Wow! I've been watching that yellow truck race on Friday nights for a while now. I just happened to start reading around and seen this. I basically grew up at the Baytown race track, back when it was still just Houston Raceway Park. I was there last Saturday at the bracket racing, but can't remember if I seen that truck there or not.

Well ,yesterday was the season finally for IHRA . Im on the bracket team with Sealy as my home track . Next weekend is the final for NHRA i am currently 13th in points and need to make the top 10 to get the points payback . We race Saturday and Sunday , then Sunday night we run race of champions which is a ladder of all seasons winners for king of the track . Hoping for the best

Got an update on the heads $750 for the repairs to the hurt head and a clean up around the guides with a basic flow improving polish job and full valve job . Should be don in a couple of weeks . Plans will be to put these heads on my current motor with a single plain intake and my plate . That will stop the exhaust leaks . and i will start next season with this combo . More than likely with a delay box in the truck .

Re: New project

Ran a 7.0 index race since the season was over and i was actually able to do well . I was number 1 qualifier with a 7.008 . My lights were in the .050s on .4 proo tree . 3 rd round i creamed the guy on the tree , but it spun when it came down from the wheelie . I drove it out to a 7.24 loss . Slicks where bald and to the cords . Just thought i had enough left to run on more race . Cords showing . Oh well .

About done for the season . Division 4 bracket finals this weekend in Ennis, Texas . Of coarse i have to change up the truck to try and footbrake it at this one race . I am putting the slicks off the S-10 in it just for this weekend .

Plans for the winter are to buy a block and a set of pistons and build the "new" motor that i broke first of season . Looks like im going around 410-412 inch and 11.5-12 to 1 . Also swapping to E-85 with this change . Alot depends on the rules for next year . Im going to ask the Div 4 director at the bracket finals how the 2015 rules are going to be and build from there . Either No box or footbrake . I ought to put a delay box in it and move to electronics for the weekend .

I got the heads back from Ricky at slick ricks racing heads in magnolia . He did a great job on the repair . They look like new and have 3 new valves and valve job . Damage for head repairs $690 .

Re: New project

Div 4 bracket finals , ended up finding my footbrake spot . Long story . I ended up brending the brake pedal away from the gas peddle , adjusting the rod into the master cylinder , and geasing that pivot point , readjusted the bars and went for it . I was late at first and was moving around on the launch rpm . I finally found a good spot at 2000 rpm . I could stage the truck with the brakes and they would hold . I also figured out the bump in pretty quick as last year i won a race off the footbrake . Ended up with 3-.036's and a .035 . Lost on a double breakout as i only had 11" to back up . Pretty tough at 100 mph . The more i loaded it up on the converter the less it smoked . Guessing the rings were seating in . Good outting none the less . Had a great time anyway .

Guess the next question is if we will have a footbrake or NO-E class next year . That will decide how things go . Definatly going to concentrate on the S-10 and getting to know it during the winter teardown .

Re: New project

Been more of the usual . Passengerside axle seal leaking . Pulled the rear fenders and mounted a set of 29.5 x 10.5 slicks . Need to remount the rear fenders . Been working alot lately . Not much drag strip time .

Things are not looking good for 2015 . They posted the calender and it looks like i would need to take 16 days of vacation just to run the season . Not good for me as i dont have that much time . we will see . Last year they posted the sechedule , then changed it which worked in my benifit . we will see .

Re: New project

Well the girls were in town and im a pian for them when shopping . "You might as well go racing" . Loaded up and went to the nitro jam deal in San Antonio . Had a good weekend . Ended up breaking out in the final friday night by .004 . The sun went down and the track was less than stellar . Truck started to drift to the right and by the time i noticed i was out of the groove and headed to the centerline . As soon as the driverside tire got out of the left groove it made a pretty hard left , i drove it out and never lifted and it landed right back in the groove and took a set back . I thought " no way i can break out now" well i was .004 under .

Saturday was kind of a different day . Alot more cars and more of a show . Track was better Got dowen to 8 cars and had the truck in a position to be .00? on the tree . Their wasw a young guy on a street bike that was killing the tree . during the draw i was in the last 3 cars and got a challenger , but the rush was on and left the set on kill set up in it . Should have just taken some out . I was .002 red and dead on 8 with a 6.90 dial to a 6.908 . I was my own worst enemy and it was my race to win .

I ended up getting into the money both days and had a great time . Came close to free racing . Not bad for the first time out on 29.5 trues and a newly adjusted chassis .

