Everything looks great! Where did you get the kit to cover all of the hoses?

knomadd 03-29-2014 10:45 PM

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

Thanks Rob! I don't believe there's a kit out there. I liked the look of the Painless wire wrap and found a company by the name of Tech Flex that had similar products, but more to choose from. They have some pretty cool stuff. Check them out. I just bought all the different sizes from Amazon, and used heat shrink tubing to keep the ends together so it wouldn't fray. I used the split style Flexo F6 for nearly everything. It likes to open up on tight bends so for hoses, I would use something like this or this

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

I finally got the (temporary) electric fans installed. I've got one fan wired up to a thermostatic switch and both to a manual override switch (each fan on its own relay). Eventually, once I figure out where to install the second temp switch, I'll have both fans wired to thermostatic switches. One at 185 and the second at 195. That might have to wait until I replace the fans with a fan/shroud combo that fits the radiator. As it sits today, I've got about 1" on each side and 1/2" top & bottom of the flex-a-lite dual fans.

I have one of the head ports used for the gauge temp sender and the other head port used for the 1st temp switch. If you look in the pics above, there is an opening in the intake available for the 2nd switch, but it's directly below the upper rad hose. No way I can make that work as-is. Thought about a swivel type thermostat housing and a different upper hose, but not sure yet. Wondering if anyone has one and if they seal okay. I'm worried it might leak. Anyone have any experience with a swivel type water neck?

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

hmmm... I've got a leak that I'm not really sure where it could be coming from...http://www.en.kolobok.us/smiles/big_...one-s_head.gif

I went with a co-worker to lunch today. It's raining, and fairly hard, so lots of water coming down. We leave the restaurant to go back to work and as I'm pulling out of the parking lot, water comes out of the glove box! :uhmk: He opens the glove box and sure enough, there's water inside the liner. He pulls all my paperwork out and uses a rag I had in the cab to soak up some of the water. We get back to the office and I pull the rest of the stuff out and soak up as much water as I can.

So here's where I'm stumped. Where's it coming from? The top and sides of the glove box liner are dry. No trace of water leaking in from above. The windows were up and the glove box was closed. There's no water anywhere on the top of the dash or on the face of the glove box. The only thing I can think of is the hole from the antenna cable, which wasn't filled when the PO deleted the antenna, but the lack of water-soaked upper glove box liner has me baffled. Any ideas?

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

I noticed the same thing in mine the other day after washing it last week (I just got the liner put in the glove box) - I opened the glove box and it had a small amount inside the liner but the top was dry. The only thing I've figured so far is that maybe the PO didn't seal the windshield well, and it's dripping onto the top/side of the liner, running down the side, then seeping inside the liner in the bottom corner where the bottom piece and right side of the liner overlap and are stapled together (the reason I believe this is bc i could tell where the water was seeping in between the two).

I hadn't thought of my antenna possibly leaking? At some point I'll pull the liner back out, put a small bucket in its place, and slowly pour water on the antenna and windshield to try to pinpoint....

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

Probably from the drip rail and down the A pillar, from there it drips onto the top of the glove box liner and gets inside..

Thanks for the suggested areas to look at guys. I know the windshield leaks under heavy rains while driving (so I'm told), just never experienced it myself. And I didn't see water anywhere else inside the cab, just the glove box. Strange.

Wow, it's been a while since I've updated this thread. Been busy with work and life lately. Plus ordering new wheels for the GTO has put a big damper on truck spending.

I've done a little over the last few weeks, like install the precision window felts and sweeps...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psszvg6prk.jpg

Painted the vent trim rings and installed one on the passenger side...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psu0mya93w.jpg
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps7qhxsnmi.jpg

And I just installed some van side markers...

That's it for now. Caught a virus last weekend when I was doing the A/C vents, so I haven't been up to working on it lately. I'll probably get back out there this weekend though. Hoping to get the vents installed and maybe the hose routing figured out.

Thanks Kyle!

It's been a while since I updated. I finished the vents a few weekends ago, here are a couple pics of them.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psybzwgkom.jpg

Please ignore the hack job on the radio hole. Whoever cut it must have had a few too many to drink by then. :dohh: I've got a billet plate to help with that. That's one of the items on my list to get mounted. Since the stereo is out, it will happen before I put it back in.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps6d1ad88e.jpg
I used a dremel tool for the rectangular vent hole. It didn't take long, but it made the dremel so hot that it stopped working for a while. OOPS! It's good now though.

