OK our North Carolina trip 2018
2275mi in 11 days started Oct 17 Day 1-2 Sorry it has taken a while I'm having trouble getting the pictures together. Like other years. We left home on a Wednesday at 5:30pm 2 hrs to the border and then about 3hrs to a friends place near Grove city Pennsylvania to spend our first night. Why is all this important, well we almost didn't make it. As we where about to get off the interstate in Grove city we started smelling something burning hot  I could not place the smell and all my gauges where good. We where 10 min from our destination so we kept going slow. The smell turned into a squeal I thought the serpentine belt was eating it's self. Found out the idler pulley seized causing the belt to slip and heat up and melted the tensioner pulley. The next morning I used our friends truck to go get parts, only took 20 min to replace idler, tensioner and belt but had to wait for parts. I replaced all these parts when I built the motor. Got under way at 2:00pm and drove the next 9 hrs stopping once for fuel with no problems the rest of the trip. Attachment 1845336 Attachment 1845337 |
Re: My 52 GMC Build
My goodness, that did get hot!
|
Re: My 52 GMC Build
Well at least they were stock parts, not some one off, so it was easier to replace...Jim
|
Re: My 52 GMC Build
wow, you get your mileage outta stuff eh? lol.
I have seen many of those belt failures. sometimes the belt will break and simply fall out on the road. sometimes it comes off and flaps around under the hood taking out a/c and other lines. sometimes, like yours, you get lucky and it is a simple fix. it has delayed you but not cost too much. sticking with stock parts is my goal. if you need something while on the road somewhere it should be readily available. good forethought on your part. sorry to hear about your troubles but good to hear you got it straightened out easily. |
Re: My 52 GMC Build
well finally you weren't smelling your tires burning! good catch and talk about good timing!! I don't want any dogs stopping you from visiting me next year!
|
Re: My 52 GMC Build
I’m glad it was a rather simple fix. I thought about you guys the whole time we were in GA. I really hated not being able to meet up. But so glad you guys had a safe trip.

North Carolina trip 2018 2275mi in 11 days started Oct 17 Day 3-4 Friday eve we went to Detroit Speed open house, they put on a great event. I know it's a f__d but this guy built an auto cross truck with a powerstroke diesel in it. Motor is into the fire wall 18". This is what a $100,000 paint job looks like all hand sprayed and buffed. 2nd pick is the ujoint and driveshaft. pic 4 The Goodguys show was good despite the rain. pic 5 Saw this truck outside the show can anyone tell me what is going on here? Re: My 52 GMC Build
Too bad about your first day hick up.
Glad you were able to fix it quickly!! $100000 truck.... I built mine for less ;);) That last pic is obvious, that truck isn’t grown up yet  |
Re: My 52 GMC Build
If it's frame swapped, probably on a 2-door S10 Blazer frame.

North Carolina trip 2018
2275mi in 11 days started Oct 17 Day 5-6 Sunday we took off from Charlotte and headed to a friends to hang out for the night on our way we, stopped in and met Phillip Thornton. He sells all kinds of Chev truck parts in N.C. Super nice guy. We love cool bridges wonder how many trucks hit this one, lots of marks on it. Then Monday morning headed to the east coast. I have had my GPS for a while it is super accurate so when it said we where below sea level  Then our first glimps of ocean from the truck, another mile stone. We set up camp at Virginia beach. Very noisy with all the fighter jets practicing. Attachment 1846746 Attachment 1846747 Attachment 1846748 Attachment 1846749 Attachment 1846750 |
Re: My 52 GMC Build
that cool, I'v seen that guy selling parts before. cool you met up with him. Stuff down south seems to be very pitted. Prolly bc of the salt water I'd assume.

Re: My 52 GMC Build
Hello lower50's. Enjoy your pictures of your road trips. I see that you travel with your guard dogs to protect you. Its kinda like this forums own little Travel channel. I like it.

One reason I show the trips is I always wonder what happens with the old trucks once the build is done, they seem to disappear. |

North Carolina trip 2018
2275mi in 11 days started Oct 17 Day 7 As we left the camp ground heading north we stopped to walk along Virginia Beach, this was the first time the dogs have seen salt water. Then we took the Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel, what a cool thing to drive. Put it on your bucket list. We stopped at the other side right up near the ocean at Fisherman island. The boys did not want to get out for a pee lol Then we stopped to have some local crab cakes in Cape Charles at The Shanty right on the water. We were told the best around, they where right. Our destination was Cape Henlopen state park near Lewes in Delaware. Got there about 10:00pm Attachment 1847150 Attachment 1847157 Attachment 1847158 Attachment 1847159 Attachment 1847163 |

Bob, great pics, the pic of the dogs you can imagine them saying "don't bother us"...Jim

Re: My 52 GMC Build
You know Bob I don’t remember seeing the pups last year. Still cool to see your trips. I like Virginia Beach hadn’t been there in years. Last time I was there went on a whale watching cruise. Had a lot of fun and froze my butt off. Didn’t see any whales though. Also when did you change the shifter handle?

North Carolina trip 2018
2275mi in 11 days started Oct 17 Day 8 We did some exploring around the state park it was a military base. We climbed a look out tower that was 75' tall I don't really like climbing things, but I did it, half way up CJ started shaking like a leaf so I had to carry him up, 30lb gets heavy fast. This Battery was built in 1942 all we could do is walk around it. Then down on the beach we could let the dogs run free with there leads. They loved exploring. It was cool to see 2 more towers down the beach. Then we checked out the big guns they had on display 3", 155mm, 8" and the big 16" Attachment 1847332 Attachment 1847333 Attachment 1847335 Attachment 1847336 Attachment 1847337 |
