Re: 67 SWB First Build
I know exactly what you're going through - the sanding never seems to end. We've been sanding on our truck for months and decided to take a break from bodywork to work on mechanical items. Besides, it's hard to get the shop warm enough to spray anything right now anyway.
But keep going - one day, all of a sudden, you'll be spraying color! |

I’ve been tinkering in the shop a little bit each night. I’ve got the bed ready for a spray in liner. I went back and forth on whether to paint or line it, but because the wheel tubs and front panel are original and have minor flaws, i think the bed liner will hide it better. So hopefully that happens this weekend.
Also, I’ve been doing a lot of searching here on the forum regarding my partial vin on the frame. From what i can tell, it is a 67 frame, based on the first # being a 7. I had a few reservations on the accuracy of this as my frame has the dimple for power steering, and it also looks like the core support mounts have too large of holes. It’s hard to tell if a previous owner enlarged them or not. Does anyone know if a 67 frame could have power steering? |

Quick update.
To make sure i had the right mounts for the core support, i decided to install and align the front clip of the cab. Looks like it is a 67/68 frame for sure!Attachment 2077776 Finally got to spraying some urethane primer. Started off by spraying the bed floor just so i could get a feel for how it sprayed. Attachment 2077777 Next i sprayed the cab and front clip. It turned out decent other than a little orange peel. Attachment 2077778 This week i started to wet sand the urethane primer with 400grit. I have to admit, i actually don’t mind the wet sanding (so far). It’s pretty satisfying feeling the panel get so smooth and looking so straight. Pretty sure I’ll need one more coat of the urethane primer to finish it up before i seal it. Attachment 2077779 I’m going to try to sneak up to the shop this weekend to make some more progress on the sanding :uhmk: |

After wet sanding everything I went through and sprayed another coat of 2k urethane primer. I’ve started up in the sanding again after i let it cure for a bit. Mainly been working in the evenings for an hour here and there.
The cab is looking pretty good. I went through and marked it up with some tape to fill in all the small little pin holes i missed earlier. Also hit a couple spots with seam sealer that i had missed and then the are a few spots that need a small spot prime and sand to get right. I hope to finish up the sanding in the near future so I can move everything out of the shop and to a potential bodyshop to cleanup anything i missed and to get paint rolling. Looking forward to putting this step of the project behind me. Pictures aren’t anything special, but nothing exciting has really happened haha. |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
I'm right there with you - not much visual progress to see, but it all pays off when the paint goes on. This is a time-consuming part of bodywork for sure. But it looks like you're close to paint!

Looking Awesome! Great to see another Pacific NW Person here. I was born in Spokane and went to college there, great place.
Great job on the truck!! |

As i mentioned above, still trying to stay motivated on the project and making the most out of my short stints in the shop!
I have pretty much the entire pickup sanded down to 400. Only a few minor things to go over before i call it good on my end! Switched gears to the frame. I had been talking forever about getting the frame blasted and I’m finally ready to make it happen. I stripped the frame bare and have it ready for a mobile blaster. Lots of rivets removed for the future suspension ;) |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
Awesome! Glad to see your finding time for the truck with the little one. How is the adjustment? I will be in the same place in the next few weeks and I have been going hard on my truck while I still have the time. I am very excited to meet our little one and hope to still get out there too. Great work on the truck!:metal:

Congrats on the baby, btw. Being a parent is one of the coolest things ever. And a little advice, spend a little time before the baby is born cleaning up your shop. Makes it much easier to stay productive on the project with a clean work area and less time to work on it... ohhh and coffee :mm: |

Blasting done! Hope to get everything coated in the next couple of weeks and then dive into putting it back together.
Planning on using a POR15 frame product. |

Managed to get the frame and front crossmember in paint. I did a couple coats of POR-15 rust preventative and then a couple coats of POR-15 top coat chassis black. Looks a whole lot cleaner and seems to be very tough. I made sure to test fit the c-notches before paint. Getting the QA1 suspension kit installed is next on the list.
|
Re: 67 SWB First Build
Looking good! I wish I could afford QA1, it looks super nice and I bet it handles like a dream. Unfortunately I feel that by the time I would pay conversion plus shipping it would be like twice the cost.:(

The suspension kit front and back is mostly installed. Biggest pain of the entire project was all the rivets that had to come out. It me roughly a week and a half to get the entire kit installed with an hour here and there.
Started off by reinstalling the front crossmember and wheeling the rear diff to the rear. Attachment 2110741 I did most of the frame modifications prior to paint, but this one slipped my mind. Just a quick coat of paint over it after I finished. Attachment 2110742 Suspension front and rear installed mostly. Everything fit together really nicely. Definitely seems like a quality product. Removing Rivets were the toughest part of the entire operation. Attachment 2110743 Mocked up my fuel cell to makesure there weren’t any conflicts with the Pan head bar and the rear sway bar. Attachment 2110744 Should have plenty of clearance to my rear filler. Attachment 2110745 Some more parts are on order and hopefully by end of this summer I’ll have a roller to send off to paint. |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
That's an impressive amount of quality work! Can't wait to see how that paint turns out.

