Re: '63 GMC Project
I took the truck to have the temporary exhaust replaced with some stainless tubing today. On the way home I passed by a police car going the opposite direction and when I looked in my rearview mirror I saw the dreaded police u-turn. I kept an eye on my mirror and my speedo but I wasn't speeding so I figured he was after me for a (very) loud exhaust. After about a half a mile I turned into a gas station, using hand signals because of course my signals stopped working, and he followed me in. When I got out of the truck the officer called me over to his patrol car and I was sure I was at least getting a warning for something. It turned out he just wanted to check out my truck because he has a 64 that he's s working on.

Thats awesome..! About 9 years ago when I had my 54 Chevy truck that was weathered blue with "Grumpy's Used cars & Speed Shop" on the doors, we were on the way to Columbus for Goodguys. Im rolling about 73 down the highway with wife following in her blazer. She kept yelling I was going too fast...lol I ended up passing a State Patrol and saw him turn and burn towards us. So I slowed some and he got almost but not even with me and stayed there for 3-4 miles. Then slowed and snuck in behind me and turned lights on. So my wife is pissed and yelling thru our portable radio's. He comes up on passenger side and says... Going to Goodguys? I say yep!, and he stood there asking about my truck for 10 minutes. Never asked for license or anything. Purely wanted to see my truck up close... That was best experience ever being pulled over... |

:lol::lol::lol:
That's awesome too! Now if I could just get the hot lady cops to pull me over to check it out... |
Re: '63 GMC Project
I did a quick photochop to add some 20s and while I was at it I tried out putting yellow lights where the high beams are, sorta' like an older race car. I like the rims and I'm on the fence about the yellow lights. What do you think?

Re: '63 GMC Project
love the rims, but with that awesome patina I think I almost like the idea of wide whites on your black rims more.
same on the yellow. I like them knowing what they are, but at a quick glance would they just look old and aged ? I think the cleanness of your chrome/front end, etc just makes the patina that much more badass. |

Re: '63 GMC Project
Thanks for the input guys. Don't get me wrong, I love the looks of the steeies too but as it sits it's not exactly ideal because of the scrub line. if I get a flat in the rear my lower link/shock mounts will drag. Plus the tall sidewall doesn't do much for the handling. Maybe if I can find some nice 17" or 18" whitewalls and steelies...:metal:

Re: '63 GMC Project
im with these guys!! i would say keep the smaller wheels but i just really dont like big wheels on old vehicles but you do have some good reasons to want some
i think some chrome smoothies would look great on ur truck to match the the clean grill and bumpers. as for the yellow lights i think it would be cool to have all of them yellow..i really like yellow headlights |
Re: '63 GMC Project
I think your truck can pull off both style wheels. You could keep the steelies and just switch it up every once in a while for a different look. Nice build by the way...

Re: '63 GMC Project
Thanks! I'm really leaning towards the bigger rims because If I need to remove a rear wheel now I have to remove the top shock mount bolt to let the axle drop enough to monkey hump the wheel out of the wheel opening. Which means I would have to jack it up from the side of the frame. I'm thinking a bigger wheel would make it much easier to get the wheel out and still be able to jack it up at the axle.

Re: '63 GMC Project
how about some of those 20" steelies?
|
Re: '63 GMC Project
Definitely a possibility. Any wheel I get will have an old school feel to them.

Here's what I'm talking about. 2nd one in a month. Luckily the first one was short and only went into the treads and didn't pierce the tire. Not so lucky the second time. It was on the edge were I was told it couldn't be patched because of the roll of the tire. I ended up just getting 4 new tires because I was affraid the whitewalls wouldn't match (and my front tires were kinda chewed up from rolling much lower than my alignment height).

Here's a couple of random shots: the first is it sitting in my driveway after cleaning it up a little and the second one is it sitting at ride height waiting to be put away after a cruise-in and dinner with some friends.

Re: '63 GMC Project
Love the Hot Wheels truck/packaging. You might want to try some Photo paper for a glossier sheen. There are even sample packs available that provide a variety of different surfaces so you dial in the best selection without spending a fortune.

Here's a pic from the Salem Super Cruise in Salem, OH...
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91...0623175749.jpg All the trucks are owned by board members here: thelowone (94 Sonoma), me, street steel (63 Suburban & 78 C-10) and grumpy (the one on the end that isn't a chevy;)) Here's a pic from a cookout I went to... http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91...p/IMG_7287.jpg |
Re: '63 GMC Project
Got back from Good Guys Columbus a little while ago. Man it was HOT, like 104 with a heat index of 110-112. My truck handled the heat pretty well but it wasn't in traffic very long, maybe 45 mins leaving the show Friday afternoon. Best part of the show was my buddy dropping some coin on parts for his 67 C-10 so he can take it next year. Once again I didn't take a camera so no pics except a couple cell pics of a crazy cool 50 Chevy that was parked outside of the restaurant we ate at Friday night.

Now that I think of it I believe it was a 54. This thing had so many cool little details. It had leather covered fenders with random stitching that carried through to the rest of the steel body, big honkin' wrenches for pedals and it was laid out. The best part was the owner autocrossed it and won his class at a previous event

Re: '63 GMC Project
I wonder if the owners of that leather clad 54 and the fire truck are fans of Steam Punk genre?
Sure seems to show some inspiration there, unless the 54 is born of Frankenstein.... |

Re: '63 GMC Project
I've been watching this truck a lot. I love it. The patina and original color is nothing but perfect. If you'd sell it and I had the money I would bring him home right away. Maybe one day we booth are ready. 'til then enjoy every second of it and ride safe!
I vote for some wider WWs. |
