg Drilled some holes..... http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc2dcb5da.jpg Cut some wedges out http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps460cbe0d.jpg RESULT !!!!!