Re: 67 SWB First Build
Lookin good bruh!
|
Re: 67 SWB First Build
Damn that is looking great!!
How in the heck are you able to work on it in this crazy stupid heat!?! It is killing me not working on the truck... I will be a bit this weekend though... I am at that point i need to add primer and start the final filler and well in this heat i cannot. So i will be installing Seam Sealer and POR15 in places. I can keep the shop door down, fans going and mini-split on to keep it around 80 inside maybe, otherwise i need to open the shop door to exhaust the paint fumes from the the primer.. Stay safe and cool sir. |

Over the last couple weeks i got some small stuff buttoned up. Lots of bouncing around on the frame while I wait for my brake kit to show up.
Rear sway bar loosely installed. Everything fit very well together with the QA1 kit! Attachment 2118146 Tank installed for hopefully the last time. Also got the new moser 5 lug axles and bearings/seals swapped into the rear end. Attachment 2118147 Front sway bar installed. Waiting to sandblast and paint my center drag link to get those steering components installed. Also i was able to get the new prebent brake lines laid out. Attachment 2118145 Have my fingers crossed that my brake kit shows up this week. I’m getting anxious to make this thing into a roller! |

Another small item checked off the list. Got my front suspension components installed. The centerlink is from a squarebody that i purchased from a member on this site. I was surprised how tough it was to locate one locally.
Attachment 2126804 New 73’ -87’ tie-rods installed. Attachment 2126805 Started installing the new brake kit. Took awhile to come in but looks awesome. Something i didn’t realize was the rear rotors need bored to fit the axle hub and the axles need machined down to accept the rotors. Minor inconvenience, but the final install will have to wait until i get them into a shop. Attachment 2126806 Attachment 2126808 Attachment 2126807 |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
Man is that ever looking good! Is it a square body engine crossmember as well?

A few small updates to the chassis. I got the rear axles turned and the rotors bored. They fit get together. I did run into an issue though when installing the rear kit. The rotors would lock up when i snugged them up to the axle. I think the e-brake pads were too wide and catching on the inside of the rotor. For the time being I removed the e-brake and everything turns as it should. I’ll look into it later on down the road.
I also installed my in-tank fuel pump and sending unit. Nothing too crazy complicated there. I plan on running EFI so I set up the fuel system accordingly. This includes 3/8” fuel hose and a pressure regulator with a return line. Again, nothing too difficult, just took time figuring out all the parts and pieces i would need. A few small things to finish up on the chassis before i hopefully dive into the transmission and engine. That should be a good winter project i imagine. Ideally I’ll get those items installed and then be able to throw the body back on for the last time. |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
All is looking very nice and like it will handle nicely. Did you have to drill any holes for the rear sway bar or did all the brackets bolt in using existing holes? It looks like a nice setup.

More small things to check off the to do list for the chassis.
Re-bent the stainless steel brake line. If i were to do this again, I think i would not have used stainless steel, as it was much tougher to flare. Also, I welded new tabs for the brake line. I think it came out decent. Attachment 2153131 Installed some exhaust pass throughs in the cross member. I was leaning towards just using pipe and welding, but I didn’t think my welder was big enough for that thick of steel. Found this kit online and was pretty straight forward for the install. Attachment 2153132 Last big update other than installing a new red head power steering box was trying these wheels on for size. A friend of my father in law asked if I’d be interested in his old wheels. He’s offering me a deal that is hard to turn down. Their 18x12 in the rear and 18x10 in the front. The fronts just barely clear the lower control arm and the rears are going to require widers tubs to play it safe. The tires have only a couple hundred miles on them, too. Attachment 2153133 Attachment 2153134 Attachment 2153135 Needless to say, i have new tubs on order. Wasn’t the exact route I was planning but after looking at them more, I think they’ll get the job done and should make for nice cruising. |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
looking good do you have a link to that bolt on exhaust hole pass-through kit?

New tubs showed up after Christmas so i took the time this weekend to get them mostly installed. Plenty of room now for the rear tires. Toughest part was just modifying the floor rib to fit the outside tub lip.
Still need to prime the last wheel tub and do a little more bodywork on the fender wheel well lip. Getting there, slowly but surely. |

Still trying to narrow down a weekend to get my engine put together, so in the meantime I started cleaning up my vent windows. The original chrome seemed to clean up really nice after using some 0000 steel wool. All the pieces were scuffed/cleaned and painted. I replaced all of the seals with precision rubber that I ordered from GMC pauls. Using some Youtube videos helped a lot with the reassembly. The toughest part seemed to be getting the rubber into the corner of the frame. Onward and forward!

Been busy with work and projects around the house. I’ve managed to make a little progress on the project. I cleaned up and repainted the engine block and heads chevy orange. My dad and i installed the valves in the heads and hung the rods on the pistons. Next up is to check clearances on the block.
I’ve also been slowly sanding the high build primer on everything. Everything Is looking straight with very minor touch up areas. Al |
