Special concession to the Safety Police ;)

Bootfair sucked today.

20p bowl.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjpnnso7f.jpg

Brand new ramp. £20.00 for mate Craig for his Messerschmidt three wheeler and bikes onto trailer.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psglquwm5q.jpg

Chevy T-Shirts, new £3.00 each
Crowbar fro Craig 50p
6 foot ruler £2.00 for a friend who collects measuring equipment

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psok7dmsmu.jpg

Not able to find any castors, so went to McDonalds for brekkie and a coffee till 09.00 and then to Tool Station for four casters at £12.50
Thankfully a painless purchase due to all the random other savings elsewhere.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

After I packed the tools away and came in, it was a choice of which beer first.

In the end it was Bud as Dennis suggested it was the better option.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4xg5ahkc.jpg

Along with crisps and some dried sausage, I had a good evening.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfvldfmpz.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps76tb6f8g.jpg

This mornings search for Casters for the new welding trolley at the two Bootfairs I go to, ended up empty handed, so I went to McDonalds and had a breakfast wrap and coffee, to kill time thenoff to,Tool Station to get some casters as I could not find the ones I knew I owned.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pslvagz9eu.jpg

£12.49 for four nylon casters in 75mm size.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshrioqxrm.jpg

I made a 10mm ply floor for the trolley base and then tried it for size.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps1lngmvzr.jpg

Then also decided to make a decent hook onto which to hang all the cables when not in use.

While looking for some spare hooks, I found this little box......

Guess what was inside....?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssehcmqqz.jpg

Decided this would be a good option as I like the gear visually.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqgcorkbo.jpg

And welded, bolted in place.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnnbrgxeo.jpg

Next up would be the frame and top table where the grinders would live.

More in a while.

Thanks for looking in.

Dude, that is the way goes sometimes. I think everyone does that.
What I like even better is find something that I forgot I had and think I always wanted one of those.

At least you'r back in the shop making things happen and getting closer to truck stuff.

Nice job on the cart.

Agreed Vince.

I actually just laughed at myself when I found them.
I knew they existed, but had forgotten they had gone into a box on the shelf.
Was under the impression I had given them away.

And finding stuff is always good.

Just need to find the steering knuckle I lost in there a couple of years ago.

Nice job on the cart.

Thank you Bill,

I am pleased with the way it has evolved and come out.

Next up I cut and sectioned the top frame tubes by removing 300mm from it.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psgj98h3jr.jpg

Then welded and ground it all back together.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0yrjoo3c.jpg

Giving me a large potential table for grinders and accessories to be placed on.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psg7z55z1l.jpg

I had been asked to feed back on this welder by a few people.

Well, after finishing my assembly, I called Neil of Rally Design to thank him for putting me onto this machine.

It makes welding a doddle, even for a numpty like me.

Penetration is great as is spread of the weld.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssbilefwd.jpg

Once the top table frame was ready, with the steel supports welded in place the rest just took time.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxvp8ymom.jpg

Not that impressive turned over.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psun28tdn1.jpg

Wheel plates welded in and position of castors decided.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqxqfdxct.jpg

And job done.

I had to go feed Joy’s dog and cat as she is away for the weekend.

Also walked him.

Next up, paint frame, wood and make a top shelf for the trolley.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psou5lhd6x.jpg

That’s all for now.

Looks good Rian it’s always helpful being able to move the welder around on wheels . Having a place to put the grinders will speed up the process when DOING THE TRUCK

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Long day in London

With the “New Improved Train Service” it now takes me an extra 30 minutes door to door on my original 2 hr commute and my return trip is three trains including a 20 minute wait for one. Into London is two or three trains too.

Service is a word used in Animal Husbandry too.......... go Google that.

Got home and the only solution was garage time.....

After.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psch0ogcla.jpg

Took an old 32/36 ring spanner, removed an inch in the length

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psrhhfowsz.jpg

Glued together.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psv2uprlt5.jpg

Welded to the front of the frame, which fitted under my welding table after I had modified the wheel mountings to gain 25mm for it to roll in there, rather than raise the table.

Spanner is a handle, but also place to hang my grinders when they are not used.

