2000 S10 Xtreme Drag Truck

Just thought I would start a thread on my 2000 S10 Xtreme race truck. I will try to update this thread as I make changes to truck or get pictures when I am at various race tracks. I hope you enjoy viewing this thread as much as I enjoy running this truck down the track.

I started to do that for you. I'm glad you beat me to it. Those pics you sent me the other day looked good. Sorry I forgot to respond.

This will be something new to me. I will have to remember to keep this thread updated as I do things to the S10. It's like trying to remember to take pictures. I do, but it's after the fact. |

Here is a couple of pics from the past. These were taken on October 17, 2014, at North Star Drag Strip in Denton, Texas. The little S10 had a 383 SBC, T350 trans with a 4600-rpm stall converter. I would shift it at 6200-rpm. Before this night the truck was running 6.90's in the 1/8th mile. I replaced the stock (heavy) front suspension with TRZ upper and lower tubular control arms, QA1 Pro Coil springs, QA1 single adjustable shocks and Aerospace Aluminum Drag brakes. The total weight savings was exactly 100 lbs. It was a Friday night and I rushed to TNT to see what it would run. Not surprised that it ran 6.80's.

Did anyone notice the guy by the truck in pic one of post 4. He is the starter but he looked like he was ready to run, duck or hide. Maybe the little S10 growled at him or something.
A few pics of the S10 back on April 12, 2015. It's all clean and ready to go racing. Attachment 2250268 Attachment 2250269 Attachment 2250270 Attachment 2250271 |

The 2023 TMCCC race season will be starting on March 12th and it looks like the schedule is full. We have 12 races booked and there will be a few non-scheduled Saturday night races planned. No telling how many I will get to run this year but I am looking forward to as many as I can.
I had to do a few things to the S10 for this year. These were great suggestions from a very experienced NHRA racer. He suggested that I replace the rear window and add a rearview mirror. So I did and I had to install updated 5 point harness. And since I will be running in the electronics class I had to install a delay box. It looks like I30 Dragway will be open at 12 noon Sunday and I need to work on using the delay box. So I guess I will be at the track figuring out how this thing works.
I also was looking through some photos and found back in 2017 I made and added some bump stops. The little S10 was pulling the wheels high enough so when it came down these was nothing stopping it but the headers. So, these homemade bump stops were installed. And I bought new headers and had them coated. No more header damage from pulling the wheels up.

Well Sunday was a very frustrating time. I could not hit the light right. It's hard to re-train yourself to re-act on the first bulb when you have re-acted on bottom bulb for years. The bump stops were put to good use, three out of the eight passes pulled the wheels and turned me towards the tree. Scary but I drove through it. The little S10 ran in the 6.30's, so that was good. We found that my eight-year-old slicks have finally run their course. Pics below are of my new Good Year 32.0x14.0-15. They are D5 compound and are matched 101-3/4" rollout each. Let's hope this will keep me going straight the next time I am at the track.

Have you done anymore testing?

About the only testing I can do is my practice tree and when I am driving around town. I can tell you this, people look at you a little differently when you practice at a stop light. |

I went out to Xtreme Raceway today and the new slicks made the truck handle excellent. Truck usually has a low 1.40 60 ft and runs 6.45 this time of year. Three passes- Pass 1: truck ran will, did not shift into high, ran 6.54 with a .23 light. Pass 2: great run, ran 6.47 with a .01 light and Pass 3: truck was Dead-On Dial 6.45 with a .32 light.

Awesome. Once you get a handle on the top bulb racing you should be very competitive.

TMCCC Bracket Race #2 was at the Texas Motorplex. Weather was great and there was a big turnout. My first test run I was in the right lane and got to see the car in the left lane do a wheelie. If you see that then you are late on the tree. Second test run I actually thought I cut a decent light until I seen the video. The other car was halfway down the track before I let go of the button. First elimination round, now this one counts and I thought for sure I did ok. For me I actually did but the other guy did better. Ran a 6.42 on a 6.40 dial-in and a 0.04 light. The winner ran a 6.11 on a 6.07 dial-in with a 0.006 light. Margin was 0.028 of a second.

Ok, It looks like my electric shifter (B&M with Shiftnoid) will be soon replaced by an air shifter (M&M and CO2). The electric shifter has been acting up and now it has me thinking each time I make a pass is it going to shift or not. So to keep from having to think about that I bought a new shifter. Now I will need to weld up a floor mount and a bottle mount.

I was back at Texas Motorplex on April 16th. Lost first round and again it's me and not the truck. The truck ran a Dead-On 6.42 but I cut a .07 light. You can say that is as slow as maple syrup on a cold winter day.

Since we had a rain out for XRP on April 23rd, I decided it was a good time to install my new air shifter.

Sunday April 30th meet was at Redline Raceway in Caddo Mills, Texas. Turned out a very nice day weather wise. My two test hits were very bad and I could not get my head in the game. I thought for sure I would be trailered after the first round of eliminations.
But that was not the case. first round I hit a .03 light, ran a 6.52 on a 6.48 dial-in and took the win. Round two got better with a .008 light and a 6.50 on a 6.48 dial-in for the win. Then I found out I was in the finals. I felt good, I felt I had a chance to take it. But I flinched at the light and lost. Got Runner-Up. Oh well there is always the next meet which will be Sunday May 7th at Redline again. Attachment 2269010 Attachment 2269011 Attachment 2269012 |