I also figured out where I was going to mount the bulkhead on the firewall on Monday evening. I drilled the holes and didn't have time for pics that night, and haven't been out there since. I'll try to get the bulkhead mounted tonight and take a couple pics of it.

I'm getting the A/C installed.... slowly. Here's my plan for the engine side of the bulkhead.

I got the main component installed for the Vintage Air Gen IV unit. This took some time since I decided not to use the hard lines from the kit. Hopefully it doesn't leak, or it will be heck trying to get it back out and fixed. Here's a pic of it installed.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

In an attempt to recurve my hood (it's too low in the middle, making it drag when opened, and the sides are too far out) here's what I did...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psmug0uubm.jpg
It sat like this for 3 days. It helped a little. The sides look to line up a bit better, but I'm now seeing that my hinges are worn out. I have to push on the back corners to get it to sit flush with the cowl. I need to shove the hood toward the drivers side to get it to line up with the body lines, but that won't be difficult.

I may need to do it again for a longer period of time to get the hood to remember where it should be

Haven't done much since I got back from vacation. I did just placed an order for a PBFab fully adjustable trac bar. I don't know if the rear moves much with the shorter CPP double adjustable bar that I have on there now, but the more I've read, the more it looks like I really should have the longer bar to make the rear stay close to the center during suspension travel. Plus, I really like the PB stuff.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

Good luck with your build. You're probably closer to your end goal for your truck than I am. I've got grand plans to tear it all down and build a drop member frame, raise the bed, repaint, etc. Since it's currently driving, and I don't have the space or funds to tackle a complete tear down and rebuild, I'm doing it while she's running. I probably won't modify the frame during this round of building her.

 I guess I'll be spending more in the long run to do this truck twice!

BigDaddyV 07-22-2014 10:17 AM

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

lol I hear ya. Mine is already tore all the way down, and I'm about to go get a frame with PB extreme front and rear dropmembers and mmw front arms. That will put me well into the game.

looks good. How hard was it to get the bulkhead fitting to attach to the sure fit lines? Do you have some pictures? Thanks,

Rob

knomadd 07-26-2014 04:25 PM

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

Rob, I didn't use the sure fit lines. I used eaton/Aeroquip EZ clip fittings to connect to the bulkhead inside and out. I only used a portion of the sure fit line for the heater hoses under the dash. I wound up running a bead in the line and clamping the EZ clip hose with a worm gear. I don't have pics of it, unfortunately. Seems like every time I work on it, I forget about pics until it's too late.

I'm currently trying to get the wiring and engine side done. Ran the duct work last night and the interior electrical this morning. I'll see if I can squeeze a camera in there for you.

Rob,

Here are a couple of pictures for you. This is the best I can do with it all installed.

This is what the rest of the sure-fit line looks like with the EZ Clip hose attached.

Here's the duct work...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps99b70d8c.jpg

I had to pull the grille off so I could get the hard lines from the condenser and drier installed. That was a disaster! :banghead: More on that later.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pse1baf24a.jpg

Here's how the lines looked after I got it all installed. I still need to do the heater hoses.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

On to the disaster that was the grille removal...

So taking the grille out wasn't a problem. That was pretty easy. The problem came later when I had to make a trip to the hardware store for longer bolts to install the fittings on the compressor.

As I'm pulling out of my driveway (I bet you can see where this is going) I feel something weird under the car, so I stop and get out to find the grille UNDER MY FRONT TIRE!!!! :barf: :dohh: I get back in the car and finish driving over the grille and get out to assess the damage...

It doesn't look too horible in this picture, but the emblem is cracked and the two lower bars have broken away from the rest of the grille
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psd67a3610.jpg

Here's the ugly shot..
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps75b1fe7f.jpg

The sad part is that when I leaned the grille against the car I told myself I'd better move it before I leave so I don't run over it. An hour later and I ran over it!

So, now I've got the excuse to replace the entire grille with a chrome outer and a new billet inner... $625+ later... Oh, and truck freight is another way to rape you out of some of your hard earned money. Classic Industries was cheaper with their 15% discount, but freight was $200!!! :cuss:

I wound up cancelling that order and just ordering through Classic Parts.. I hope their shipping isn't that high. I saw $70 added to the overall cost (included in the price listed above) but the fine print said shipping charges may not be exact. :whine:

Just goes to show that it's best to listen to yourself when you think something might happen and just MOVE IT BEFORE IT DOES HAPPEN!!!

