Looking around my garage what did I see. A nice sandblasted and painted 66 manual steering box. Most important it was very tight. 15 minutes later it was on my 64. I forgot I had it I thought I chucked it. Steering is 100% better. Still have a off balance issue coming from the rear. Went to swap my tires I can't get my rear tires off without taking my bed off.?? I think I'm going to rotate my driveline 180 degrees and see if that helps. Then I'll swap my tires.

Getting my rear tires off with a 72 rearend is a challenge. It's 3/4" wider on both sides and a 4" drop it's nearly impossible.

Messed with my drive line. Figured out I can't rotate it 180. It's a two piece, it only works one way. I did notice the the u joint was'nt seated very good it had a big notch out of it. Moved my carrier bearing around alittle. You can really move it much. Went for a test drive. What ever I did it's much better now steady as a rock till about 80. Good enough for me. All my driving is in town.:metal: I was hoping there was a trick to getting the tires off? Oh well I'm use to take the bed off.

Dave, are your tires stuck in the rear fenders?? I have to use at least 2 jacks and jack up the frame and the rear axle at the same time. Once the wheel is loose you have to let the rear down until the tire just squeezes out. Sometimes at about a 45* angle. It's a pain. I have 295's on my 'burb. Sometimes you have to let down or jack up the opposite side to get the right angle on the rear axle.

Re: Daverods project 66

I jacked the axle up, put stands under the frame and let the axle hang. Then I unbolted the wheels and tried to take them off. No go. I did'nt try jacking the other side of the axle up. Maybe tomorrow.

Same here. I'm going to take off a 1/2" of the fender lip to make it easier. That or roll it under. There's about 1 1/2" of lip so 1/2" shouldn't make a difference as long as the braces are still welded.

i wonder how hard it would be to make the bed a dumpstyle bed , hinges on the back a locking device (treaded rod a big ring and a wingnut through the bedfloor maibe ?) and airbag to lift it ...... done

I'm thinking these are going to catch on.:lol:I like the Porche. Maybe they will make a 4-5-6 kit.

Re: Daverods project 66

not yet worked on my 52. maybe this weekend. I'm hoping if I trim the metal I'll be able to get them off. Now I know why some people have fancy dump beds.

:smoke: Did a lot of head scratching. Somthing so easy for some. I don't things don't line up right? Maybe the wrong pulley on the crank? Does the belt for the steering pump go around the crank?

Re: Daverods project 66

Looks like your PS pump could be farther back to line up better with the back pulley on the crank . How does the alternator line up??
mine has the belt on the crank back slot , water pump and the PS pump. The alternator drives from the front slot on the crank and the front slot on the water pump.
Use a straight edge or a wood board to line things up. I will clamp a board to a pulley if I am fabbing up brackets and want to stay in alignment.

Its back as far as it goes.Alt. lines up with front grove. The power steering pump has a rear bracket that mounts to the motor mount. It's were it needs to be.??? More head scratching.

Re: Daverods project 66

The problem is that you have a power steering pump and brackets for the shor water pump. Your engine has the long water pump, and the alternator is of course in position for the long water pump. You'll need to get a PS pump for a long water pump application....'73 and up truck, or '69 and up car. With the long water pump, the PS pump hangs from the water pump from that boss below the lower bolt. Then there are brackets that bolt to the front of the head, and over to the front header bolt. There are some variations to that, but that is the basics. Probably best if you could get everything from a donor vehicle.

I also have this pump but I couldn't figure out how to hang it. I had two different engines and things kinda got mixed up. I'll try again in the morning. Hope you have some of those brackets made Capt time gettin closer.

Hey Dave, I had the same problem when lining up my pulleys. I went to an old junk yard and took all the pulleys off a 283 truck that looked origional and got home and they didnt line up on my motor. I bought some shims off ebay to set the crank pulleys out about 1/8 inch and then eveything lined up perfect. I can get you some pics if you want.

Ran outside and snapped a picture for you. Here is how your long water pump power steering pump should mount.