Well we have a test and tune in late febuary , but it will be here and their races until the season opener in March . Motor is fairly fresh , trans was freshed higher up on the page . Belts and cert are new. Could probably use a set of front tires . Im pretty much ready .

I bought this Camaro and got a decent offer on the S-10 , so it will probably go . I have a nice pile of parts to build a street car class Luv if the right body comes along .

Hummmmm..... I don't know what that means . Just thought id throw up an update . I am having Eric @ horsepower Innovations build me a carb for next season . I am also upgrading to an Aeromotive pump and regulator to keep up with the extra needs of E85 . My big cartridge filter will be going away for a stainless screen type . I also have been testing local pump E85 and it shows to be 85% dead on . We will see how this works out . I have exhaust temp meter and im looking into a o2 data logger .

Re: New project

Quick update : I got the fuel system lined out . It is now set up for pretty much anything . It is -10 from the tank to the filter . Filter is on the pump inlet . Pump is Aeromotive SS which is good for 1000HP . -8 from pump to regulator which is a Aeromotive return style . -8 return to the tank and 2 -6 lines to the carb . Fuel pressure is rock solid . Started the truck up on pump gas then drained the tank and did the swapped the new carb . Got the fuel pressure lined out @ 7 psi . I am really happy with results although I didn't get to test Friday night due to a bent pushrod and broken rocker stud . I have no ideal what happened , went bang and lost #4 . Started with compression test which yielded 85# . Pulled valve cover and found this .
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...ps5beaaad7.jpg
Did a leak down while I had it down and all cylinders where low 90's at 100 psi. I had worries I got a head gasket or a valve , but I got lucky . A buddy of mine had a stud and we were able to pull the piece out of the poly lock . Bought 2 new pushrods and got it back together . Just kinda set the carb to the best running settings . Plans are to get it on a chassis dyno with an o2 or temporarily set one up and test at the drag strip . Pretty happy with the whole swap . Went up one heat range on plugs cause it was acting like it would load up a bit . That seemed to stop with hotter plugs . I added a good bit of initial timing also moving the curve to 20 with all the timing in by 2000 with a total of 36 . This took a lot of cam lope out .

Well , went to start it today and it bucked . I pulled the plugs and it had water in a couple of holes . Looks like it got both head gaskets . Heads are off and going to be surfaced tommorow and gaskets are on the way . Also bought a wideband for it and will be moving the gauges around so i can see them better .

One of the heads was pretty bad off . Had both surfaced and got some real head gaskets . The ones i used when this motor was thrown back together were cheap out of a builder kit . Anyway got the heads back on and torqued today . Have the plug out so the pan can drain tonight . Trying to finish up assembly tommorow .

hotrod 80 02-13-2015 12:05 AM

Re: New project

Thanks for the tips . I run a hydraulic roller . well I got the head gaskets replaced and everything is back together . Changed the factory dash , as all it did was temp gauge , oil light and alt light anyway . set it up where the back light for the volt gauge excites the alt . This means when I turn on the key the volt gauge lights up til the truck fires . then the back light goes out . I will know I have a charging issue it the volt gauge is lite after the motor fires . I added a A/F meter in Lambda scale . Mechanical temp gauge vs the factory unmarked gauge . Oil pressure gauge vs light I had before ( never paid attention anyway) . The speedo doesn't have a cable , but this dash has a lot more info .
Added a carb pan and sealed it to the cowl hood . Lot of off season work .

First test session I was a bit lean at wot . Added 4 jets sizes to it . Had full intentions to test tonight and run 7.0 tomorrow . The Ford decided to kill a battery ( actually both ) by the time I got battaries it was to late to test . Im just going to test in time trials tomorrow . We will see .

Thanks , I know a lot of you guys are snowed in or have bad weather . My original intention was to head to Temple . Texas to a small place called Little river raceway . It is kind of in between Austin and San Antonio , sort of northwest of college station . They "rained" that event out due to the forcast . We have had rain a lot this week and Sunday it is slated to rain again . Maybe we can get this 275 event in . Track will be cold for sure .

Re: New project

hotrod 80 03-17-2015 09:39 AM

Re: New project

Opening weekend . Took it out Friday and it was still lean . Added 4 jet sizes and got it a lot closer . . Had a Divisional tech guy their to tech Saturday. He spent 20 minutes on my truck and confiscated my jacket due to a small pin hole in it . I need a battery box even though its in the bed and my roll over vent on the nitrous fuel cell "wasn't sufficient" . I will be removing that cell and pulling fuel off the new aeromotive anyway . 125-130 cars their Saturday ,I went 5 rounds and lost in a good race . We were .004 apart on reaction time and the truck slowed down .015 Mov was .013 . Sunday 80 or so cars and I lost 4th round in another tough race . My better reaction time by .002 he was dead on 6.420 . I had .002 to fit in and broke out by .006 with a 6.804 on a 6.81 . Really close racing .

hotrod 80 03-18-2015 11:37 PM

Re: New project

Well , was just looking things over today and found out why it broke out . All my fault . After the last round i won , the A/F ratio was showing lean and i added fuel to the idle curcuit to correct what i thought was a lean condition at idle . Turns out the collector nuts had fallen off the driveside collector and the last one was loose . This is the side the O2 sensor is in . I tightend tis up and was way rich at idle . Last week i had those big 80 series SUV Flowmasters pulled off and a set of Borla XR-1 s installed this saved me about 60 pounds and it sounds great . Guess i learn everyday . I also drained the tank and wiped out the bottom . Also disassembled the strainer and cleaned it / checked it for material due to the new hoses .

Heading to Evadale Saturday for IHRA if it doesnt rain .

Re: New project

http://evadaleraceway.com/content/?a...nstance_id=755

Got this coming up this weekend . My engine builder is coming out with his brother in law to watch . He has a super gas Vega . They are talking about letting me drive the Vega second half of the season and shaking it down for 2016 and running some divisional stuff . We will see . Truck is actually running good . I pulled the rear axle apart and changed the rear bearing o rings . cleaned up the rear brakes , Changed the valve covers and fixed the leaks and pulled the stand alone fuel cell and nitrous to spray on my current fuel choice . As I posted earlier I swapped the 3" SUV flowmasters for Borla XR1's . Between that and the fuel system I lost 100# 70 or so out of the middle and 25 or so off the front . Thinking about swapping the hood as it has to be 30# . 25 more off the front would help a lot .

The motor I broke last March @ Sealy running IHRA is going back together . The heads are rebuilt and you cant tell which head had the damage . I have all the parts and found a nice 4 bolt block . I figured all the parts would build a nice 396 and just buy a shortblock later over 400". I had all the parts in a pile so why not . I was looking at the new Racetech pistons . I really don't have preference what name is on the piston as long as it clearences and is the correct material . Think we settled on JE gas ported with a low tension ring set . Total seal top and a Nathier ( spelling ) second with 12-14 # oil . This will be a full skirted piston for stability . We are within 8 grams weight wise . These will be flat top and 11.8 to 1 . should balance out nice for reasonable cash . Maybe weld a keyway here or their . Dropping the fogger down to 175ish . Ready for the new motor , but my junk stuff is at 6.80's now thinking 6.50's , which will take me out of the index racing unless they change the classes . We will see .

Looked over the weekend points NHRA and was double checking . I am listed as 7th . Points are wrong . I am tied for 5th . Working towards a track championship and a Ironman this year .

Re: New project

Less than stellar outing . Last divisional race I had a flat in the rear . I took the slick to the tire shop and they wouldn't patch the tube . Said it was a Liability . I gave them a new tube to install . Second time trial and it is going flat again . I threw 1 spare rim in just in case . Won first round , but coming back and the lights are dim . Battery failed . % years old , guess it was due . Pulled one out of the ford . Tree'd the guy 2nd round and the truck didn't run the number . It ran a 6.93 on a 6.83 dial . Oh well Back to the drawing board .

This week im looking into batteries , trying to line up a dyno session . I replaced the old fuse block with a modern blade type and ordered pistons and rings for the "old" yellow motor that came apart first of last season . I have all the parts in a pile in the garage and this thing was complete minus pistons and a balancer . 4.XXX ( whatever the block will clear up at I haven't asked ) x 3.800 stroke . I have already located a block and it is being machined . The pistons are gas ported with totals seal top ring and Napeir ( spelling) second ring all low tension style . This is surposed to be free horse power . They are being built flat top also so compression should be in the high 11's . The new fuel allows this increase and it is still $2 a gallon . Looking forward to the extra power .

regan wilson 04-01-2015 08:42 AM

Re: New project

Sounds good , you will like the Total Seal rings. Them suckers aint cheap though. Thats one reason I didnt want to do a complete tear down on mine last year.
