This mornings search for Casters for the new welding trolley at the two Bootfairs I go to, ended up empty handed, so I went to McDonalds and had a breakfast wrap and coffee, to kill time thenoff to,Tool Station to get some casters as I could not find the ones I knew I owned.

I made a 10mm ply floor for the trolley base and then tried it for size.

I had been asked to feed back on this welder by a few people.

Well, after finishing my assembly, I called Neil of Rally Design to thank him for putting me onto this machine.

It makes welding a doddle, even for a numpty like me.

Penetration is great as is spread of the weld.

Looks good Rian it’s always helpful being able to move the welder around on wheels . Having a place to put the grinders will speed up the process when DOING THE TRUCK

Long day in London


With the “New Improved Train Service” it now takes me an extra 30 minutes door to door on my original 2 hr commute and my return trip is three trains including a 20 minute wait for one. Into London is two or three trains too.

Service is a word used in Animal Husbandry too.......... go Google that.

Welded to the front of the frame, which fitted under my welding table after I had modified the wheel mountings to gain 25mm for it to roll in there, rather than raise the table.

Spanner is a handle, but also place to hang my grinders when they are not used.

Second King Dick spanner added to stop them pivoting under the table.

I plan on getting started on the welding on my truck soon.

A few random holes will need fixing.....

Including the dash.

Any advice on what to look out for etc, in order to get the best possible job done, gratefully received.

The modern Radio/CD player seems to have been fitted by a mad Badger with a meat cleaver.
Note the edges...... WHY, Why Why can people not do stuff right or just leave it alone if they have no bloody clue?

So I opened the small parcel first, it was from Illinois, from Dan "WhippinSaw" and was the replacement panel for the radio opening in my trucks dash that had been put there by an Angry Badger on mind altering drugs.

Lovely bit of replacement metal to be welded in when I cut a huge hole in the dash. Thank you mate.

Hi Rian, not been on here for a week or two so just catching up, the weld trolley looks great, very professional👍

I hadn’t realised how bad your speaker and stereo holes were, clearly marked out in crayon and cut out with a (blunt) can opener.

My only advice would be to cut out all of the damage if your patches are big enough and take your time getting the fit right before you go near it with a welding torch. Time spent up front will save you much more time later ( and I hate sanding filler :lol:)

Maybe you can find someone to cut some panels out of a scrap cab when you come to the states later. That would be the easiest to fix those speaker holes.

The panel bond works great for some things, but since those areas are exposed I prefer the welding thing for the smoother look.

Only advice I know is very slow. Tack, wait, grind, wait..... do again.

Brought the meat home and prepped it for the oven.

Extra garlic and olive oil, sealed in foil and into the oven for 6 hrs at 110’C

Then using a keyhole powerfile that I bought years ago, I cleaned the paint around the excess holes in preparation for the welding up.

Once the new circles had been screened, I welded up the holes outside the perimeter and then used the Dremmel tool to cut through the wasted steel.

In order to maximise fixing the new steel it was decided to drill 3mm holes and clean up the steel on both surfaces, than to puddle weld the patches in.

The speaker holes were a real issue to my head as I prefer the clean metal look.

Yes, I plan on fitting seatbelts, they are a part of my psyche, so I feel mush better with them fitted.

Hi Rian,
I too am going to fit 3 point seatbelts. When thinking about how I might do this, the task that perplexes me the most is how to fit and weld the threaded retainer plates into the cab pillars for the upper (shoulder) mount. It occurred to me, perhaps too late now, that the speaker holes would provide the perfect access.

Long, hot, tiring day at work.

Got home by 6pm, fed cats, got changed, set sprayer up on lawn with 60 minute timer and headed into the garage

Mickey popped over too, the moment he saw the door open.

I had decided that I will be doing repeated, no’s 2,3:4 of the edge welds to the steel patches, as I want to fit 3 point safety belts to the truck.

Cleared out the scrap cut out on Sunday

Having consulted Lugnutz’ guide on fitting these modern seatbelts it became apparent that I would need to s cure the patch panels fully before fitting a backing plate and mounting holes.

Tomorrow I have a date, so there won’t be any progress, but the next step will be to dress back the welds and correct any flaws before measuring out where the new s at belts will get mounted.

Had a dinner date last night, so only got 30 minutes to go down to the garage, between getting home, feeding the cats and having a shower before leaving.

Of course you can do “Something” in 30 minutes

Moved bike out of the garage and a couple of bits from the cab so I could move freely.

Grinder. With 80 grit flap wheel, not too aggressive if you handle it gently.

Original plug welds and holes all look a bit scruffy, but should fix OK.

One side done, more welding to be done next time to fill recess between patch and body panel.

Clean and ready for welder.
