"Daisy" My 1950 3100
I'd like you guys to see my project girl. I bought her 3 years ago as a complete truck. It had a 235 and 4 speed behind it. With a last known registration of 94' I brought her home changed the points poured gas in the carb and bam! She was running. Once I knew it was safe after doing all the brakes, and a few other engine issues sorted I drove her locally for 2 years.
About a year ago my father in law and I pulled the factory drive train and I slowly started my build. Here is the parts list and the photos. Some are before it was torn down and it will look similar only lowered more. 327 V8 S-10 T5 Speedway Drop Axle Dana 44 rear 3" lowering leafs C-10 Power steering Disc brake conversion up front Factory Location 7" Brake booster 15x8 Steelies Coker Classic white walls http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps07c87158.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psc3437809.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psm8t5isi2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pspqyjn4t8.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psblaudiax.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psxjornod3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps0wdqbyb6.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psxt3rctrx.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps6kdmnefr.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psodfv9aih.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pss2kude7w.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psf3igzpdx.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psn0o8yxgy.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psyyinjmes.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps9ovbmgdv.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psjzoduzla.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psak97jazi.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pswfcejzbw.jpg And that's where it sits now. We should be running brake lines the week. I'll be painting under the cab this week as well and hopefully setting in on the frame by Friday. I still need to source my bed wood and then it will be final assembly. Once it's assembled I'll be doing the interior. Rust prevention, paint, and sound deadening. Carpet and seat covering after that. Hopefully it will be on the round next month sometime. Thanks for looking! |
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
that setup looks so familiar. my 49 has a 327, m21 & 12 bolt with 3:73's. also has a sid's drop axle & power brake conversion - drums in front for now. kind ov wish I had a 5 spd & that may change. runs great & scares the hell out if the ricer's !!

Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
Sweet! I'm curious how quick it will be. It's a factory rebuild.
|
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
never ran it against a clock, but - my son has a 79 mustang fox body coupe - 351 / 5 spd /9" really quick car. he borrowed the truck one after noon & after 2 hrs I was beginning to worry. he finally came back. his comment was "dad, the mustang is quick, but the truck is scarry fast !"" maybe one day i'll take it to Pacific Raceways foer some fun.

Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
Hey, you guys are doing a real nice job. Those old 327's will really perform.
I had one in my 64 impala that looked just like what you started with. I also went with the finned valve covers. I'm curious why you went with the straight axle. My 51 GMC always steered and rode perty good. I've considered keeping the straight axle type front end. Anyway, Look forward to your future progress. Jeff |

Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
I buffed the firewall and planed on painting it the factory green. But decided to just satin clear it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pszvyqjfhv.jpg I wire wheeled the bottom of the cab and used Rust Shield paint and will spray underbody coating once dry. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pssyvpgxyu.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psnxaalajd.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psag2tstqt.jpg |
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
Nice I'm running nearly the same set up - C10 power steering drop axle with disc brakes. I too hope it rides decent  we're almost at the same spot on the build, finishing up exhaust tomorrow then setting the cab for last time. Keep it up dude looks good!
|
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
Thanks! I'm hopeful. If it doesn't ride well I'll have a different pitman arm made. Something lower to make the drag link level.
|
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
We finished the brake lines and then mounted the cab. I'm getting excited!

Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
I'll follow along on this one.
I'm really interested in hearing how your drop axel setup performs. I'm considering one for my 53 3100. |
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
Well after gettin everything installed I jumped up and down on the front and it will likely have bump steer. How bad I don't know.

Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
One idea is redoing the bracket that it came with by making your own that sits higher on the frame.
I ground one of the tabs off the bottom of the steering box and was able to flip the link to the top side. This got it really close to level so we'll see how it goes http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...y/IMG_4314.jpg |
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
Mine assembled on top without modification. Unless I put it together wrong.

Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
hey Lo1 - from your pictures it looks like you're using the stock rear trans mount, just hung under the frame rails. how did you mount it ? how about a picture? thanks

Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
looks better than mine. mine's a tube bolted to the bottom of the trans mount with 2" spacers under the frame. the problem is that now the exhaust is too low. I will play with this idea before I have the new exhaust built. thanks
|
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
No problem.
|
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
good morning. after looking over your photos, I have a few questions. what disc brake kit did you use, and what booster / master cylinder ? who made the exhaust & why is it over the cross member ? looks too close to the brake booster. just curious. thanks
|
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
It's a CPP disk brake conversion. It's a factory mount booster from flat out engineering. The exhaust was custom bent at a local shop. It is close to the booster but I'm going to wrap that section of pipe with header wrap. He ran the exhaust there to keep it up high since the truck is pretty low.

Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
Just read your thread.
Nice built so far!! I really like the look of your engine :metal: Do I see a GTO in one of the first pictures? |
Re: "Daisy" My 1950 3100
Thanks!
Yes that's my father in laws 72 GTO. Frame off 3 years ago. Then a couple valve guides went bad so he decided to just rebuild the whole motor. Welllllllll that went south quick after we got it back from the machinist. He indexed the cam wrong, the cam bolt only had 2 threads holding it on, and the Pistons were .020 out of the hole. So the motor is currently getting fixed at another shop. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps2b5kgxv2.jpg |