Man Duane sorry to hear about the grill. That sounds exactly like stuff I do all the time. The VA install is looking good. I sure liked mine today in the 100* weather.

knomadd 07-27-2014 08:41 PM

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

Thanks Mike. I couldn't believe it at first, but when I finally left for the hardware store, I thought to myself "Go figure! You're overdue for something stupid like that." Things happen... I guess I can look at the bright side... I get to replace the poor fitting grille sooner than I expected.

The VA stuff is pretty cool. I love it in my GTO, so I knew I wanted it in the C10. I did the same thing with the EZ clip stuff too.

Just wondering if you ever found the source of that leak that found its way into the glove box?

Also I'd really like to know what brand of headers you have and if you can use standard length spark plug body's and not stubby plugs.

Nope. It hasn't rained hard enough since that day, and I forgot all about it.

I really can't tell what brand the headers are. They aren't marked anywhere I can see. They're shorty block huggers, but that's all I can tell. Yes, I believe I can use standard plugs. I'm pretty sure that's what's on it now.

Do you think maybe water is finding its way through the cowl into glove box? It sure is in close proximity there and we all know how well they like to rust out haha

knomadd 07-30-2014 09:09 AM

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

Hey Matt! Nice to see you're back on here. Sorry to hear about your power stroke.

It's possible the water was coming from the cowl area. Although, before I installed the A/C unit, I couldn't find anything that would suggest water was coming in from a specific location. The only thing in the general area, that I noticed, was the antenna hole (still open). I guess it could have been coming in from the windshield gasket, then dripping down the dash.

Not sure if this will help or not, but I took my cowl off and fixed the antenna grommet, then took the glove box out, and poured water slowly. I didn't find anything around the cowl, and the A pillar, antenna, and drip rail didn't seem to leak, but when I poured water on the bottom center of the windshield, on the weatherstrip, it leaked through the seal, onto the dash inside the cab, then ran over to the right side where there is a small drip hole, then onto where the glove box would be. I really hoped it would be the antenna on mine :waah:
Keep us updated on finding the leak, I hope yours is an easy fix. I didn't see any rust holes under the cowl when checking mine out, but maybe I missed something. I'll be keeping a rag under the seat for when it rains and when I wash it for a while. BTW - your AC setup is sweet, it's really motivating me to get mine up and running!!

knomadd 07-30-2014 04:06 PM

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

Thanks for the info. I've never seen any water in the glove box, or inside at all any other time than when I drove it during a HEAVY downpour. My brother in law drove it in the rain once and noticed water dripping from the top of the windshield seal (nothing in the glove box), but that was at highway speeds so it could have pushed up under the seal and dripped in. I'm thinking it's probably from the windshield seal somewhere. I guess I could always have the wife spray different areas with a garden hose to see if I can find where it's coming from. I can't see rust anywhere, inside or out, but that doesn't mean I don't have a hole somewhere that I don't know of. If I ever find it, I'll post it up.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm hoping to finish up the A/C this weekend and get it charged next week.

The grille came last Wednesday...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psc69e460c.jpg
It was packaged really well. It had wood bracing along the top and bottom length of the box.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psb387a298.jpg
Even had foam on the ends and a bunch of bubble wrap (foam, then small bubble, then large bubble wrapped around the entire grille.)
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps2fe7c7c5.jpg

Sorry for the dark pictures, but here's the grille
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps6a1d7d20.jpg
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psa925238b.jpg

With the new emblem resting in place
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps2da8673d.jpg

Still working on how I'm going to mount the emblem, but I think I have it figured out. Just need to get some pieces cut and bent/drilled, then mount it. I'll take some pics of it later.

Getting the A/C charged on Wednesday at a local hot rod shop, and having them cut the trailing arm cross member for exhaust pass through so I can extend the exhaust toward the back some more (to be done later).

South Coast Rides on SH36 in Rosenberg. Been dealing with them for a few years now. I've had them do a few things for my GTO. I do most things myself, but if I don't have the tools or the time to do something, I'll try them first. I'd trust a rod shop over a chain for an a/c charge on my classics any day.

Dropped it off at the shop this morning. Getting the A/C charged (hopefully there aren't any leaks) and having the holes cut for the exhaust to pass through the trailing arm cross member.
