I went back to the body shop to pick up my rear fenders so I can drill holes for the tail lights before he paints them. The guy that had my truck before painted inside the fenders. Here's the problem, the new body guy showed me the paint was soft. The first guy didn’t use any hardener in the paint. Man, I'm sure glade he's not working on my truck any more! Anyway I spent the day today putting together the new steel under dash stereo box along with my air gauge and switches. Let me tell you, a round hole, no problem. A square hole, that takes some time. Here’s a picture of the box, It's has a black wrinkle finish on it right now, but it will be painted the same color as the truck to match the dash.

Thanks Kabwe! I fell like I'm getting some progress. We had a local car show this weekend call the "Strawbarry Festival". I had planned for my truck to have been done and in the show, instead, I was just a spectator.:(

Yesterday I purchased a air conditioning unit from Brothers. They are on sale for $899 until the end of the month. It's an Old Air Products kit with a up grade to a polished compressor and chrome dryer. I have on order a set of Billit Specialties air vents. That brings me to a decision I made today. Here's the problem, I have no flat place to mount the vents on the passangers side dash. So, here's what I going to do. I will smooth out the dash were the glove box is, this way Iwill have a nice smooth place to mount the vents. So no more glove box for me.

Here's a picture of the vent off Billit Specialties web site.

Okay, now it's time for me to get some advice from all of you. I just got my oak wood bed planks. I need to know want is the best finish to put on them for a long last deep shine and for durability?

dwcsr 05-28-2006 03:18 PM

Re: 58 GMC Project

What ever you use make sure that you do the ends top and bottom and sides. No matter what the finish if water gets in it will lift the finish or stain it under the finish.

this site seems to explain it fairly well.

http://paint-and-supplies.hardwarest...-finishes.aspx

Another site seems to say that Tung oil is best for ouside oak funiture. You would have to recoat every year.

Check into a marine varnish or urethane. As was already said try to put a coat on all sides as the moisture will come in from behind although not as bad as a soft wood.;)
