SLIME Tire Sealant
 

I’ve been putting Slime in my lawn mower tire every summer for about the last 4+ years. Well the tire finally had it. So since I had to change it, I thought some might want to see what it looks like inside the tire. Its pretty thick and not really that sticky. It has small hairs in it. Kinda reminds me of a dog poop after the dogs been chewing on carpet. :lol: Well anyway here’s some pics.

man i hate that stuff with a passion in car tires it ruins the sensors for the tire pressure if it has them plus you can never balance a tire with it inside what i normally do with small lawn mower tires is install tubes if they leak down all the time

I wish I could have put a tube in it. This mower sat on flats for 5+ yrs. Then I just put some slime in it and aired it up. Tire went down every winter for another few years. Come summer, another bottle of slime. The side walls have dry cracks and are splitting all around. I figured a tube wont last long mowing 5 acres with mesquites growing up. What really kills me is the new tire cost $70 bucks then i had to mount it and a new one with a rim is only $5 dollars more. No one in town had one with a rim that would fit my mower. I had to change tires the old school way. Screwdrivers, pry bar, bumper jack, crow bar, soapy water. NOT fun.

wow i paid 65 dollars a piece here for the same times installed on my boss mower with tube installed and that was mounted!!

X2 Whoever invented that crap should be drug out in the street, beaten, and then shot. Not to mention the fact that some brands are actually explosive and flamable.

yea some are flammable we found that out when i worked in the tire shop and a tire caught fire wile we where dismounting it scare the crap out of us

Does the stuff ruin the wheel as well?
I had planned on using it on my stored trucks/cars but not now!

I can’t really say. This tire was trash years ago. The mower was “stored“ outside, uncovered, and water stands when it rains so I’m sure water and condensation was already inside it. The rim did have some rust and pitting on it but not as bad as I was expecting. …… On that note, I would not use it on any thing I cared about unless it was a absolute emergency. If someone uses it and wants to clean it off, lacquer thinner wipes it off like warm butter. I don’t know about cleaning a wheel sensor though. Here’s a pic of the rim.

I think it may depend on the brand but yes they can corrode the heck out of the rims. And no you don't want to put it in a stored vehicle.

There is no cleaning of a tire sensor. If that stuff is put into into a tire with a sensor, you just killed it. Actually the tire sensors don't like really any type of moisture at all.

fix a flat will ruin a regualr tire too it leaves a chemical residue in teh tire so a pacth and glue wont stick

The Slime leaves that same residue. It's like a real light weight oil residue.

Wow, that is hard core nasty. I'll try tubes in my mower tires. I have the same bleed down problem.

I put a can of Slime in a trailer tire one time. Long story short, the tire blew out on me later on and I had to actually cut the tire off the rim! The tire store could not get it off.

I use Slime on all my bicycle inner tubes, and use their liners between the tire and inner tube. I love it. No more flats.

I have never used it on a car tire.

It does work well, my mountain bike hasn't had a flat in well over 10 years.

have sealed up tires with constant slow leaks with it well.


but yes it some nasty stuff when you take a tire off.

only 1 tire it could never seal a slow mystery leak, popped the tire off the bead and ran some clear silicone around both sides. no more slow leak.

As long as you use it for its intended purpose (middle of nowhere, already used your spare tire, and have to get back to civilization) you'll be fine.

You CAN"T blame slime for the way that wheel looks. That tire needed to be replaced probably 7 years ago. There was obviously grass caked inside the wheel from the tire being flat. Most of your mess is old grass. If the slime got you out of buying a tire for 4 years whats the issue?

I'm not blaming slime for anything. I changed the tire and posted pics of what it looked like inside after using slime so people could see...... Nope no grass. Thats all slime. I have tons more pics if u need them.......Only issue i have was the price of a new tire, and like stated above, u might have some problems if using in a automobile tire.

It's good of Mike to review his findings...I'd rather read it than experience it.

I just finished reviewing Slime's MSDS and it appears this stuff is fairly safe
considering some of the compounds we use around our garages.

Considered non-toxic, non-flammable, (flash point > 93.3°C / 200°F.
It is fairly alkaline (8.8 pH, not unlike the hard tap water some folks have).
It does say that it can react violently if in contact with acids and oxidizing
agents (much the same can be said about the baking soda we store in the
fridge). Use caution when choosing a cleanup product on this stuff.

One thing Mike did mention was the oily residue it left. The MSDS touches
on this feature in the spill response section as it's being quite slick on hard
surfaces. I would think you would want to avoid getting it on any pavement
where you would want to walk or drive.

Non-toxic but don't eat it.
Wash your hands after use.
Don't get it in your eyes.
If wearing gloves, they
recommend nitrile or neoprene.
DO NOT use latex gloves.
Don't inhale it just because.

Don't throw the empty can in the bonfire. :dohh:

I bought a new riding mower this spring for my 3 acres and I've put 8 plugs in one of the front tires so far. I was wondering if there's anything that I could spray inside the tire to just make it solid..? Like spray foam or something..:confused:

Mr. Pops, they make foam for tires. It gets rock hard. I havent used it yet but i've been trying to find it local, with no luck. I have seen it online but im not big on ordering online. Might end up having to tho. Ill see if i can find the link to it for you
