I got distracted from the gauge cluster by finishing up the install of the new radio. The previous owner had already cut the dash, so my plan to mount the radio below the dash and use a radio delete plate went in the trash. I decided to just cut the dash the rest of the way for the new radio, and it turned out much nicer than I expected. If I ever decide to go back to a stock style radio, I would have to repair the dash anyways, so it just made sense to put the radio in the dash

Re: Frankentruck
I’ve been following you on instagram to keep up with your truck. The gauge swap looks good.

Re: Frankentruck
Happy to report that the temp gauge works great. Having some issues with either the speedo or odo, or both. Either way, they aren't working the best. The odo stopped for a second while driving, but then started to spin again. I don't really want to get a whole new speedo, but after apparently striking out with two original odometers, that might be my only option. I guess I'll figure it out eventually

On this new speedo, when I got it, I noticed that the end of the old speedo had broken off inside where the cable goes in. I though I got all the broken stuff out, but I'm not certain. I think what I'm going to try is to put the odometer roll from the new speedo into the old speedo and see if that works |

Saturday morning, I jumped in the rust bucket and drove up to the Chattahoochee National Forest to see my buddy get married. On the way up, the broken speedo bothered me so much that I just unplugged the speedo cable at the cluster. Once I got back home, I swapped back to the original speedo and put the odometer roll from the new cluster in it. Drove it about 2 miles just to have the odometer roll stop spinning again. That's twice now, and unfortunately, the 64-66 odometer rolls are larger than the 60-63s. I really want a working odometer, but I don't want to spend over 100 bucks for a new speedometer when my speedo works just fine without a stuck odometer roll.
It was pretty fun givin' her the beans on some dirt roads :metal: |

I messed around with the original speedo, but found out I had some plastic gears that were worn out. I just bought a new one and now my '61 speedo works good.

If you look back in the thread, I had picked up an Igloo Little Kool Rest to add some cup holders and the ability to keep mom's cooking cold on my trips back to college. Last week, I found the big brother. I got an Igloo Kool Rest off of Facebook Marketplace for a great deal. I would prefer a tan one, but I just couldn't pass this one up when I found it :metal:

Christian,
I just went through your entire post here and i just want to say "Thank you!" Thank you for striving to help others, thank you for your dedication to Christ. It was just awesome to read about all the other fellow Christians on here. May God use you to the most in your daily walk with him, God Bless my Friend. Ok, to the truck. Nice ride there sir. It is coming along and it has been great reading on your process and how you got to where you are. I cannot wait to read updates. |

Frankentruck has just been sitting back at home. This weekend is our fall break, so I'll be going back home and bringing her back to Milly with me.
The Deep Roots Festival is on the 26th of October this year, so of course I'll be hanging out downtown all day with Frankentruck and all the other cars. Can't wait to be driving her again :metal::metal: |

Got home today for fall break, and before I walked into the house, I jumped in the truck to see if she would awaken from her month long slumber. Happy to report that after turning over enough to build oil pressure and turn the dummy light off, gas finally got back to the carb and she fired right up. I wiped the cobwebs off and got started on the tasks I needed to get done.
First up was to pull the cluster and swap speedos again so that I can send off my best one to Tom and have it rebuilt. I'll send that out on Monday once I get back to Milledgeville. I put the junky one back in so that I can at least have the cluster look complete even though it doesn't work  After that, I turned my attention to fixing the lights on my tach. The lights went out over a year ago, but I finally took it apart to see if I could make it work again. The right LED would only work if it was pressed on, so I think something broke inside the little LED. I ended up trying to solder the attachment joints and that didn't make it work. What's the next best thing? Run some solder to jump the busted LED and boom, one side works again. I only need it to light up to 5k anyways because once I'm past that, I'll start floating valves. When I put the new under dash wiring harness in a few years ago, I never hooked the trailer brake controller back up. Turns out it was real simple to do, so I hooked it back up and I think it still works. I don't have a trailer with brakes to test it out on though. Once I get back to Milledgeville, I'll give her a much needed bath :metal: |

Saturday was the Deep Roots car show in downtown Milledgeville, so of course Frankentruck had to show out
The 71 Ford next to me has the Ford version of the 3 speed overdrive trans. Pretty neat to see some other trucks with that transmission in it. It was a great time being able to hang out with Jhrusk and get some inspiration from his new build for mine. Frankentruck might get a couple inches chopped out by next summer |

Nice pictures as usual Christian. I went to that car show about 4-5 years ago. It is always good. I will have to make it back one of these years with my truck.

