This thread was '66 specific, but don't think you'll ever find the 1st or last, the earliest and latest is more realistic. But oh well, in the meantime, here is a '64.

Guess it's time to wake this thread up from hibernation - there are probably a lot of new additions to be made.
C2536F146691, I have owned it since March 1982. Judging by the engine numbers it's an April build. |
Re: Attn 66 owners looking for the 1 st and last 66 built
Mine looks as if it is the 76,002 truck off the Freemont production line in 66. If I have read that right!

Third time is charmed: When they start the new year fresh, they started at 100001. Usually. In later years there were some plants where Chevrolet started with 100001 and GMC with 500001 (Cadillac trucks in Arlington started with 600001). Also - there were some passenger car plants where 6 cylinder cars started with 600001 and V8 cars with 100001. And - lastly - there were some rolling change model years where the VINs did not start over; they just kept climbing one by one based on the previous model year. It depends on what information the vehicle line executive and the program team want to encode and try to capture from the VIN (usually for warranty tracking purposes). These are a few of the reasons why the VIN does not necessarily reflect the build order. K |
Re: Attn 66 owners looking for the 1 st and last 66 built
Also - keep in mind relative to "Day one" or "Day two" that the plant starts off slow at start of production and ramps into full volume.
So you might only build one truck the first day, and ten the second, etc, taking a period of a week or maybe two (depending on the amount of product change) to ramp all the way up. Depends on how many build issues are uncovered. It's all speculative and really the only way to know would be if you were standing there as it happened. K |

Re: Attn 66 owners looking for the 1 st and last 66 built
I am reminded, too, that there is no correlation between assembly plants.
Each plant increments up, based on starting point, line rate, productive shifts, maintenance breakdowns, work stoppages, etc, independent from all the others. So - a truck with a lower VIN could have been built later than a truck with a higher VIN at a different assembly plant. K |

That is really nice! What do the door sills look like?
|
Re: Attn 66 owners looking for the 1 st and last 66 built
Solid without rust or bondo. In fact, I have been all over this truck and have not found any significant rust or evidence of rust repair. Hood, doors, cab, glass, bed and bumpers all appear to be original, fenders have been replaced. Wish I could find out more info on chain of ownership.
