Installed Lokar E-brake cables, new E-brake hardware, new 5 lug rear axles, new drums, put differential cover back on, filled it with fluid, put the wheels and tires on, and set it on the ground for the first time in months. I'm starting to believe I might even drive it again someday:)! I did receive my Tremec Tko 600 a few days ago too.

Mostly built a rollcage for a friend & his Jeep. I did take time out to make an accelerator pedal for my truck. :D

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

When I first did the engine compartment back in 1992 I stripped everything to bare metal and started from there. I didn’t put all that much effort into the area under the inner fenders. I just gave them a good scrubbing and a shot of black paint to cover the yellow. Later some areas got a layer of Body Schutz undercoating. Brake fluid at some point also wrinkled a large area below the clutch master. With the open fenderwells it became obvious the firewall needed a lot more work to look decent.

So a couple days ago I soaked everything in degreaser and this morning had at it with a power washer. It blew off about 95% of the undercoat and black paint covering the original yellow. The paint and undercoat must have done a pretty decent job because there still isn’t any rust or cancer to deal with, just a lot of nasty residue to remove and clean up. Now I can finally get started on prepping for paint. I’m going to clean up everything the best I can without much disassembly and then spray it all gloss black.

With the hood off it’s easy for me to envision how cool it would look with a dual quad 6-71 supercharger (or tunnel ram), and fenderwell headers sitting out in the breeze. Maybe after I win the lottery!

Here’s what it looked like right before paint back in 1992:

And here’s what it looks like as of today:

Hey Mark that was the same time I went thru mine, only in `93, when I had a lot more energy, 6 weeks from start time to driving, that was stripping, painting, new door parts, engine, trans and alum bed...been driving the begeezes out of it sense then, just a little over a 120,000 miles on it, its time to do it all over again, this time big block, muncie, and air...maybe

I got bored, so I built a center console out of scrap wood and used the vinyl from my kick panels and doors to cover it. Still need to make the top, but I dig it.

No kidding about the diminished energy level. Twenty years ago I would have pulled the front clip, engine and suspension, stripped everything bare and started from there. Being old with back and knee problems, if I pulled it all apart there’s a good chance I’d never put it back together. Thankfully I’ll be happy if it just looks decent to the casual observer and in photographs.

I drove mine for about 15 years with a TH350 before I swapped in a Richmond 4 speed. There’s just nothing more fun than a manual 4 speed. My only regret is that I didn’t go with an M22 rock crusher. I just love the howling of those gears!

Pulled the wipers, cowl vent, fender extensions, heater plates, radiator baffles, washer hoses, and accomplished some minor cleaning. Also formed a new hard line for the clutch to replace the ugly and hurriedly formed piece added during the 4 speed swap.

Looked in your build thread, I was hoping to see it being built - what size/type padding did you use under the vinyl? Looks nice.

We got the cab stripped and pleasantly found it to be very rust free and in need of little bodywork.

I built it in about an hour, would have taken longer to take pictures than to actually build it.

The pad is some industrial pad stuff I got for free from a carpet store. It's a closed cell foam that is not quite a half inch thick. You could use regular home carpet pad, or any pad for that matter.

The sides are just 3/8" ply wood and the bottom is 1/2 MDF that I use for damn near everything. The face will be made out of wood and fiberglass to get the shape, then use wood veneer for pimp factor.

I ran out of fiberglass resin, so the top is on hold until the next Home Depot run.

Did you see my doors? I hope to get them painted this weekend, but I keep getting pulled off onto something else. I made a tweeter pod out of fiberglass and wrapped the whole thing in vinyl.

Finally took it out for a drive after a month and a half. Waited for real axle, drum. Put it all together in 107 degree temp but worth the drive around the block!!! 63 GMC suburban.

Added some Redline Water Wetter to the coolant, trying to help keep her on the cooler side as we approach our 100 to 110 degree summer time temps. Did another round of redneck polishing on the old chrome wheels, and they are starting to look pretty good for however old and neglected they are. Not much else going on besides that, she is still being driven every day, and the focus is now on the wife's 63 Cadillac getting it ready for the show this weekend.

I went to PPG and we pulled up the stock light green, I told them I wanted something that would look kind of stock but better. The paint guy said he could replace the white with silver metalic and the solid yellow with a transparent yellow. In my opinion the color looks very 60 ish but has a little more umphhhh..........Thanks for the compliments........I just want it finished so I can start driving it every day. :waah:

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Got the new hard line installed for the clutch, and even managed to bleed it by myself. I just stepped on the clutch pedal and then used a bar clamp/spreader against the front seat to hold it on the floor while I opened the bleed valve. It’s a pretty small circuit so it didn’t take all that many cycles to complete. Also noticed the brake booster/master cylinder was clocked about 5 degrees to the right, so I loosened the mounting bolts and rotated it to dead level. Now it’s on to paint prep.

Looking good Mark. All that attention to detail is destined to result in an engine bay that is as cool as the rest of your truck!

My engine bay definately matches my truck.... kind of a mess with possible potential
Rolled on the second coat of primer yesterday (in-process Faux-tina). The extra thickness and texture is needed so that, after application of color, the primer will show through the paint after wet sanding. At least that's what I am told ;).

You know guys, by posting this as I do each step, if this turns out bad, I got no place to hide :mm:.

I am also posting these steps on my build thread if anybody wants to see a more contiguous listing of the steps.

That's usually how I end up doing them, hard to find help for things like that sometimes. Now if only the brakes worked the same way....

Picked up a new antenna to replace the busted out original one, just a cheap aftermarket antenna but it should work just fine. I also got a new saddle cloth style seat cover, the old one is just crumbling underneath me.

Those bed rail corners really look good man, very nice work. That little bit makes a huge difference in how the bed looks as a whole.