Got my speedo back from Classic Gauge and Cluster today! Tom went above and beyond to restore my speedo and odometer to working condition at a great price that any college student can afford.
Tom replaced the old odometer roll that had stuck with a good, working one, replaced the gears inside the odometer that were chewed up, repainted the speedo needle, and checked to ensure the speedo was calibrated correctly. He also repainted the back of it to make it all look nice. Check out Classic Gauge and Cluster on Facebook or TBONE1964 on here for all your cluster repair and restoration needs. Tom does great work, and I'm stoked with how it turned out. I haven't had a working odometer in Frankentruck for years  It's so nice to have the entire cluster back to working condition. |
Re: Frankentruck
Glad you got it working Christian!
The speedo in my 65 has been acting up sometimes so it looks like I'm going to be having my own fun with speedometers sometime soon lol. |

Re: Frankentruck
I still haven't had a chance to figure out the overdrive solenoid seal leak so I topped off the oil level this afternoon. I also noticed that the lockout cable was not going the full range of motion which was causing the trans to not stay in lockout when I wanted it to.
The cable sheath was too long, thus not allowing the cable to pull the lever far enough to fully engage lockout. All this time, lockout was only partly engaged whenever I was using it. Good thing I didn't use it much! To remedy this, I had to loosen the cable at the trans, pull the cable back far enough inside the sheath, then cut back the sheath of the cable with a couple different types of pliers I have down here at college. Now, the lockout cable functions as intended and I can run the trans in lockout without worrying that it will pop out when I don't want it to. Sorry, I didn't take any pics, didn't think to until it was all back together |
Re: Frankentruck
Took a round trip to Augusta, GA this weekend. Frankentruck ran great with only 2 issues.
The parking brake cable snapped off right at the handle. I had noticed that one of the strands on the cable had been broken pretty much since I got the truck, but Friday night the rest of the cable decided to let go. Good thing I got that lockout cable fixed, because without it, the truck will roll forward if I were to forget to shift into reverse  Issue 2 is that the aftermarket wiper arms bought years ago don't do crap once you get to around 70 mph. The blades need to be replaced anyways as the mounting part of the blades have lost one of the 2 rivets that hold them together. They are currently operating with some of the twisty ties that you get from power cords when you buy new electrical products. I'll be doing the Cherokee wiper arm swap soon, just have to find some time to go get the parts needed. Other than that, it was a great trip :metal: |
Re: Frankentruck
Of course, the trip to Augusta burned over 3/4 of the tank, so I had to fill up today. Now that I have a working odometer, I was able to easily calculate my MPGs.
I drove an indicated 215.7 miles from full tank to fill up. Frankentruck drank 15.03 gallons this go around, so that puts me at a solid 14.4 mpg. But, my speedo runs about 10% slow (To fix, I would need to pull the overdrive unit off the back of the trans and swap out the drive gear so it would mesh up with the correct driven gear). The adjusted miles driven is 237.3. Divide by 15.03 and get 15.8 mpg :metal: :four::hot::bann::clap: |

Took another trip in Frankentruck this Saturday. Drove up to Winder to meet my parents and cousin at a BBQ joint for lunch, then rode over to Athens with them for the last UGA home game of the season. Of course, Frankentruck did great, and the Igloo Kool Rest kept some leftover BBQ nice and cold for the remainder of the trip.
The worst part of the trip was the crappy wiper blades. The good news is that I have 2 Jeep wiper arms in the mail to upgrade to a more modern blade. Hopefully I'll be able to swap them out over Thanksgiving break. Also, I cleaned the steering wheel and dashboard a good bit this weekend with some cleaning wipes I won at the car show back in October. The steering wheel is white again and feels so much smoother and more comfortable. I'll get some pics in the daylight soon |

On my way back home for Thanksgiving, I stopped by at a local junkyard and scored some needed pieces for Frankentruck. Got a set of vent windows since mine are in poor shape. Also picked up some decent original reverse lights with part of the wiring harness.
The even better score was the 64-66 radio delete plate still sporting the original paint and some super nice clips. Overall, was a great time walking through the yard, and I'll definitely have to go back to get some more stuff |

Here's how I run the lights even when driving the truck around:
I used a power inverter thingy from walmart that plugs into the cigarette lighter. The package says it can handle up to 2 strands of lights which is what fits great on a long bed. I've been using this setup now for 4 years, and the only issues that I have are the occasional pieces of tape that come loose and the power inverter not liking cold weather very much. I took my last final for the semester today :four:, so I'll be headed back to Woodstock in the morning. Going to be a driver helper for UPS again because it pays well and means more money for truck parts . After Christmas I'll be working on Frankentruck some and taking more pics along the way for y'all. I've been neglecting some things that need to get done, so now is the time to do them. Merry Christmas y'all! :chevy: |
Re: Frankentruck
Congrats on the schooling milestone. You will be finished before you know it. Merry Christmas.
