Couple more. 3rd pic is from the Pontiac Assembly plant. They used GMC too.
A board member says that Pontiac used the trucks in pic 3 to transport workers around on the property from building to building. |

A few more pics of the assembly process from Tarrytown 1959/1960
1.These show Pouring of the hot metal from the cupola into the ladle at the foundry. 2.Machines finishing the outer ends of the rear axle housing for wheel bearings and brakes. 3.Removing of cylinder block casting from the sand mold. 4.Machine finishing the cylinder bores on v8 engine blocks. 5.Engines being run under their own power in the final engine inspection test. |

1.Inspecting the ring gear and pinions prior to assembly
2.Forming, sizing and coining (stamping) the wheel rims. 3.Coil spring for rear ends are compressed as frame moves down the line. (may have been a different process for the trucks...this is a car x frame). 4.Chassis assembly is complete and painted wheels are added. I have many more car pics from the assembly line, but thought that some of these process's hadn't been shown here yet that I could find, and thought there might be some interest in them. |

These are some cool old pics I found.

Re: Nostalgia - Pics in Time.
They look like some old NC pictures. Tons of tobacco grown in these parts of the sandhills...and a little corn shine still being made too.

Re: Nostalgia - Pics in Time.
Great pictures. I was thinking the same thing. Looks like North Carolina, or a bordering state to it.

Re: Nostalgia - Pics in Time.
I've heard that there is some up in VA and WV too....of course I've only heard that. I have some family in Mingo County, up in Williamson, WV and i've got some decent shine up in those parts a few years ago.

Re: Nostalgia - Pics in Time.
Man I love them ole pics with old cars and trucks. that's why I love watching them ole t.v. shows from when I grew up in the 70's. wished I could find some of my dad's pictures of his 71 GMC 4x4. my uncle had a lot of 50's and 70's trucks I remember a 69 he had that had a 396 in it, had the engine built up a little it was awesome, he also had a 63 Impala with a 409 dual quad 4 spd posi, sounds like a song don't it. I know this is worthless without pics, so let me do some digging.

I sure thought that was the Astoria-Megler Bridge....shot looking north, across the mouth of the Columbia. But it sure isn't. Very cool anyhow. |

Re: Nostalgia - Pics in Time.
That looks like an old Peterbilt 352 cabover and maybe an old Kenworth W-925 conventional with the tanker trailers.

Naw, that conventional is a Pete too. Not sure if it's a 359 or earlier

Here is a picture of my father's 1965 truck in Fairbanks, Alaska, vintage 1968 to 1970. If I remember right that is a Corvette in front to the right, it did not move in the winter. The temperature was probably 30 to 40 degrees below zero during the daytime, colder at night. In the background you can see the ice fog being made by the city coal fired power plant down on the Cheenah River, along w/some home heating furnaces. I think we could burn 500 gals of heating oil in 2-3 week period during cold spells.
Thought pic could make some feel better about cold weather we are facing this week, just think you could be in Fairbanks. The truck did really well in the cold. Les |
Re: Nostalgia - Pics in Time.
For the Fairbanks crew we lived on Gilmore St., off Airport Road toward the river.

Was in the 30's here this am and the old truck fired right up. Really thinking about seat warmers when I do the seat again.
Thanks for sharing the pic and does look like a vette in front of the truck. Cool pic and history. |