Second King Dick spanner added to stop them pivoting under the table.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pspyifro6x.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psvsvkxkos.jpg

Done

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqcjuakbj.jpg

Paint next.

Floors got Matt black.

Frame, Red of course.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psr8hj4fbr.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pscm4hrwc3.jpg

Two coats of red, done by 8.30 pm

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjfqhdtnm.jpg

And a photo taken this morning.

Assembled.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psn1njd2nn.jpg

Yes, I am very pleased with the result

Cheap tools.

Thank you all.

Evening Gents (Ladies)

I plan on getting started on the welding on my truck soon.

A few random holes will need fixing.....

Including the dash.

Any advice on what to look out for etc, in order to get the best possible job done, gratefully received.

The modern Radio/CD player seems to have been fitted by a mad Badger with a meat cleaver.
Note the edges...... WHY, Why Why can people not do stuff right or just leave it alone if they have no bloody clue?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psf9e6aefa.jpg

So I opened the small parcel first, it was from Illinois, from Dan "WhippinSaw" and was the replacement panel for the radio opening in my trucks dash that had been put there by an Angry Badger on mind altering drugs.

Lovely bit of replacement metal to be welded in when I cut a huge hole in the dash. Thank you mate.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0955fe8c.jpg

Speaker hole in drivers door to be closed too, with a donor panel from a 65door.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps5e22312c.jpg

B pillars need to be repaired and welded up too.

Advice happily received.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps269jztlr.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps54dclah6.jpg

Thank you in advance.

If you have a thread on cutting and welding a dash, please post links in here.

Look forward to this.

As always, these forums do come up with various options.

I also posted the same question on General section of this forum and got various replies from the guys.

I am sure that between myself, @johnnybravo and @samta22 we will get some progress made, with minimal tears.

Sat in a two day business meeting at Heathrow in a closed in hotel conference centre, alll I am doing is moving truck parts and tools around in my garage I’m my head though :mm:

Roll on Sunday, as Saturday will be spent with Joy.

And a BBQ afterward.

Bought an extra bottle of gas as well, in case the one I have runs out.

Hi Rian, not been on here for a week or two so just catching up, the weld trolley looks great, very professional👍

I hadn’t realised how bad your speaker and stereo holes were, clearly marked out in crayon and cut out with a (blunt) can opener.

My only advice would be to cut out all of the damage if your patches are big enough and take your time getting the fit right before you go near it with a welding torch. Time spent up front will save you much more time later ( and I hate sanding filler )

I always enjoy your thread but it’s great to see the truck on it again 👍

Palf70Step 06-21-2018 07:44 AM

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Maybe you can find someone to cut some panels out of a scrap cab when you come to the states later. That would be the easiest to fix those speaker holes.

The panel bond works great for some things, but since those areas are exposed I prefer the welding thing for the smoother look.

Only advice I know is very slow. Tack, wait, grind, wait..... do again.

Thanks Ian.

Very good to be back on the truck..

I feel ready to get back into it.

Had to stay away from it while my head and heart was screwed up. Possibly more than most realise.

Yes Bill, patient is what makes a job come out better than rushing.

I will try.

Don’t have time to find a set of panels in the USA before welding them in.

Needs more speed.

Random alert.

Been away at a sales conference, training and more corporate “stuff” at a hotel at Heathrow airport

One of the things today was to model some kids Play Doh to represent something that meant something to you.

This was actually something I did after the initial modelling assignment.

Representative of my 26 years in this industry..... and what I head when managers go on and on.

Managers, take note.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssw9hjqab.jpg

My model was a truck, filled with balloons in the rear, plus of course Roadkill Kitty under the wheel.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshgw4fezk.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psk7fiavf7.jpg

After leaving the meeting, the M25 was busy, but not total chaos, popped in to see Joymand Wyzz her dog, then down to Morrison’s to get some food and bread.

Well.....

When I stopped there was an abandoned shopping trolley with £1.00 in it, and when I left....... there was another abandoned trolley.

£2.00 in my pocket, or $3.00 scored.

