Sorry so late, just got free. Back to the cab body. You can see all the rust between the upper and lower parts of cab. To keep this from coming back, I will spot blast a spot about 5" long between the body pieces. Weld it solid, then grind a line back in to match were the two pieces were attached. This took awhile, but I still have the body line and don't have to worry about rust.

Pic 1 Don't have a close up of repair, but you can see there is still a line. Here I have stripped the old paint, etc. Added some filler on the top piece.
Pic 2 Another view, still need to do filler work on the corner patch panels. |

After blasting I painted the bottom with POR, immediately after painting I sprayed a thin layer of primer on this. That way you can sand and paint without coming off.

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
I was wondering if you'd do anything with the rear cab seam, guess I just needed to wait and see....
How much work did it take to clean up the seam after being welded? I did something similar, welded it and ground it somewhat. I'm thinking of making a profile template off the doors and trying to get a similar profile on the back wall (since the doors never had a seam to begin with). I tried to make sure my welds were hot and quick so as not to build up too much material in there, and I think it worked pretty good but I'm trying to get some insight into what it'll take to make it look good....and yours looks good. Thanks! |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
I'm still amazed. I always wanted to do the removable top mod to mine, but didn't have the guts! Or skills but you've got em. Looks great......more pics!!

At this point you are thinking is this guy crazy or what, paint the axle flanges. Well my thinking is if I take everything apart and put back together, it has given me the chance to check everything, retorque all bolts, etc. I feel a lot safer the first time out and it's just time and a little paint. If something does go wrong, it's easier to work with clean parts. This is NOT a show truck, eventhough I go to many local shows, I drive this thing everwhere it goes, it's NOT trailered, and it's been put away wet many times. This is just how I build my stuff. Enough BS

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Thank you so much for the excellent ideas from your build. I love some of the little custom touches you did. I also love it that this truck isnt a trailer queen, so stop being so modest, that truck rocks and I hope my truck turns out half as nice. I work on my truck every night and then before I go to bed I get on the computer to see what you have posted next, can't go to sleep till I see what you have posted so that I can come up with mods to mine based on what you have done. think I'll do like you have done and post my build after I finish it.

OK on with todays post.
Inside of dash painted. The dash was painted to match the Ultra-leather in the interior. Paint shop mixed paint, then I had them add 50% flattening agent to the paint. In makes it real thin, just add hardner and spray. Put on about 4 or 5 light coats. Easy to keep clean. |
