Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Finaly got out back to get some real work done on my truck today. then realized it was 100+ out there. Still managed to get the hood removed
http://i579.photobucket.com/albums/s...823_132153.jpg
Then got the back and the interior totaly cleaned out. Theres a transmission just out of view that I found buried under tires and such in the bed. The bed wood is gonna have to be replaced. Also found the drive shaft.
http://i579.photobucket.com/albums/s...823_130109.jpg
All of that doesnt seem like much but it was.. Managed to get a good look around so I know what patch panels I have to order now. Really wasnt as bad as I thought on first inspection. Also managed to get some measuring done on the fenders to see how high I need to go with the patchs there. Then decided the entire 15 inch patch panel is going on when my new fender braces arrive. Thankfully my dogs were a huge help and managed to stay out of the way the entire time.

Was taking my first attempt on wrenching on bed bolts to take off the Custom fleet side on my '61...One came off super easy and the others well....not so much.

Ended saying eff it and took a grinder to the back two bolts at the rear of the bed...

Came off like a charm....Tomaro going to complete the task, need to remove gas tank first...previous owner put the factory behind seat tank in the bed in a big a$$ metal box( I thought is had a 30 gallon tank when I first bought truck LOL)...

Going to throw on a step side short bed, that I need to get fabbed, I got for free out here In sunny san diego...

Stripped all the wiring out of the engine bay and cab except one little bundle. Cleaned all the sounddeadener out of the cab as well. There's some rust but really the rust is no where as bad as I first thought.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I finished the install on my fuel tank and then removed everything to get ready to spray rust encapsulator on the frame and other stuff. I found out my rear axles were toast so instead of redrilling for 5 lug I went over to Dutchman's and ordered 2 new axles. Also cleaned up the brake backing plates and the rear end for paint. Hopefully I'll have the rear frame and components painted by this weekend.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Oh......by the way I ripped up my wood bed on my '61(dont worry not orig. but plywood) and it was a bear......

Amazing how easy it is to remove, ahem get a bed ready to be to be removed....

A couple truck buddies of mine came over and to my dismay I cant use my frame, previous owner "chopped" tail end off the long bed chassis,

to put "new" bed on so one of em said they'll give me a '62 frame(aka roliing chassis)....I got some cool friends :metal:. Will be way easier to do the swap on I think:chevy:...So my '61 Chevy will be riding o n a '62 GMC frame..

Anyone know if there were major differences on the GMC from the Chevy???

Evaluated mounting options for the new steering wheel. While I know it will be a bit of work, I think it will be well worth it in the end.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...8-24185025.jpg

It will be in almost 2" from where it is in this picture.

Jimmydean what's the wheel out of, and is it tilt?...Vernski:uhmk:

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

The wheel is from a 2008 Cadillac CTS. At this time, I am not using the column, just the wheel and clock spring. I need to make a cover for the middle still, too.

The column that goes to this wheel is not just tilt, but telescopic as well. It also has heat and cool for the wheel (tied to the seats in the car, not the truck). I still have all the hardware to do the heat/cool in the seats if I want to try something with it later. But for now I just want the buttons to work.

Vernski,

Here's my '61 truck as it stands now....Gonna remove the paint ultimately and spray some flat blue that I've seen on other trucks on this forum, rust zero "safety blue".....

I was going to start on the removal of the front clip but dont have room to store it while waiting for my "new" frame to come('62 gmc)
Tell me what you think....Oh by the way I want to drop it like you did your's :chevy:

Thanks el_bole
P.S. Notice the chop on the rear, frame was shortened to customize rear...thats why my bud says I need a "new" frame

Yeah I see the plates 7B is Bonner county and the next county north of us enjoy the spuds. The sheet metal on your truck looks straight so that's a plus. I got the 3" dropped coil from DJM they have the same spring rate as the stock springs and I can't tell much difference from the stock one just sits 3" lower. Do you have coils on the rear? There is a variety ways to lower the rear, one is Jeep coils another is trailing arm blocks. You can google for DJM online and look over what they sell for your truck...Vernski:metal:

I was stationed at Coronado Island for a while. Loved the area and hung out in Imperial City a lot! The lamplight district downtown (micro-breweries) got me in the "mix" with MPs a few times!!! :sumo:

A couple times I dont remember how I got home coming from there

What kind of paint did you use on your stepside? Is it just primer?
Im thinking of painting mine "safety blue(by zero rust) and painting the top half of cab cadillac escalade blue(kinda of metallic)...

Going to hit the hay because I got to face a class full of know it all teens in the AM....Wish I use a baton like an MP to at least threaten them :sumo:,just joking.....

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I decided to swap the engine out of ol'blue.. So that ment I had to remove truck #1 (the green one) from the main garage and move it to the rear garage ... Sounds simple right ? well first I had to remove the acumulated junk from around it since I had lost interest in it bout a year ago .. then removed all the junk from the rear of it and proceeded to rearrange all the body panels and place them in the back in an organized way .. next I had to hang a temporary gas tank off the inner fender , (since it is missing the fenders and doors , seat and gas tank ..replace the distributor I robbed for truck #1 and it fired right up and I drove it to the rear garage ... Now I have a days worth of cleaning before I can start tomorrows project ...

That is always a good thing when they roar to life after sitting for a while. I have decided to build a new motor for my truck. I have never built my own motor and I have no idea what I want (except 400hp), so we'll see how it goes. Pray for me, everyone!

I wired in a 5 pin trailer plug on my 64 a little different to do here than your 4 pin in USA over here we have to our trailer brake lights seperate from our turn signals. Took me a while but I figured it out turn signals wired to front ones and run brake lights straight off the brake switch. Got me thinking though.

Lakeroadster,

Yes I am taking it back to stock.....I very happy with this truck, it is very solid.

As my chassis been cut I am looking to buy a short bed frame to throw truck on plus I have a short bed stepside that was given to me.

A guy out here in Cali wants $250 for a complete rolling SB chassis...What do you think?

Thanks,

i think i'd do that for 250. you could powder coat the frame and replace all the bushings maybe add a newer front end with disc brakes...all while still driving your truck....sounds like a winner to me.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Bobby,

Thanks for the info...either way I am going to end up spending $.

A buddy of mine has a frame he is willing to just give me (62' gmc longbed).. but then I got to look for a bed that will fit....prolly $150-250 for a decent bed....

If I kept mine(chopped and all) I would have to pay someone to fab the SB stepside into a LB, at least in front....Probabaly $200 +JOB!

So I think you are absolutely right Bobby, what the rate for powder coating a frame?

Thanks,
Roberto:chevy:
