Really nice looking panel there.

That truck looks great. Do you ever bring it up to any of the events around Atl?

We wrecked out the wifes 58 GMC fleetside so we can get all of the welding done on the cab over the winter

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Dropped the hood on, close but look like fit even from the factory where it curves down into the headlights was very off. Also the back curve does not match the radius of the cowl. It will stay that way I am done cutting and rewelding. Still fighting the passenger fender, tonight I am going to make sure the frame is level side to side and take some measurements because the radiator brace on that side is wanting to be shimmed up more than the drivers side.

mock up of rear suspension. still need shock brackets made, it is almost a rolling chassis again. one problem rear frame is tweaked hopefully that will be fixed next week. slow progress but progress just the same. started boxing in the frame, all parts are just tacked on for now final weld after all mock up is complete.

Drove down to one of the local car shows today, about 60 miles round trip. It was a cool 50 degress at 10:00 am, but was still a fun drive.

First pic is my son and his friend in his 48 F**d rat rod pickup. 2nd is a "selvie" with the top off enjoying the ride....Jim

Finally got the passenger side fender - door' cowl gap right, what a wrestling match. Porta power and application of various body tools to relieve the tension so it would settle into place. Now back to final body work and blocking on the fenders and bed sides. More photos in the build thread.

well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after a long time sittin' indoors i decided to finally get to rebuild a 350 chevy motor i have had for some years , i seem to remember it only had 27;000 miles '
well after takin it apart i saw that the crank had some scoring - rod bearings were not worn evenly and the lifters had very small pits in them - so much for a '' gasket and reseal rebuild .
so i guess my new song of the day is ; ''HI HO HI HO mo money in the motor we go ''
well at least the block aint cracked like my head is

'' that;s the way it is ''

Thanks for taking the teasing Jim. You're a good guy.

Orrie, those gaps look great. The part that would bug me? After it's done no one other than someone who has done it themselves will know how much effort it takes to get 50-60 year old sheet metal to fit together that well. Oh well, YOU'LL know.

The thing that always irritates me about working the door/panel gaps is that most folk won't know the truck didn't fit together that nice when it was new on the showroom floor.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I've said the same before too. GM poked the pooch on design and stamping die QA for the TF trucks. The door radius at the top front and center around the A pillar is never the same radius as the body stamping. On 58-59 the back top of the fender usually will not fit to the cab with out some relief with a 2# ball peen on the inner cab radius where the fender brace hits (lots of guys "fix" the dents only to beat them back in during install). And the bottom door step sill profile is not the same as the fender profile and the fender hangs about 1/8"-1/4" lower.

GM guessed that the farmers, delivery drivers and service techs that mostly got these trucks just wanted a door that would shut, not open when you went around a corner or over a hard bump and not leak when it rained. I think maybe a little more fit and finish went into the GMC and Chevy deluxe cabs, but the stampings were the same.

Considering I drove it 25 years with worn out hinges and my kids learned real fast how to grab and slam the passenger door shut on rough roads (still smile when I get the visual of my 25# daughter straining against the seat belt out the open door, laughing, reaching for the handle), I'm happy with the way its turning out. Dark green paint is going to help too.

I agree the bed wood and strips look great. Is it pine or fir and what brand/color stain did you use? I really like it.

PS: It almost looks like textured black paint; is it?

I like those bed strips with that color of bed wood. It makes me think of cabins and ski resorts around Tahoe. I doubt you were going for the rustic cabin look... haha. Either way... looks great.

Thank you, it is yellow pine. I used Rust-oleum natural cherry stain with Cabot Australian timber oil to seal the wood. I used a heavy primer on the bed strips and again Rust-oleum flat black paint.

I did use a propane torch to bring out some highlights in the wood before stain.

The brakes worked very well ...

all the tools in the cab few out the Felony floor right on to the pavement
including my quart bottle of brake fluid

I like your color choice on the stain, makes me wish I went with a stain of some sort. I just finished my bed up as well, Red oak w/spar eurathane.
I too think that the bed looks too nice for my truck now. :metal:

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Had something pretty cool happen yesterday. Guy came by to get an old leather brief case I had for sale. I was doing some woodworking in the driveway with the garage door open. He saw the truck and ask if he could look at it, and really got into it, running his hands over the body work, looking up under the dash, etc. All the time telling me what a great job I was doing and how beautiful the truck was. Made my day. I do most of my work in relatively solitude, it was good to have someone who knows what he is looking at say its good.

Honestly it looks great, I love the idea of different flavor's when it comes to wood type, stain and sealers! I like the idea of a new wood bed with an olde patina truck adds class at least to me. Nice job looks great!

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

No pictures but took pictures of my truck as it sits so can take them to an appraiser and get an appraisal to take to the MTO and get the truck in my name. I pay tax on what the appraiser says it's worth. In Ontario with vehicles older than 20 yrs, an appraisal has to be done. Better to do it now than when the truck is worth much more.

Rainy day so good shop time. Nothing sexy just cleaning original bolts on the wire wheel and going to tackle the leaking trans pan. Did find some fender to radiator brace shims in the bolt box that will help with the hood fit, thinking maybe the factory found that the hoods were stamped a little bit wide at the front??.
