Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Installed a dropped axle from Sid today. Had some trouble with the u-bolts not being narrow enough and had to trim the wedge shims down to 1.75". Bought some new rear brake lines and put some 31x10.50's all the way around it (it's the only size that I had four of) to get an idea of stance.

Put on a new sexy Quickfuel blackdiamond 780 VS carb for the 57 as it goes in for dyno tuning tomorrow and the old Holley 670 wasn't gonna cut it.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Pulled the truck into my garage last weekend- last night I finnally got to work..
Pulled the spark plugs, squirted some marvel mystery oil into each cylinder. Got out my breaker bar to attempt to turn it over manually- then realized there is no crank bolt on this thing... how the heck do you turn it over? I hooked my battery back up, thinking i would try and kick it over with the starter, since it spun for me last week (just didn't engage) I thought maybe i could whack it with a hammer and it would start engaging. Pushed on the stomp starter and POP! No more headlights and no more starter spin. :-( I used engine cleaner and power washed the engine bay before i moved the truck... guessing water got into the starter or something. Will have to pull the starter and see if it will work on its own, then re-install. |
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Sometimes you can pull the flywheel inspection plate and set a socket and bar on the converter or clutch bolt to see if it will turn or use a pry bar on the flywheel teeth.

This is a fun thread to read, but my first post in it as in the last few months all I can say is drove it to work day after day or every now and then make a beer run or jerky run into town--LOL!
We had to haul a garden tractor I had fixed up down to my Father-In-Law today, 150 mile round trip. My wife digs the old GMC, but didn't like my cup holder so last night I built a new one that I was able to attach to an extra ash tray slider. I loaded the tractor with my gantry crane in the shop, but forgot to take the camera on the drive. Came back with a tool box, several new air filters a couple new oil filters, new coveralls and a weedeater scored at a rummage sale. DAC |

I haven't had much time to get on the forum, but I bought this souix valve grinding setup for $100. I started tearing it down right away. By the time I'm done, it'll look like a brand new machine! |

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I got my Scott's bolt in cross member installed finally. All 32 bolts are in and tight and the engine is sitting on the new side mounts. If my calculations are right my wheels will be a half inch forward from their original location. I only moved them that far as I though they looked about right before. I am planning on starting an install thread but want to get farther along first.
My pic from Photobucket didn't make it. I'll try again. |
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
My Scott's bolt in cross member. This has taken me a lot longer than I expected. I'll have to trim two - three inches off of the original front cross member to get the steering rack in. Justin said it would be fine to just remove the whole thing but I don't think I will remove it completely. I had to change to the side engine mounts as the original style mounts bolt to the part of the cross member that will get cut away.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Russell Ashley I'm glad you checked in. I think yours will be one project that when finished you can give a strong testimony to those who are curious about the change when going from a straight axle to independent suspension.
Keep up the good work, Jim |

Thanks for the input. Daughter used to be a vets assistant and still has connections so we have good stuff if we need it. So far there has been some popping at night and he does not seem to care.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Softpatch, bought the radiator from tomsclassic on eBay. I made the shroud/fan mounting and bought the 16 electric fan from the local auto parts store.
|
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Ahhh, Softpatch beat me to it. I was going to ask the same thing about where the radiator came from? I like the top tank being a duplicate of the factory one.
Does it cool well? Are you happy with the quality of it? |
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Radiator is well made and looks good, no ugly welds or seams. I am using a 160 degree thermostat and the temp so far never goes above about 165! Being aluminum you do need to be careful of the fins when installing.

I sold my axle with CPP disk brakes and power steering setup, including the springs, and everything that was part of my front suspension. I had $1k in the upgrades, got $340 for the whole thing and was happy to get it out of my way.
