Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Well its time for the next phase on my project. I had a guy interested in a domain I had and we could never come together on a price. Finally discussed trades...next thing I know my truck is changing from carb to efi!
Just as well....the wife wouldn't ride with me with the Holley keeping the exhaust rich. Says she smells like shes been riding a motorcycle when we get out of it. So...here we go! The plan? Remove all the carb related gear....carb and intake, MSD box and harness, the low pressure fuel system, etc. and then install new fuel system, efi intake and related components, efi harness, sensors, etc. then the plan is to find a 4L80-e to upgrade to. So here we go with a bunch of parts again. how it sat: http://www.lsxtrucks.com/images/albu...l_IMG_2155.jpg http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2156.jpg once cleaned up (and pained maybe) this is replacing the carb intake: http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2683.JPG and the harness I got (with a pre-tuned e38 ecm and a tcm)....is AWESOME! http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2675.JPG http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2677.JPG http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2676.JPG http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2678.JPG if you're wondering its a custom Nelson Performance stand alone harness...not a cut up OEM harness. This thing is sweet! Labeled up, shrink wrapped, new relays and fuse panel, and even has that fiber weave covering that looks sort of like s.s. flex hose but black. I saw the custom pegged up super long table they're made on so I'm guessing its going to fit great. I have a walbro 255, GM filter/reg, and lots of new AN fittings and s.s. hose being delivered tomorrow. |

A moment of silence please........... Ok were done. Cant wait to see if it runs any different. Would be perfict time for a electronic trans....

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
this is gonna be sweet!...
|
Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
thanks guys
not a TBSS as thats for catheral port heads. This is a LY6 which is like an iron 6.0L L92 ...instead of aluminum 6.2L. |

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Kurt,
Did you get the harness direct from Nelson Performance? If so, how much? Also, what does it need for a accelerator? I have an LQ9 from a 2005 Denali and trying to find a nice harness at a reasonable price.... and I read the e38 ecm doesn't use a separate module to control the accelerator pedal… |
Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
mcm...Yes the harness came direct from Nelson Performance. It uses a late model accelerator pedal assembly that just plugs into the harness. Not sure where or what it came from as Nelson Performance provided it. I'm wondering if they have to be removed from a combo pedal assembly? Pic below
As far as the harness price (or the pedal, etc) I can't say as this was all part of a trade we made. http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2684.JPG |
Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Well I guess I'm overdue for an update. Got quite a bit done but didn't have the pics uploaded yet....so I wasn't going to post until I did.!
So...here's carb related gear tear down. Followed by fuel system removal, clean up, intake/tb installation, and getting wiring harness laid in. pulling it apart. MSD gone, regulator and -8 AN fuel line gone, etc. http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2680.JPG intake pulled and things wiped down. http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2689.JPG cleaned up, painted and installed efi truck intake and TB. http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2697.JPG http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2698.JPG drained and dropped the tank and installed fitting for fuel return line http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2711.JPG http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2712.JPG walbro 255 pump and GF-822 GM filter/regulator and -6AN s.s. hose/fittings prepped for install with 3/8 NPT to original "primary" fuel filter. I'm keeping the -8AN from the tank to the Trick Flow canister filter. Almost wanted to just connect them with a double female getting rid of the hose...but figured weight/vibration/time would cause an issue... and with a little hose in between things are isolated. http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2713.JPG harness layout/install to follow... |
Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
the "stand alone" custom Harness has all the wire protected with either shrink wrap or that nylon braided wire tubing stuff in various sizes. All the connectors seem to be quality connectors. New 4 circuit fuse panel and multiple relays. 1st class all the way.
He left the end unterminated for the accelerator pedal...so it would be easier to pull the the firewall and I terminate it later. He also provided the pin out of course. Other wires are for DIC/OBD interface. http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2710.JPG Drivers side harness all but disappears. Still need to install coolant sender and connect, plus air intake with MAF and connect. http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2715.JPG Passenger side laid in great and everything fits great but the MAP sensor. Allen is going to check with Jon (one of his employees and the harnesses daddy ) to determine the best route to correct. http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2716.JPG Still have to decide how I'm running pcv/breather hoses...then will likely upgrade them. Rest of harness is laid down the drivers side fender. I'll mount the ecm and tcm to the inner fender (may build a small box for them) and the relays to the fender. If I decided to go the other direction with it I'd need to run it inside the cab...not something it needs or I wanted to do...so drivers side it will be. I need to rewire a bunch of stuff that's still there... plus finalize the harness install. Should look real nice when complete. http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2714.JPG Still looking for a 4L80e/85e to replace the 200-4r. I'm getting quite a stack of parts now... between the 1st build from a '68 body and a '72 chassis and drivetrain, then the 383 upgrade, the carb'd LSx build, and now the carb'd/efi swap. Here's just a few pieces of it..... http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2691.JPG http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2681.JPG http://www.lsxtrucks.com/gallery/alb...l_IMG_2694.JPG still need to install the new fuel system and fuel/return lines. O2 sensors the air intake MAF on the way and to be installed. Also picked up a TB seal and new injector o-ring pack just in case... I think everything is lining up to start it for the 1st time on "efi" this weekend! Just need to find a brand new 4L85e for like a grand and everything would be great! |
Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
You do amazing work my friend. Looks great. Cant wait to here the differance between carb and factory efi.:metal:

