OK now. Think I got this one.

That has got to be an iron-age backwards sundial for when
they figured cars would be timed with solar energy!

This device turns down the timing on those solar engines
running on Solar-high speed and pinging because of it.

NO? Drat. More clues?

Is this a tool or something else? looks like the decorative embossing on the base, not many tools have that kind of decor.
Maybe an old siren out of an old police car?

Ellen congrats........no you didn't guess it, but your actually on the write track with sundial (but it's not nearly that old) and timing. This was made in the 17th or possibly early 18th century.

a tool used to index the hair spring when assembling a pocket watch

RUSHNBOBO 09-26-2011 11:50 PM

Re: Lets Play Whatz It? !!

Finally ..........well done, gotta know how did you find it ?....I know this was a difficult one.

I thought I was just going to have to start spelling out the whole thing one letter at a time.

This is a very old tool that is very practical. When you have to remove the hairspring and the roller tables from a balance wheel, you can use this tool to index where all the parts went. The arrow indicates the direction of the hairspring. The platform rotates. You place the bottom of the balance wheel so that the roller jewel fits into the slot in the cent of the table. You then rotate the table so the the post is where the hairspring stud is located. Using this tool makes it possible to not mark the rims of the balance for these positions. A very interesting and useful tool.

Ok....gmtec....it's yours....

Stopped by a friends "Mikey" to work on his 3" exhaust on a 72 lark
bought new by his Grandfather
he and his dad did the body work back in early 80's in this garage
his father passed suddenly a few years ago
and once in a while Mike will "find"something
this is it.....he's never seen it before,me neither
i thought there was another pic but can't find it.....so i'll go get another one
if i remember it has a "stick" pointing up from the base, with a dimple in the tip
and the bottom has some kind of leveling mecanism on each of the three points, as feet