Why would I say no to free cash?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psrwativtw.jpg

Bought three cases of discounted Bud Light for Sunday, £4.40 saving per pack. So £13.20 saved.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psuaeyytbk.jpg

Got the bread, then went to look for meat for Sunday’s BBQ and found the in-house butcher marking down short dated meat.

These people are crazy anal about the dates.

I bought Fillet steak, Pastrami Briskett and some pork chops......

Check the crazy price reductions.

Bought £38.00 worth of meat for less than £2.00

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pso4jest9q.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psonvnerwz.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pspf6ncpbc.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3bcakcau.jpg

Brought the meat home and prepped it for the oven.

Extra garlic and olive oil, sealed in foil and into the oven for 6 hrs at 110’C

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psrhdeir3l.jpg

In the end, adding up the savings, I had saved £51.00 or about $75.00

I am looking forward to seeing what the final, result is.

Contemplating smoking one of these on a fire too.

Back in a bit.

One more quick update.

Welder trolley final assembly tonight, included the cable hook that I made yellow.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psudxnd7cs.jpg

All done.

Though he died years ago, I think my dad would have approved as well.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pseqsjvi8r.jpg

Next time we see it, I may just be welding.

Thanks for checking in.

Bedtime soon as I have to get up at 01.00-ish to process the Briskett.

Ray, as a “non beer drinker” the Bud Lights go down real well.

Looking forward to September.

Had to do a small bit of welding for Mickey next door today, trolley meant welder got pushed all the way there and back.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxzhxwfra.jpg

Then cut grass etc, at one point saw a parcel had been propped up against the side gate that was open.

Turned out it was from Chris, the GrumpyNorthener.

He does some serious restorations, often having concourse winners too.

Some of his work.

Friday morning on the way to work I collected a new bottle of 5% Argon/CO2 mix gas for the welder.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqzjqsvlv.jpg

Late afternoon on the way home, I popped into my favourite Turkish butcher for some T-Bone steaks kebabs and smoked sausages.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pskk2stpgs.jpg

Saturday morning I did lots of yard work, till 12.30 then showered and went over to Joy’s place.

She offered to drive......

What a pleasure.

She knows all the back roads and short cuts.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqtbxjrvb.jpg

First stop was Tool Station to get a spare (no 3) angle grinder.

£27.00 for 750 watt.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psybdwlt5t.jpg

After this we went shopping, then walked up to the poor side of town, and both had a Turkish mixed grill and a coffee.

Rather good, leaving us stuffed.

Then back to her place to walk Wyzz.

I went home by 10.00 pm as I was knackered.

Awake at 04.00 on Sunday after 5hrs sleep was not ideal

Then off to Bootfairs by 06.15

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psq8gatrtu.jpg

Bought for £1.00 this collection box was last used in 1931.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pstsi2z0cr.jpg

Couple of Tiki salt n pepper shakers for MrTiki.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psovpkhp4g.jpg

£2.00 coin, bought with another medallion. Wonder if it is still legal tender.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psamj6thz2.jpg

Then homeward as I was expecting the MoJo Crew of JohnnyBravo, Samta22 and CraigRK.

Craig was here by 09.00offloading plastic pallets and the MoJo Twins parked up just before 10.00 am.

Coffee, biccies and a good hour long chat, strategising and planning ensued.

Then the slow walk to the garage.

It was on.

18 months since Craig and I rebuilt the brakes on the truck,on the 19th December 2016

Crazy, yes.

Grizz1963 06-24-2018 05:16 PM

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Once we were done chatting etc, it was time to go push the Chevy chassis and cab out the garage.

Did I mention it’s been 18 months.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psapevlsnr.jpg

The shy retiring JohnnyBravo behind the cab with Sam checking out the holes,

Mr Bravo loves to solve problems.

http://forum.retro-rides.org/thread/...heels-on-wagon

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psza754wg4.jpg

How do you draw a circle with calipers when there is no centre?

Create a bridge of course....

