I tried to make this a "budget build" but I obviously dumped that idea a long time ago. Now I'm just trying to build the nicest thing I know how.
That is me to the letter...

man you have got a lot done, I have been looking for that ac vent for a while! I heard someone talking about trying to use 67-72 ac vent balls and center one, not sure if it worked or not! the wood engraving is awesome, are you just going to clear it, an how are you going to attach it??

Re: My own build thread

Thanks! I'm still not sure on the vent balls. I haven't had time to go see what the paint store has but if they don't have anything chrome I'm going to paint them gold. I'll come up with something.
The wood piece isn't the actual piece, the guy I had make this made it slightly too big. So that piece is now on my desk :).
But the new piece will be treated, the guy is going to stain it a little and I'm going to clear it when I repaint my hood. There are 3 holes where the plastic piece was, I'm not sure if that is original but I thought about glueing dowels or I may just use some thin double back tape.
Here is a pic of the the glovebox door installed. I just wanted to see how it looked.

That wood piece looks awesome man !!
Your question about the 3 holes in the glovebox door is correct, they are stock mounting holes for the trim piece that goes there.
IMO I would go with at least 2 dowels ~and~ use the double sided tape to mount that.

In one of my future builds I am going to do a wood trim interior, I have always thought that looked pretty classy (up until I found out later that most of it all was a decal laminate that only looked like wood grain....)

Thanks you! You don't happen to know if anyone remakes the nuts that hold the A/C controls on do you? I've looked everywhere, they look like threaded washers with two slots cut into them. I'm missing one... Grr!

If I could find my old one, I would send you that nut, I know which one you are describing.

Re: My own build thread

Thanks Everyone! I ordered some 60-62 Covette nuts, they look the same but I won't know if they work until they get here. I hope they work, damn things were 9 bucks a piece...
Anyway I've been working my butt off but everything I put together seems to need something fixed.
I went to install the new side windows and realized the wheels were broken on the passenger side window regulator. After some research I realized you have to buy the whole regulator... So I searched some more and found a guy that used some shower door wheels from lowes to fix his jeep. I figured what the heck I might as well try and it worked! For 4 bucks I fixed my regulator.
Here is how I did it.

Drill out the rivets holding the old wheels "or what's left of them" out.

This is the broken wheel on the regulator.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...psiwai3evs.jpg

Here are the shower wheels. There are a few sizes so pick the ones that fit the closest, you have to shave them down to fit.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...psmzwh1prf.jpg

This is how much smaller I had to make the wheels, you also have to make them thinner by sanding on the side with the nut and bevel them so the slide into the tracks.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...psi0avby8c.jpg

I use these sanding disks on a high speed grinder, they work very well.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...psj6ykmslg.jpg

Here it is in the track.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...psjf3vjapo.jpg

Stack a few washers under it to get the correct distance for the tracks
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...psawrlyojq.jpg

This shows the original wheels and the new ones I replaced them with
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...pshhnttgpv.jpg

You may want to buy some screws that are 1/4-1/2 longer than the one supplied because once you stack the washers behind the nut the original screws only catch a few threads. I also used red lock tight so everything stays together.

Here's the door panels on with the door handles. I polished the handles too :D, yes in going to paint the screws but that's going to wait until I get I on the road.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...psaqrte2l1.jpg

Here's the door glass in, I'm really happy how tight everything fits with all the new gaskets. It rolls up and down very nicely!
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...pslqfgqkxw.jpg

For my project tonight, I get to figure out how to reassemble the newly re chromed GMC grill. I'm converting the lights to H1/H4s but they will look like stock lights until I turn them on. I rebuilt the headlight buckets and painted them black. Installed the new springs etc.

I was just informed that you CAN buy the rollers from Classic parts... And I thought I was being cool. I guess this works too but I would probably order the wheels.

It's coming together nicely! I'm really pleased with the chrome but I may have to add something under the grill to fill in the space a little. I'll have to see what it looks like out in the open.

Re: My own build thread

I didn't see your post until now Boondogs72, that would be great! Thank you so much, are you sure?

Here's a few new pics, I washed her and cleaned her up. I'm so pissed, the place I bought my tires from stacked them on top of each other and I thought I could scrub the markings off but they aren't coming off. You can't see it in the picture but it's very noticeable... I don't know what I'm going to do about it. I know the tire place won't take them back, I've had them for over a year... O well, I might try this white wall paint and see if that helps.

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...psdeockbfb.jpg

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...pssluzvkfu.jpg

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...pslxnyul05.jpg

I installed all the A/C stuff under the dash and tore apart the heater box completely. I'm repainting the whole heater box and installing a new heater motor. I figured for 35 bucks I might as well do it now because the old one doesn't move as freely as it should.

I also ended up ordering a new radiator because by the time I buy a Trans cooler it's not much more to buy a new radiator with the coolant lines already in it.

This week I should hopefully finish up all the odds and ends and start running all the wiring. I need to go buy the material for my seat so I can reupholster that "I also do upholstery".

Re: My own build thread

Have you tried the whitewall cleaner w/bleach to see if it'll remove the skid marks? Also....haven't tried it yet, but I'm told using some 600-800 grit will remove the marks also. I have a buddy who uses baking soda/water 1:1 ratio...let it sit a few minutes then use a soft scrub brush. And last but not least....the magic erasers (cleaning sponges).....have seen quite a few guys use them at car shows.

zippeay 03-18-2014 02:21 PM

Re: My own build thread

I tried the white wall cleaner, simple Green, and this pink paste stuff and scrubbed it down with a scotchbrite pad and nothing worked yet. I'll try the other things you mentioned, hopefully something works. Thanks for the tips!

Re: My own build thread

I can see what you are upset about.

There is a YouTube out there where a fellow widened the white walls of tires by putting the rear end up on stands, with a sander and the wheels spinning. I dont see why the sand paper wont work for you too....

Here is the video:

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll deal with the tires when I get the rest of this finished.

Last night I finished refurbishing the heater/condensor box and installed the air tank and the box with te compressor and valves in it.

Have you tried "lightly" rubbing the marks with some lacquer thinner? It should take the marks right off without removing any white as long as you do it lightly.
