I was pleased to get a spare pair of panel/Suburban rear bumper brackets today. These things are like hen's teeth and they're not reproduced. But fortunately I found a set on Ebay that were being described as pickup bumper brackets. I recognized the difference and bought them for about half their value. They'll sit on my shelf along with other hard-to-find panel/Suburban-specific parts.

Early in the week I sanded my inside doors and painted them, new stainless lower door seal and new weatherstrip. Then yesterday I installed sound deadening material in the cab and laid down new carpet. Have not yet glued down the carpet, as I need to get the Lokar shift boot installed, among other things.

Still need to finish weatherstrip around the rest of the each door (I did just the bottoms).

im am currently chasing the leaks in my a/c system. even at 10pm its 90 degrees in my garage and the humidity about 97%. I checked all the hoses I could reach then tried to drop the unit. the hoses and all the crap are holding it but I was able to drop it a few inches to check the lines under the dash. one was fine the other a little loose. felt confident I had fixed the leak put a vacuum back on it and it leaked again. its leaking quick. im going to go back out and soap all of the connections and put a vacuum back on it. maybe it will show me what im missing. its annoying to be so close and having a stupid issue. its a leak. I can fix a leak. I just cant find the stupid leak. headed back out.

okay. well that didn't work...or maybe it did. I put it on a vacuum for a few minutes. turned the truck/ac on full, added Freon with uv dye. spilledthe uv dye. wiped the motor down. added the Freon until the compressor cam on. let it run and hit it with my uv light. I did find a very small amount on the threads for the #10 hose with is the low side. tomorrow I will remove that end and re-lube and seat it. i guess its progress.

The wife asked me what I would do with the money, I said find another 56 and fix it up the same way. To which she replied, that's pretty stupid, after all the time money and effort to get it the way you want it, to do it again..... and I won't let you do another one.
How very true!

SVR, yes it did put a big smile on my face after he told me that he hasn't seen one with the attention to detail and done so well that he really wanted it.

after 3 weeks my a/c in installed and holding vacuum. none to soon either. its 103 today. its on its final evacuation now. so in 2 hours my cool truck will be even cooler. while screwing around I slipped and poked a small hole in a rubber fuel line. luckily its just a 3 inch hose that connects the regulator to the hardline. will get another piece when I get out today. so close guys. im fighting back a grin because im afraid it will jinx me.

UPDATE- did a 1 hour evacuation and then let it sit and hold the vacuum for an hour per vintage air instructions. came back and it held. we are go for Freon. love when stuff works...which isn't often.

I added "door" to my search, and this came right up. You can do that too, put something like door in the search and it leaves it wide open for all door parts. If you put door latch then ALL you will get are auctions with those two words, where you never know someone could spell latch wrong or put "lock" instead or something goofy like that. But if you put simply door, then you will get everything with door in it, and if you do the "newly listed" and you check it every day, you won't get thousands of auctions you will see the ones just listed.

Here's a door lock :D

In 1973 I bought both latches new plus both strikers for my 48 from the local (MCGregor TX) then Chevy dealer's parts counter that had them in stock. Paid less than 30.00 for all four pieces. Inflation sure has set in.

Drove to a neighboring town for a local festival. Traffic was too chaotic there so went to McDonalds instead for a Sausage Egg McMuffin With Cheese.

Not usually a “car show” guy but we always enjoy Cruising McMinnville. I usually just go for the cruise but I entered my in the show yesterday and won best Chevrolet

If you’re anywhere nearby this is one of the best shows/cruise around. Usually about 300 car for the show and a cruise down 3rd street after the show

I dumped a load of compost and manure at a friend's house, and diagnosed a leak from my cowl vent to a split hose under the dash:

Thanks, I was really surprised there were some cars I thought were much nicer.

My excitement quickly went away yesterday when I decided to take a lunch run in the truck and noticed a pool of fluid.

After hours of messing with my brake proportioning vale I finally found that my brake light pressure switch was leaking around the top. The worst part was trying to get help at an auto parts store. I had to look it up on my phone and show him the part number. Still wanted to know what year, make and model.

1963 Buick Skylark, Advanced Auto part # S199 for anyone else that has a similar switch.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

I worked at a parts counter for a year once, the thing I learned about things like this is simply tell them the make model and year of the PART you are looking for.
I personally liked to hear what it was in and all that but to look up the part (without a number) you simply need the make model and year of the PART. Many people at the counter don't have the love of all the goofy stuff as I do so they get confused with the stories and it's best just to "tell them what they need to hear."

You're right, sometimes I forget how many parts they are dealing with. I used to buy all my parts at Napa because there were several people that worked there into old cars. I just need to go in prepared in the future.

Yep, it’s one of the unfortunate side effects of computers. Anyone can look up parts who can type in a year make and model but sometimes you need somebody who knows cars.

That's the thing, just simply say 1/4" fuel line and you should get it. We need to forget our anger towards the person behind the counter and simply give them what they need to get the part.

I didn't get mad at the girl as it was a little comical to me. The cabinet with different spools of hoses that you pull out the length that you want was right behind her. She thanked me for pointing it out. I don't get mad at a clerk at a store that I will probably need to go back to. Actually, at my age, 78, I try not to get mad at anything any more.

Sometimes we fail to realize how knowledgeable we have become with all our age and experience. Things we know and assume everyone knows are all new to younger people.

Instead of going to the car show at the Blacksmith on Labor Day I went for a cruise and ended up at an old feed mill that I often pass in my travels. They were closed for the holiday so I was able to take some pictures with a rustic backdrop. This was my favorite shot of the day..