Once the bent metal had been pulled back to ground zero.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshuceuleu.jpg

Sam double checking.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psburkygyl.jpg

Then using a keyhole powerfile that I bought years ago, I cleaned the paint around the excess holes in preparation for the welding up.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pss0bwukjy.jpg

Once the new circles had been screened, I welded up the holes outside the perimeter and then used the Dremmel tool to cut through the wasted steel.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pscdil0mtn.jpg

At that point, Craig climbed in with a second Dremmel tool on the drivers side.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psb4w4suyw.jpg

Flap wheel to tidy up the welded up holes

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pspnfmai4e.jpg

Once the holes were tidied, inside and outside, it was time to get the airline on the Joggler.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps2gpntxyb.jpg

Joggler result at its best.

Recessed surface to allow for flat welding a panel in to cover space.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psexrxzopf.jpg

At this point the next step was to be measuring and cutting the patch panels.

Next up, mark out the patches.

Cut out and tidy up.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxfpgjen8.jpg

In order to maximise fixing the new steel it was decided to drill 3mm holes and clean up the steel on both surfaces, than to puddle weld the patches in.

Craig held the steel in place for maximum contact and fit.

First series of puddle welds.

By 3.30 we shut shop as I had achieved all I wanted for the day.

And fire and beer sounded so much more interesting.

Packed tools etc away, pushed truck back and locked up.

It’s really not enough to just say thank you, but that does sum it all up.

It was a great day to end a lovely weekend.

After the guys left, Joy came over for a couple of hours.

Thanks for checking in.

This week I will carry on with the welding and grinding.

18 months! Life goes by to quick doesn’t it.

Great start on the speaker holes, they will be great when it’s finished, are you going to fit seatbelts?

Hi Ian,

Time certainly flies.

The speaker holes were a real issue to my head as I prefer the clean metal look.

Yes, I plan on fitting seatbelts, they are a part of my psyche, so I feel mush better with them fitted.

Do you have advice?

Thought I would add a short clip of JB driving the joggler off the compressor.

Certainly a tool worth its price if you are doing panels with good metal.

Not sure how much hard work a manual one is.

Not to bring up a subject on safety but it looks like your whole crew needs some lessons! I know what could go wrong RIGHT! They do wait to break out the Beer that is a good thing.

Hi Rian,
I too am going to fit 3 point seatbelts. When thinking about how I might do this, the task that perplexes me the most is how to fit and weld the threaded retainer plates into the cab pillars for the upper (shoulder) mount. It occurred to me, perhaps too late now, that the speaker holes would provide the perfect access.

Martin was explaining today Ian.

There are a few ways to do it.

I want to find a set of red retractable belts.

And will fit a third seat belt too.

Long, hot, tiring day at work.

Got home by 6pm, fed cats, got changed, set sprayer up on lawn with 60 minute timer and headed into the garage

Mickey popped over too, the moment he saw the door open.

I had decided that I will be doing repeated, no’s 2,3:4 of the edge welds to the steel patches, as I want to fit 3 point safety belts to the truck.

Cleared out the scrap cut out on Sunday

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psak16molb.jpg

Mickey did the camera honours.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psyaqj6shw.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnlyhyc9u.jpg

Round two done, two more to go.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxqwg2fr2.jpg

Happy guy, yes.

Good to be back.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3sedfywj.jpg

Having consulted Lugnutz’ guide on fitting these modern seatbelts it became apparent that I would need to s cure the patch panels fully before fitting a backing plate and mounting holes.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3vdvwzdo.jpg

Tomorrow I have a date, so there won’t be any progress, but the next step will be to dress back the welds and correct any flaws before measuring out where the new s at belts will get mounted.

Thanks for checking in.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Had a dinner date last night, so only got 30 minutes to go down to the garage, between getting home, feeding the cats and having a shower before leaving.

Of course you can do “Something” in 30 minutes

Moved bike out of the garage and a couple of bits from the cab so I could move freely.

Grinder. With 80 grit flap wheel, not too aggressive if you handle it gently.

Original plug welds and holes all look a bit scruffy, but should fix OK.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pscnczffmi.jpg

One side done, more welding to be done next time to fill recess between patch and body panel.

Clean and ready for welder.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjnqjz0gl.jpg

Other side done.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pseaiirukj.jpg

Looking forward to next chance to pull welder out.
