Installed wiper arms, trial fit the cowl, got the vac booster mounted, installed the heater, put the radiator in, mounted a quick mount gps/mp3, made a power steering resovoir mount, mounted the windshield squirter resovoir, still delaying the wiring way too complicated, got the windshield and back window in..........coming soon, doors, hood, grille surround....

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I decided to try out an idea that's been rattling around in my head for awhile. I always thought some contemporary Corvette wheelcovers might look like something someone would do back in the day. I had been shopping for some cheap ones on eBay. Then, my dad independently came up with the same idea, so I felt justified. These are from a '65 Corvette. They aren't perfect, but I did strip all the black paint out and repaint them after someone did a horrible job with a paintbrush. They didn't cost a lot, so I figure they're a good gamble. I love the way the six holes line up with the six lugs. They kind of remind me of a 1960s Hot Wheels car.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Pulled the hood this morning, then drilled alignment holes in both hood hinges, and removed them as well. Power washing comes next, followed by clean up and paint detailing.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Yesterday: (Finally!) finished my El Cheapo steering wheel restoration and repaint, got a new horn button and installed. Once I got the button out of the box I found it had a slight dent in it from shipping I guess (DOH!) But I wanted to put it on anyway for the pic. Necker knob I had bought for it didn't fit. Wheel is too thin for it.
Before (Nasty & Ugly): http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...a/DSCN0253.jpg http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...a/DSCN0254.jpg During (Nastier and Uglier): http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...a/DSCN0262.jpg http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...a/DSCN0263.jpg After (MUCH Better. Ok, it's not perfect and yes my cab looks like crap right now. Just did the wheel cause it looked unsafe to me): http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...a/DSCN0316.jpg http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...a/DSCN0317.jpg |

I like the idea of buffing them up and coating in Gibbs, but I'm not sure I'd have the enthusiasm to keep up with the periodic maintenance. |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I started the patina process, and the stepside bed is the "test bed", so to say. The process has thus far been a one step forward, one step back process.
First step was to clean all the "Gibbs" off the parts that I had covered them in last November (basically just wiped the parts off with xylene). The Gibbs did a really good job of protecting the parts for the last 7 months. The plan is to go with Sherwin Williams Industrial products. There is a Sherwin Williams nearby and when I explained to the guy that manages the store what I was doing he seemed genuinely interested in this project. He set me up with some Sherwin Williams Kem-Flash Primer E61 R 26. When I first started using it I realized it dries way to quick, which makes brush and roller application practically impossible (Remember its a Patina paint job... that's how it's done). So then I read the "Application Data Sheet and it specifically states "spray only due to short dry time" (imagine that, :dohh: read first dummy! ) It's also too red (see photo below), needs to be more of a brownish tint for the patina effect to look correct. Using my trusty "strip disc" and angle grinder I removed the 3 day old Kem-Flash. In the process I realized just how good the primer adhesion was. It took roughly twice as long to remove the new primer than the original paint and primer. Next up: Sherwin Williams Kem Kromik primer. It is slower drying and is more of a brown shade of red oxide primer. Bare with me on this guys. I know some of you think faking weathered paint is dopey, and using a brush and roller is even worse. But its a challenge I want to try. Here are a couple photos, lots more to come as things progress....
While the truck was out basking in the sunshine I did a quick walk around and interior video too. Other than making a dash pad the interior is done. |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I had good luck doing black, then brown, then the color, then a white mist. Use steel wool to rub it down on all the flat spots. I also kinda mixed the colers together when I was spraying it. If you don't like one spot it's easy to just repaint that one spot and kind blend it all together. On my 52 I had two blue fenders you can't even tell any more.:mm: My 64 is almost all fake.
|
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I would still like to do a fake patina on mine, but I'm torn because it would be nice to have a shinny truck again (it's been a while for me).

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I'm tuned in lakeroadster, My truck is patina flat red and red oxide primer and a fresh base/clear white top with all new tinted glass. If and when it stops raining I'll get some pics up.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Replaced some ugly firewall fasteners. Soaked the hood hinges and springs in TSP for several hours, scrubbed 20 years of crud off them. Tomorrow they'll get a bath in CLR. After that some light sanding should make them ready for new paint.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Cut out the old factory bump stops, and replaced them with some energy suspension 1 inch universals. Also put in a pair of new Belltech shocks up front. Now she has suspension travel and rides better than she did before I dropped her. Pics will be posted to my build thread as soon as I can get time on a computer.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Primed the step side bed components today with Sherwin Williams Kem-Kromik brown (red-oxide) primer. It really lays down nice and the color was spot on, at least IMO, for “Hot Rod Primer”. Used a 4 inch roller and a brush and will be applying at least one more coat. (Fauxtina Paint Job).