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Thanks.....and me too!

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
I have had crazy dreams with set of twins in it......Turbos not what everyone else was thinking.....Wife actually caught me looking at factory efi setups. My poor fast efi cant do boost...sad day.

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Looking real nice.
What kind of paint did you use on the intake? I want to paint mine and think yours looks real slick. Kim |
Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Looks good Kurt. I'm working in Mckinney now, maybe I can stop by one of these days and take a look at it in person. Last time I was there, the whole truck was disassembled.

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Thanks Kim. Its just some left over Rustoleum High Performance wheel paint in their "Steel" color which is a silver with some sparkles in it like a metallic. Then I hit it with some Valspar gloss clear enamel to protect it.
Yes it was Bobby! Its been put together...and pulled apart again! At least this time its just some changes and not a complete redo. Still haven't gotten to paint and body yet. Yeah...just let me know when you want to swing by...as you know I'm always here! |
Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Lol man if you keep making changes in the setup at this rate you'll be able to "speed" tear down a motor faster than any of us.
|
Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
LMAO! Well......I'm think I'm trying to make up for years of suppressed hot rodding. You know...wanting to try out everything!
My truck does have a long story regarding all that its been thru since I got it! Well...this changed was unplanned. I'd be keeping it carb'd if this "trade" offer hadn't come up. I thought I was gonna get in cheap...then I bought sensors, hose, fittings, and more and its adding up quick! That pile of new and barely used parts (along with a Holley Street HP 750, 2 sets of LSx p-rods, set of stock LY6 valve springs, OEM cam and more in my cabinets) is beginning to looks like a pile of money... to buy the new 4L85e I want....:banghead: .........and I said I'd never pay for forum use anymore. Exactly what I just did. This forum and eBay are funding my swap :chevy:

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Lots of progress. Fuel system is done...but I need to secure a few things a little better. I spent extra coin and time trying to incorporate some of the 1/2" fuel hard lines and -8 AN s.s. hoses. After getting it all done with various adapters, and finding 3 leaks (at low pressure)... I decided to pull it all, and run a new -6 AN s.s. flex hose to replace it.
Harness got rearranged. I decided to run all the fuses, relays, ecm/tcm to the passenger fender. Have all sensors hooked up except O2 and MAF...should complete that tomorrow. Bought an inexpensive (well, compared to the others) cold air intake kit for the '99-'07 trucks, plus a 22* 4" tube and extra coupler to work up something to fit... now I'm running that to the drivers side! Got some rewiring to do, a couple of terminations.....then I can't think of one good reason not to hit the key! Since I have a GoPro now...I suppose I'll set it up to record the event. I'm actually kind of anxious to hear it now...vs w/carb and MSD timing it. get rid of or exaggerate the lope? I know...............pics. |
Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
I would be interested to see the cold air intake. I will need something for mine. I was thinking a 90* silicone elbow and some 4" (exhaust) pipe to one corner or the other.

Re: Project Underfunded / next phase - LSx carb'd to LSx efi
Very nice work on the EFI install Kurt. You always do first rate work on your truck. I like the intake painted too. You'll be back on the road in no time. Good luck finding that tranny.
