Fixed my strange temp gauge readings. I had replaced the gauge sender unit and had all sorts of strange things going on. It would peg the gauge on warmup until the thermostat opened then read mid scale which was higher then before. Driving it the readings would vary all over the place. Engine was running normal as I was checking it with a thermo gun. Ended up taking the thermostat out, drilled 2 1/8" holes in it and then filling the engine with coolant at the manifold prior to reinstalling the thermostat. Works great now. Only thing I can figure is that I had some sort of air pocket that refused to work itself out.

I finally sat down and starting cleaning some of the LS parts. The intake, front and rear covers were disgusting. The inside of the valve covers as well as valley covers where pretty bad too. I gave the trans the ole wire brush treatment and consolidated all of the parts in the bed.

Very nice Colt, :metal:
If I may ask, what product/vendor are the fillers and particularly the filler cap over the top of the radiator?
Thanks,
Sam

Last week I moved it from beside the shop to the front of the houses driveway and cleaned all the leaves of of it. Then I cleaned out my shop enough to get it inside. Then we had a bit of a freeze so last night I put my daily in the shop and tonight I put the GMC back beside the shop to get covered with leaves and gunk again. Poor thing .

I "winterized" Old Red today. Replaced the "mags" with the ralleys and while I had the rear wheels off I replaced the brake shoes and painted the new drums I bought at Auto Zone. I've never liked the drums I got at NAPA, they were not concentric, and causing a pesky vibration. I'll finish buttoning her up tomorrow after the paint on the drums is dry and take her for a test drive.

I traded some old 4 lug pony car wheels and tires for these to go on the front of my ramp truck. The guy said he bought them in 1970 and has had them on several trucks.
They aren't perfect but they are perfect for the ramp truck! :metal:

Took my 17yr old out for a cruise around town. JJDa Boss and his his gang are here and all the po-po are there. I think i surprised the boy by laying rubber and making a lil too much noise...in the middle of town, sounded great.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Put the new Cold Case radiator in. I've had heating problems with the 4-row brass radiator, even after flushing the snot out of it. I put the thing in and couldn't get the lower trans cooler line fitting installed to save my life. Took it back out and realized that the threads on those internal fittings were scrofulous. Brushed all the crud out, put the thing back in and the fittings threaded right in. Finished up, and went to buy a new burp bottle. Once I get it all sealed up, I'll drive it and make sure there are no leaks. Then...put in new coolant. Replaced the old heater control valve while I was at it. My FiL had installed shutoff valves like you see under the sink in one of the lines. I removed it for the flushing process, and was happy to see that the heater core didn't leak. I don't think that it is original. At least I hope not.

Next, I'll be rebuilding the alternator. The front bearing is chuckling, and I don't know if it has ever been rebuilt.

ETA- Took the truck to a steep hill and ran it up to 75 MPH. It's only 78º out, but the gauge stayed right at 190º, which is what the thermostat is rated at. Shut it off, let the temp climb while I was in buying Lottery tickets. Fired it up and it dropped right back down to 190º within a block. Problem fixed. Of course, this doesn't prove it will run cooler when towing the trailer in 100º weather. This truck always ran hot even with a new 4-row brass radiator. Anyone want to buy a used 4-row brass radiator cheap? :D

I replaced the drivers side valve cover gasket. It was leaking at the bottom rear and the oil tracked down to the flex plate cover and dripped on the floor. I used Fel Pro gasket and Permatex Ultra Gray sealer. Hope this did the trick, I'll know tomorrow when I test drive her.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I planned to put the tail lights & reverse light in my donor bed, but I realized that I didn't have the screws needed to hold them to the bed. Does anyone know the thread pitch of screws that I'll need? :D

With the first item on hold, I moved back to the last unfinished step. I got the bed lined up & bolted down, followed by the bed side to floor bolts that I could get in. Surprisingly, only 1 had to be left out. So, at least the bed won't rattle or fly off. But there won't be enough speed to make that happen if I don't have brake lights, turn signals, etc. Today was still progress, so it's all good.
