My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "

I have been on this site a while just looking around thought it was time to start a build thread

This is my 1962 C10, long bed , small back window, my grandfather bought it new in 1962 custom ordered with a Corvette 283 and 4.11 posi, I have owned this truck since he passed away in May of 89

Truck is not undergoing a major rust repair/restoration but has the following, I did all these upgrades in the late 90s

1994 TPI Roller, 1995 700R4 w V6 torque converter(higher stall), power steering and front crossmember from a 72 with disks, power booster, 12 bolt rear end with 3.08 gears, front and rear sway bars, full Auto Meter gauge set up on a custom dash insert, 2001 Dodge Ram seats

I just finished the major rust repairs including roof, rockers inner and outer, floors, fender lowers, cab corner, door jamb and front door post lowers, still have a few spots to fix but almost there

Goal is to make this a nice driver, not a show truck but a truck that will run and last another 30 years

You are a lucky man to have a vintage truck that also has family ties.

Grandpa would no doubt be proud of ya!

Thanks for posting.

You've got a cool truck and the family ties are awsome. My gmc has been in the family since it was a couple of years old so I know how that feels
looks like some quality repair too:metal:

These Grandfather truck builds are the coolest.......My Grandfather bought mine new in 65, and passed it on to my Dad......Then after my Dad passed away, he left it to me.......Guess I'll leave mine to my son.

Anyway good luck with your build !!!!!!!!!!!!

looks really good, did you spray any kind of primer in that roof?

I treated the inside of the roof with metal etch, rinsed off and then used por 15 on everywhere I could reach, I even extended paint brushes with wood, I did not apply anything to the weld areas, por 15 really screws up the welds !! I was going to use the wax oil stuff after the truck was together from the visor holes and the dome light hole to make sure that it was all protected, the outside was treated with metal etch and then the drip rail was coated with 3 layers of Por 15 and then dusted with epoxy , I then coated the roof a few coats of high build epoxy, I am working outside so the rust will have its way if I don't do anything

Thanks for all the kind words about my old junker, I hope to have it together in a few months and ready to drive again, been sitting more or less for 8 years, always running but almost never driiven, I have done several projects before this one, its too bad I waited so long for this one, it had no rust in the floors back in High School, oh well I paid the price for that one...and then some

Here is another project in my garage

1960 Bugeye Sprite

Twin Cam Totota 4AGE 20 Valve 170hp

Megasquirt EFI managment
Mazda Rx7 LSD disk brake
custom front suspension/Toyota disk brakes/Datsun calipers
Custom rear panhard, competition shocks and springs
All metal rear fender flares

there are alot of hours in this car repairing rust and body work, it was hit in the rear and shoved in about 6 inches, what you see now is repaired and just a skim coat of bondo....I hate final bodywork !!

Here is what I started with, looks ok unless you know what you are looking at, been hit and bondo applied over 1 inch thick on the rh side still wet and I have known this car and owners for the last 17 years and they never did any body work !!, take a look at the tail lights ann turn lenses, they are all pointing different directions, I hope the truck will be in the part complete state like this one soon

This car had a 280hp 12A bridgeported rotary in it at this time,Dellorto 48mm

would run 0-60 in 3.4 secs

way too loud and hott !! at Hot August nights no one wanted to drive it !!

Did you find new patch panels for the roof/windshield header repairs? Or did you fabricated all of that?

Re: My 1962 C10 Build Thread "Grandpa's Truck "

I purchased a "rust free" roof from a 64 and used what I could of it, I used parts from 3 trucks to repair the rest of the rot , as far as I know no one makes any repair panels for the roof, I did see the visor panel above the window availible but that was all

Where'd you see the visor panel? I could use that.

You could also likely get it from MBGmike or Tri Pro Automotive. Both are vendors here on the forum.

Got my 98-01 Dodge Ram seats installed, wanted to get all the fab work done before I paint the inside of the cab, these seats were a huge pain in the ass to get to fit right, I cut down the seat risers, took 2 1/4 from the front and 1 1/4 from the rear to bring the seats down to the stock 62 chevy seat height, had to modify all 4 seat risers and shorten one by 2 1/2 inches and fab a new bracket for the center pull out cupholder, I made adaptor brackets for the 4 outer attachmets that use the stock seat holes and drilled 4 new ones for the center attachments, welded plates to the floor underside with studs ....alot of work to get to look right but hell...I got a good deal on the seat so it was worth the work I guess

its very comfortable and planty of room with the stock fuel tank installed still, I set it up at the same height and posotion as the stock seat, the lower seat is a bit longer but gives added support

Got the front suspension cleaned and made a power steering adaptor plate, I set the power steering up over 20 years ago when I was a young hs kid, it was never right...this time I made adaptor plates for inside and outside the frame and installed spacer sleeves between the box frame, will add pics when I get them, I was dark tonight, got the RH bed side swapped out front bed panel swapped and the 15$ junkyard wood installed...its just cheapo pine but hey for 15$ it will work for a while, got the rear brakes and axle c clips replaced as well as axle seals

Got the Jeep door check installed too, test fitted to my crappy old doors but...they work great !! I filed the check strap down a bit at the end so it would fit betwen the factory bracket, others have said to bend it but...when you do that the mounting screws will not go in the jamb

Trying to get this old truck back on the road to be my DD again
