Drove the '69 home on Thursday eve... could not get out of low gear in the TH400. Made it to the house with law enforcement behind me. Realized on Fri that the hose had disconnected from the modulator. No ticket-

Finally got the deluxe heater removed from the '66 on Sat. Found the 20 year supply of mouse bedding in the fan area... will prob get 1 more MPG this summer with the extra 20 pounds removed.

I feel like I got a lot done today. I finished bending up my trans cooler lines...what a pain in the a$$. Spent way more time planning than bending, all the planning paid off though. I got my A/C lines figured out finally. Just a couple of hundred more dollars on fittings and I should be ready to charge the system with freon. Got my radiator hoses put on. I got to thinking...a few fluids and a battery and I could start this bad boy up. Maybe next weekend.

Working on my new cab so I cut off the passenger side of my rocker panel to replace it. Now I have to go buy a welder and being a newbie who has never welded anything, this should be like going to hell in a handbasket.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

We all have to learn some time...

What welder are you thinking about?

For sheetmetal, the smaller 110V welders will reduce the amount of burnthrough. I'd really go with a MIG, that fluxcore stuff sucks, or a TIG if you have the money...

I have a Hobart 135 that has worked great for 15 years for me. I think now they only build 140's

From HomeDepot this is the complete kit for 280.00 just need to buy a gas bottle. True we all have to start somewhere, but looking at what I have to do, im not feeling this. Dont want to spend money if im not interested in welding.

Once you start sticking metal together, it opens up the door for all sorts of new projects. You'll be able to make, build, and fix all sorts of cool things.

This was my latest, winch bumper, tow bumper, and rocksliders.

I do have all my rocker panel replacements, just need to find the time and get to work on them.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

VDog, that little welder is just the ticket for learning. It will be great for body panels and light duty stuff, but like Ross just said once you start you'll find all kinds of jobs to do.
Start with .023 solid wire (this will minimize the burn through) and a bottle of 75/25 argon/CO2 mixed gas and you should be fine for the body panels. To prevent burn through make a series of tack welds strung together (this is called triggering) but only after you have made a bunch of tack welds all around the perimeter.

Finally got my evaporator plumbed and bolted in place...what a pain (I say that a lot lately). I have all of my air conditioning lines and heater hoses installed too. Pretty good for just a few hours after work.

Driving to work it was right at 32 degree's.
It's the coldest it has ever been.

Found a few more wires to replace on the back half, done, Wired my sending unit and fuel pump (waiting for relays), almost done. Took my gauge cluster out and started installing my Autometer tach (in the center hole. I'll finish that tomorrow and get it back in.

Thanks guys!! After I cut or butchered that panel behind the rocker that I was not supposed to cut, I got discourged. Do I use a cutoff wheel to remove the rusted parts or do I use a sawzall? Again I have no direction so im just going at it.

RossRinSD 04-17-2012 04:15 PM

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

I like the cutoff wheels, seems more precise, use the thinnest ones you can find. Sawzall, air powered body saw, spot weld drill, air chisel, BFH... You'll use it all.

Did you get your patch panels already?

You can use a bunch of big magnets to hold stuff together for welding. A big hunk of brass behind the weld will support the cherry and sink heat out of the surrounding metal while you weld. And flapper wheels for dressing your stitches work great. Go slow, too much heat in one spot is gonna warp the panels.

Next thing you know, shaved door handles and chopped tops.

I was going to get them today, but Jr was not feeling good today so I will go tomorrow. The thing is, I really have no interest in welding. Thus why I was going with one with no gas. I know everyone said gas is best, but my problem is I dont want to spend the money on something I'd rather pay someone to fix. Just me I guess.

I installed a new hose from the windshield washer reservoir to the pump. The old hose failed every few months because it would split apart at the pump connection.
